She had so much time to live and see what she never saw i cried with my mom and dad one night....but i cried for 2 hours i couldn't hold back from crying true human drama... i still cry for the lovely filly i loved and still do. I still cry for her to this day

Anesthetizing horses is very dangerous, especially for lengthy procedures like a fracture reduction. They're prey animals who will often try to get up before having full coordination in their legs. It would've safer to hold her in a harness slung from the ceiling. She could've then been put in warm recovery pool,this allows the horse to regain it's bearings without hurting itself or anyone else.
Frances Sweeney they didnt have that technology and didn't have the knowledge about horses and recovery pools in 1975. Something like that would have been impossible. Its also because of Ruffian and her death that this technology and research became possible.

Surgery was attempted to save her but the waking up from the anaesthesia was terrible back then so she started galloping when waking up, ruining her newly repaired leg. She was later put down and buried under the flagpole on the Belmont race track, with her nose pointed to the finish line.
