100% agree with your decision! It is not a fail to admit that she is unique and has different needs. Just means she is on a different path than all the rest. I applaud your morals in this situation!

I don’t think there’s a soul on this earth with a genuine love of animals who would think any less of you for putting Kiwi and her health first. If any trainer does, well… in my mind that says a lot more about them than it does you. 💛

All of this is why you are such a great trainer. You have a true heart for the horse. If anyone would think differently, they aren't worth worrying about. One of my favorite quotes: "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."-Eleanor Roosevelt. I have loved this mare since you picked her up. All things happen for a reason, and this mare needed a person like you. Many Mustangs aren't this lucky. Always stay true to your heart, and you will be considered one of the truly great trainers out there. SO excited for Kiwi's new journey.😊

Massive amount of respect for you Sam. This is true horsemanship--not proving you can train in x days (we all know you can), but listening to your horse's needs even if its potentially at your expense. You should be SO proud of yourself.

Becoming a professional horse trainer is a challenge! By learning from the different horses you grow....and grow and will never quit learning. The cataract issue is a tough one and could happen to any horse. Kiwi is very special and you have made ALL the right decisions! She has taught us ALL so much about "reading" body language and how important it is!

I prefer using a chiro that is also a vet, same with equine dentists. I think pulling out if the competition shows more strength and is a sign of being a better trainer listening to your horse.

No one is going to think less of you for your decision. You set aside your own goals in the best interest of the horse and that's really what it is supposed to be about, finding good homes for these beautiful wild American horses. You made the best decision possible. It really is a win / win for all involved.

This was more than a story about a trainer and a rescued horse. This was how you were both educated, how you learned to talk & listen to one another, & how you did accomplish the makeover. Because you are 2 very different beings than when you began. You learned that the finish was not as important as the journey. Each was a student, each a teacher. It seems that you 2 were brought together to really see each other & become interdependent. And what a gift that Kiwi now lives with a woman who will continue the work and relationship.

You have put the horse first and I respect your decision to think of the safety of the person buying from the auction. If someone was to get a horse and had a terrible experience that could jeopardize all the mustang's going through EMM. A positive reputation is essential for people to trust this process. A real trainer keeps the horses welfare the main concern. That is what you did, anyone can force an animal into a situation it either isnt ready for or able to do, you listened to her body language and her limitations. You saved this horse from possible physical damage, or abandonment when she couldn't perform. To many horses end up in the auction loop where they end up sold for meat. Instead shes got a good home and a bright future. Thank you for doing what's right..

Aww I'm sorry you had to drop out. But it's incredible that you can put the compition (that I'm sure you've paid for somehow) aside and think about the horse and the potential owners that might get her in the auction. I've definitely learned alot from you about really paying attention to the horse and not just being like "oh well she had a set back ill work her some more" my horse has set backs alot, you've taught me to slow down and pay attention! Thanks and keep up your amazing work!

    Hi Sam,
Let me first say that you are one of the best horse trainers out there, you don't have to doubt that.
You are very young, and you are already so amazing, I know your goal was to join the challenge, that's why I would like to give every wild mustang a place with you, you always make a beautiful well trained horse out of them.
Why would it be any different this time, you have already made a beautiful horse out of Kiwi, and he has a handicap, you can't help it, you can see in this that you are the best, because this was the only decision that was the best for her, so I'm going to say it, I'm very proud of you, the best decision ever and that asked a lot of an experienced expert as you.
I'd say Emma, go save the next beautiful mustang from destruction, if it's anyone who can do it, it's you, go girl for thé next one. 🙋🏻‍♀️🌹👍🏻🥰😘👊🏻 youre girlpower love Roos🙋🏻‍♀️🌹👍🏻

10th Competition! The universe decided to give you a bitter tasting lesson. It's not about the competition, it's about the horse. My impression is that you began working with mustangs to give a better life to those that you could and remind people that they are worth saving. I applaud you for keeping the best interest of the horse as the priority. A tough pill to swallow for your ego and sense of worth, but it added to your character. You are an incredible young woman!
If you are headed south after NC, you are more than welcome to take a stop/rest at my farm in SC. Sometimes a stranger that will listen, but leave you alone to heal is the best remedy.

I totally agree with your decision. So I have a mustang who I've now had a year and many people tell me that I should already be riding him and probably already have a 100 rides. But the thing is that year of groundwork and learning to trust and bond one another that starting undersaddle has been so easy and he takes everything with stride. He's amazing and he trusts me. Even my trainer has said that his groundwork is way better than broke horses she gets. I just think that not rushing things and just going with the horses pace is way more beneficial in the long run. I've also read many people send horses back because they have something wrong with them and a lot of people just want to ride and don't understand that you can do a lot more with a horse than just ride. Liberty and walking in the desert and so many other th I ngs you can do and a lot of people are just stuck with the fact if a horse can't be ridden I have to get one that can. If my horse went lame I would still keep my mustang and find another way to do things with him. So I defenetly like that you made this decision.

It would have been terrible to auction her off to someone who wouldn't have the patience and knowledge to get her to the place where she could do what they wanted. You are an excellent trainer - the horse comes first and you found her a perfect new owner. Nobody could have done better.

Absolutely the correct choice, anyone who thinks less of u for putting your horse first needs to check themselves.
It's worth watching your videos back if u have the time alot of eye issues flare on film when they aren't obvious face to face. I have caught a few undiagnosed eye issues at sales this way. Just a quick tip.

I think that Extreme Mustang MAkover purpose is to make life better for the horse. Even if you drop out from competition, you still won, because you made her life better :)

G'day Sam.! don't ever beat yourself up over what you perceive others might think about decisions you make throughout your life. There will alway's be some individuals in your life who want to try and bring you down. to hell with them, they don't pay your rent..!! You are a very smart, beautiful young lady with a big heart, and a very intuitive brain. Alway's follow your gut instinct, just like you did in this instance. It's easy to see Kiwi has a lot of trust & love for you. I'm sure it will be a teary sad day when you get to your destination with her. Mixed emotions, happy for Kiwi to be going to a kind loving home, but at the same time sad to say goodbye to her. I'm sure down the track the new owner will shoot you some footage of her in her new surroundings looking healthy and happy. Best wishes from Downunder Australia. John, Perth. Western Australia

Lucky horse to have you. I would keep up with the meds though. Since it is for muscle spasms and pain; the muscle spasms can keep irritating and inflaming what ever it is that is sore which will prevent any healing. I don't speak from an experience with a horse of mine but rather my own issue where the initial injury caused inflammation that then kept my injury from healing and therefore becoming more inflamed. ... if that makes sense. Good luck with her.

Wondering where ya'll disappeared to. Who cares what anyone would say about pulling out of the emm. You recognized the issue and you pulled for the benefit of Kiwi. It's all worked out and the both of you are better for it. Also did you say she is your 10th mustang? 9 out of 10 isn't bad. Keep on posting, love the content!
