When you are playing the E shape without the barre, are you just being careful not to hit the unfretted strings, or are you muting those strings?

I’m just being careful not to touch the other strings. But it works the same if you do mute them because you’re playing a chord with just those three fingers

I subbed! Also a question, is the Fender Squier Stratocaster an okay starter guitar? I only have an acoustic right now but I'd like to get back into electric.

Thanks for subscribing! Glad to have you on board! The Squier strats are just fine for starting out, but honestly I've been having students buy this Eart guitar off of Amazon because for the money it's lightyears ahead of Squier guitars & it's only $220, so pretty comparable. This is an affiliate link, but I don't care if you use it or not. If you do, I get a very small kick back from Amazon. Straight up, though, I have in person students who've been getting this guitar & it's probably the best starter electric I've seen: amzn.to/3jA2VPX

@@SimpleGuitarDotCom thank you for the suggestion, that blue looks amazing! I'll probably go with that. What kind of amp would you recommend to go with it?

@@John-- I have two students that have the blue one, it's nice. The sunburst looks great in person, too. What style of music are you playing primarily? That'll affect what kind of amp I recommend :)

@@SimpleGuitarDotCom Thanks for the response. I'll be playing primarily alternative and punk, like Weezer and Green Day lol

@@John-- You and I are birds of a feather, friend! I'd recommend this Marshall DSL. It's small enough for practice at home, and can be mic'd for performances if needed. But if you want a bigger one, there are options for that, too :) www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DSL5CR--marshall-dsl5cr-5-watt-1x10-inch-tube-combo

That was the best explanation of changing up the E shape barre chord I’ve heard. Didn’t realize so many different chords could be made. Great lesson!

Thanks, Ryan! I'm so glad it was clear for you! The major, minor, 7, and m7 shapes are definitely the best first ones to know. Then there's all kinds of fun stuff to build on after that, which we'll do in other lessons :)
