  • Sam Shankland scored an extremely important win in the eighth round when he managed to beat Rauf Mamedov on board four. This helped team USA score a 2.5-1.5 victory of the Azeri team. After the match we caught up with Sam and asked him about the game. We also asked him about how he managed to keep his cool in such a stressful situation. Finally, we tell him about Anish Giri calling him a weak link in team USA and what does he think about the same. Check Sam's reply in the interview.

It's surprising to read all these negative comments. Of course as a chess player and journalist I have great respect for both Anish and Shankland. Anish was asked a question about who he thinks are the favourites for the event. It was in that interview that he mentioned about Sam as a weaklink. It's a public video not a private conversation. Thousands of people watched that video.
I have asked so many players about something positive said by someone else. So how is it different when something negative is shared. In fact you get to know how a top 25 player in the world responds to a question like that. It was not unethical or gossip journalism. It was a normal question asked based on a public statement made.
And public figures like Anish Giri and Shankland understand this and Anish's interview can be found on 3rd of October on the ChessBase India channel. He talks about Sam's response as well.
In any case I am grateful that everyone watches the videos of ChessBase India and enjoys them. We need not have the same opinion on all of the content that is created. This comment was written to just let you guys know my point of view because I feel it is my duty to respond to the people who spend their precious time watching ChessBase India videos. My team and I are committed to creating high quality chess content.

..and that's the only reason why there were a lot of negative comments.. Your reports and short interviews and game snippets were top top class that it pains a little even when there's this slight digging business.. Thing is sagar, your interview and you asking him and his reply and everything can be justified in a politically correct pov, but there was this certain amount of cringe we felt when this question was asked, the cut to anish's interview and then Sam replying.. The cringe we feel uncringy, watching Bollywood interviews Because we never expect much from it anyway, will hit the viewers a lot hard when it comes from you guys.. That's all.. Keep moving forward guys.. Full support.. (y)

sir please dont use the work weak link. he too has his own pride and dignity as a chess player. even if it is a public video by anish giri. still sam might have not seen it. considering usa team as a chain, anish told sam might be the vulnerable and weak link. If sam doesnt know about the content on which anish said that, he might get offended. And this might hurt him as well. just sharing my view here. incase if sam is aware of the content on which weak link is spoken. then it is fine

Honestly, I think representing "ChessBase India" it would be far better if you could have avoided the temptation of asking typical mainstream journalist question like this. What Anish said , was his opinion and it's good for him for not being politically correct. Shankland is a rising star of USA. Telling him that in order to get some response was a little below the belt in the context. Of course you are well within your rights to ask such question but are you willing to? That too when representing ChessBase India? Very sad.

    3. What are your thoughts for the next round?

Anish Giri sits on top of the world and likes to draw so much they call him Picasso. Which is the more interesting player to watch? Shankland is a class act all the way and Giri is boorish by contrast. Can you imagine Sam calling Anish 'Picasso' in public?

Regarding Anish Giri, you have to understand his background. Anish is Dutch. Dutch people are very bad at giving compliments and extremely well at criticizing others and putting others down as bad, or weak link etc. In the Dutch society, they justify this as "being straightforward" (recht door zee). But it is just being a jerk in disguise. Either way, in Holland it is normal and accepted to be like that. And mind you! Anish is a good guy! Imagine the a-holes!

I think that it was very legitimate to ask Shankland if he had a comment to make, and in fact it is only fair to give Shankland an opportunity to respond--he is not forced to do so. The channel even posted the clip of Giri's interview to establish that the interviewer was accurate in presenting what Giri said! That is very responsible and professional journalism, and Shankland, who obviously chose to rise above what could be an inflammatory comment by his teammate, gave an excellent response. Well done all around.
