Palm Springs sets heat record amid scorching Southern California weekend

- Sizzling heat has pulsed throughout Southern California, especially in one desert city. KTLA's Kacey Montoya reports on Saturday, July 6, 2024.
KTLA 5 News - Keeping Southern Californians informed since 1947.
Has it been considered that the +1° record might be attributed to more homes, more parking lots, and more cement?
And a lot of sand
That's known as the heat island effect. Cairo used to be the largest heat island on the planet, but has recently been overtaken by Phoenix.
Phoenix is one big block of cement, absorbing heat all day long and radiating it back into the atmosphere all night long. Back in the day the overnight temperature was thirteen degrees lower than it is now.
I think it's drying out the air to the point clouds are not forming, killing the monsoon rains.
There are a number of requirements to standardize "official" temperature measurement equipment and locations to allow accurate comparison between historical and future temperatures. Unofficially, hundreds of locations within the local heat island went way over 124F, but those are due to local heat island effects. What most people don't realize is that "official" temperature records deliberately remove the effects of local heat islands, which means the temperature we feel is actually far higher than "official" records.
It has not been mentioned. But it seems plausible.
@@jasminelindros8923 What YOU don't realize is that this is how the books are literally cooked. There is a saying: "don't trust any statistics that you have not fudged".
Weird when you pave a desert with roads and don’t maintain trees you get record highs
Trees? Do you know what "total lack of rainfall" means? Trees die here.
@@Tessmage_Tessera Umm, why is it called Palm Springs then?
I thought there were Palms and Springs involved.

I just read the book "Lights Out" by Ted Koppel (Nightline) and it goes over many scenarios as to what WILL happen either through a Solar Storm, EMP, or Terrorist Attack. And with all the unvetted men sneaking in here from all over the world now, I'm guessing a terrorist attack will be the one. *Remember this last scenario when you vote in November, folks!!
Well that's what they want in order to save the planet. Go back to the stone age.

The desert gets hot.
Who knew? 🤷♂️
In other news... water is wet.
The desert is too hot in the summer = GW. The desert is too cold in the winder = GW. There is a drought in the desert = GW. It has just rained in the desert = GW. It has rained again in the desert = GW. My cat no longer poops outside = GW. My car got stolen = GW. ... ... ... Why did the chicken cross the road = GW.
Sheeet that’s hotter than it was in Phoenix!!
Life in the desert.
Without electricity and air conditioning it is uninhabitable and dangerous to live there.

@@rjohnson9543 Not the entire state, no. Northern regions are just fine. But the desert southwest is an inferno right now. I live here, in the Mojave. 110 degrees at present and still rising, as of 1 pm. Death Valley must be absolutely beastly right now.
When you pave a desert with roads and then get surprised it's hot
Holy crap. I was there when it hit 123°F, and it was murder. 124° is insane.
Woodland Hills, in the San Fernando Valley, hit 121 degrees in 2019.
Once it's over 110, it may as well be 150.
😂😂
Death Valley record still stands at 134, early 20th century, when CO2 was lower. Palm Springs maybe, but nothing to do with CO2.
@@glendurrant6023though his comment doesn’t have much to do with the video, what he said technically isn’t wrong. So it isn’t really an opinion.
@@glendurrant6023 Getting paid to print nonsense or modify historic temperature records is not proof. US had high temperatures in the 30's and lower temperatures in the 70's opposite of CO2 concentration, facts not opinion.

And yet actual scientists disagree with your claim. Yeah, I've got too many brain cells still living to agree with you.
It is always hot in Palm Springs. This is a normal thing.
Fr, I was there a last year it was easily 118 or so.
I have been there several times where it was even hotter than this. I felt like I was on Mars needing a space suit. 😂
To break consistently tie or break an all time record high is not a normal thing
Yeah, don't worry, nothing has changed, everything is the same and the climate is not warming one bit. Thanks for listening, Fox News Incorporated.

Yes. People don't understand.

Hard to believe anyone would want live in Palm Springs.
People have second homes there when they live in Michigan. They cover the chairs and escape the winters. By now they're back in Michigan.
Bob Hope and Celebrities had some great homes out there.
This is now extreme. All time record heat in early July. I to the east in Vegas and we are around 115 for the next 4 days and then 120-122. Nasty and dangeroous!
It’s a desert? Of course it gets hot. It’s located near Desert hot springs and desert center.
When temperature records keep being broken every single year, for more than a decade, it's no longer dismissed as "it just gets hot there."

“Extremely WARM” ??? 116° is more than warm, honey. 🤯🥵
Who ever heard of such a thing getting hot during the summer?
I earned a trip to Palm Springs in 1976 as one of the top 10% Marketing Reps for the former CG/aetna Insurnace Company. If it had been 121* then, I would have hopped on the next plane back to Florida!
Isn’t Palm Springs just rent a house, AC all day and pool, then AC all night and pool . Or the Aerial Tramway for cooler temperatures. 🥵
When the weather lady said:
“If you want to get technical, and i do…..AND I DO!” 🤣🤣🤣
Can you say Melanoma? Lol, can't imagine how many necks turned blood red in Palm Springs
All time? How far back is that?
Why don't record LOW summer temps ever make the news?
Brad, good question. Per a NOAA report I looked at, the data they are collecting shows that there are two high temperature records set right now for every one low temperature record. I don’t know if you are into statistics at all, but another strong indicator that the Earth’s surface is heating up is that the last month that the Earth’s temperature was lower than the long term average was in 1985. Flip a coin and the odds for both heads and tails is 50/50. The odds of hitting heads for 39*12 flips are astronomically against. .
Local extremes are often due to local effects which do not necessarily reflect the global problem. Globally, since 1850, when was the last time we set a high temperature record? Last year. What's the second-hottest year? 2016. Third-hottest? 2020. Fourth-hottest? 2019. Fifth-hottest? 2017. Sixth-hottest? 2015. Seventh-hottest? 2022. When was the last time we set a global record for the LOWEST temperature? 1909. Only the mentally deficient will fail to see a pattern here.
