I do miss my old gold e38 740iL. Full Bilstein suspension, H&R springs, limited slip diff out of an e39, M parallel wheels, continental DW tires, and brake upgrades with stainless lines. Was a highway mile eating monster. You could really feel the weight if you pushed in hard in a corner, but she would do it if requested.
Had basically the same car, black with BBS wheels e32 740il full bilstein and H&R springs with limited slip diff from 750il. It drove fantastic the car felt much smaller and nimbler like a 3 series rather than a huge limo. Great sound and power from 4.0 V8 too. Honestly the best car I've ever owned received much praise from fellow motorheads still regret selling it to this very day.
Yooo I've been hoping for an E38! Would've liked to see the V12 rather, but awesome car regardless. Also Misha your point about judging the car for its intended usage is refreshing to hear. Performance is obviously fun, but not everything needs to be a track machine.
I dm'd misha in the spring about doing a lap in my 750i. Then I got my cats stolen, the rear diff exploded, the right front shock spat its guts out, the self levelling system was broken by the yearly inspection guy....so a trip to Germany didn't happen. Maybe next year :D
Of course. Not everything is about performance. Diff purposes for diff reasons. Would love to drive that e38 for a little bit of ice cream in the sun, with my favorite music.. enjoying the atmosphere.
@@mgcharoudin will try for sure! The bimmer is going to eat around 5k€ during the winter just to make it roadworthy so I hope for a good long roadtrip in central europe. :)
In reality, the 750i is barely faster than the 740i though. A 735i manual would be entertaining though for sure! Was lucky enough to talk my dad into a 2001 740iL sport [pack] in 2009 to replace his outgoing e90 330i. It was such a nice car, perfect blend of sporty, powerful, and very comfortable. But yeah, despite it being a low-mileage example (I think it had only 60 or 70k miles on it), the repair bills were sadly in-line with its $100k+ price tag. Still, if I had a huge amount of money lying around, I'd be happy to get another one and get it fully rebuilt mechanically and aesthetically, it's such a refined and good-looking car...
I saw the end of it in the corner of my eye and had to go back to see what happened, instantly jumped into the comments to see if anyone else noticed lol
I test drove a E38 728i many years ago and fell in love with the way it drove and handled. It was lovely, made an offer but it fell through. Ended up buying a 750 L7 years later but that wasn't as fun to drive as the 728i i tested (Because its a stretch limo). I also own a E46 M3 and I think this era of Bmw is peak (including the E39s). In terms of comfort, steering and handling, they were really great fun. I wasn't expecting to see a E38 on this channel tbh. But I appreciate this video alot! Now I hope someone brings a W140 S class to you to try. 🤣
Nice car ❣️ Maybe as 735, or 740... but E38 is one of the best 7 series in my opinion 👌🏼 And green metallic with cream leather, always looking beautiful 😅 And you have so much time to talk during the lap...no stress 😜
Enjoyed that, thanks guys👍 My first lap there was on a damp track in my old E32 735i and that was an eye opener to what the place is about. Was totally out of my depth😂 The car did well though
I also drive a 728i. Visited the Nürburgring once with it but just as a spectator. Great to see a video of a similar car driven on the nordschleife😍 But it's not the same engine as in the E36, Facelifts and some the last months of the prefacelift got the M52B28TU which was introduced in the E46 3 Series and never available in an E36. It was improved with the in terms of low end torque with the double Vanos, but it's is the worse engine than the Pre-TU M52, because the seals are quite bad, which is why their idle is quite unstable after a cold start in the winter. I rebuilt my Vanos after my first winter, since I had that Problem.
The BMW 740i M sport, specifically the short wheelbase 740i M sport was pretty much a M7 n the only M7 ever, it had alot M5 suspensions parts. Alot of work actually went into it to make it sporty, from sway bars, coilovers, diff, shorter gearing, quicker steering, similar engine to M5. Still the best looking 7 series ever, n still one of the best looking 4 doors of all time.
I knew the sporty shorty is a special car, but I didn't realize how much went into it. I thought it was just the community that made a big deal about it.
I LOVE IT!!! The original Transporter! The best looking 7er of all time!!! Some day when I buy one, I hope that Misha is still around The Ring to send the mighty V8 ;] I don't know if I heard the owner right, but there are no M52B28TUs in E36.
Another great review and lap you were just relaxed and in zone with that car I’ve never seen you take that much kerb before. I’m surprised how well it went too.
One of the most comfortable laps i've seen you do in a while. I'm sure theres quite a bit of body-roll but God damn is it comfortable in straight lines.
I owned few E38 - 735i and 740i and I must say - if they made touring version I would never chose different car! They are beatiful, perfect inside, super comfy and with contour seats they are lovely to drive. I actually used them to haul trail with cars - really good cars. Shame they have some steel parts that make them unecessary heavy (subframe, arms or even leaking with age fuel tank) but other than that those cars are absolute marvel of engineering. 728i is not enough to pull this chassis though.. Definitely best looking 7 series - period!
Had a 728i and I think it would be actually enough for the car with the manual box or modern AT. But not with the 5speed slushbox with looong gearing. It only really locked the converter at highway speeds which funnily enough resulted in sudden drop of fuel consumption. I loved that car anyway. Not sporty but still capable in the corners due to perfect weight distributrion. But honestly I don't think that the engine of this particular car is in 100% shape. It seems to drive like mine did before I sorted the VANOS seals and gave it new spark plugs.
E38 is my favourite 7 and I think this colour combination is the most beautiful. It's still a great car for long journeys, a relaxing and peaceful experience.
Definitely the most handsome car on the track that day! I drove one of these for a day many years back, it was slower than my Cavalier V6 and the fuel mileage was terrible!!!!!!!! But it just looks soooo good!
As an owner of a 728I I can confirm.. these cars are fantastic to daily (I am doing this currently). I have been fortunate to have picked up a non abused one and she is perfect. Yes lacks power but I have other toys for playing. I have absolutely no doubt that my car would do a 1000+ mile journey doing silly speed without skipping a beat, all whilst doing it in total comfort.
I think Misha also missed the fact that the car cost £4500. It is super comfy. Super Spacious. Really Good Looking. Really reliable. Cheap to run and insure. Really luxurious. Find me a modern car with all those attributes for £4500. You cant. As far as I am concerned I love cars like these because I look at all these people going out and spending 40-50-60k on a BMW 3 Series and I am like BUT WHY? It may be faster and a little more "modern" but it doesn't have the charm and will be ruinously expensive to run. Use your money more wisely than spending £20,30,40K+ on a new car. Although on the flip side i suppose those are the people that make it possible to buy these sort of cars. I had a 728i. Paid £500. Was in fantastic condition. Self serviced it. Only "modern" thing these sort of cars are missing is the infotainment and... for £300-£500 you can buy an aftermarket head unit that looks like it comes from factory but is full touchscreen with bluetooth, carplay etc.
This E38 has just the perfect setup, except from the steering wheel on the wrong side. 🤭 I would not recommend Jay to get a 740i even tough i love the 4,0l V8, you will pay so much more and in the end the fun and power might just not be that much of an upgrade.
Had a 728i exactly like that in Oxford Grün Metallic and tan interior. Despite what you might think, it was a great car. Would do 7L/100km if driven like an undertaker, but also 240+ kph.
