you "accidentally" murder your entire party, what do you do:
-make their character deaths useful in the end
-narrate how their deaths caused the setting to be doomed, creating a post bbeg gets what he wants scenario for the next player characters
-make fun of them by putting on mr crabs with his tiny violin.
I would definitely go with the last one.

I’d use their deaths and move the whole party to the afterlife or another realm, or have the Harold of a god speak to them and give them a mission that fits with the story. What I did in my previous game was once they were all dead, I had someone arrive and magically restore their lives. They didn’t know this but that person was someone they thought was an enemy for the entire game. In various spots after that, the group encountered a cat which helped them in their tasks. The cat was actually this person using a polymorph spell on himself.
When that was revealed in the penultimate session as they watched that character dying at the hands of the BBEG, the look on their faces….I won’t forget it. They were SUPER motivated to take out the BBEG now

I’ve been coming up with ways to keep my group alive incase I accidentally kill them when I didn’t mean or try to.
I’ve just replaced death saving rolls with 'you get 3 chances', and that they refuse to die, which gives them a rush of energy to defeat the current opponent. It does make them more dazed and weaker the more this happens, and is good for the campaign I’m trying to do. (Strixhaven based)

Oh crap I didn't scroll down far enough I do a similar idea but with a minor consequence, no matter how long they spend in the warriors afterlife, when they come back if they choose to do so, it sends them to a month after their death, or in the case of one player who was just so badass he cleaned straight through, 1 week prior to death. But I only do it early campaign. Especially if the tpk was a flaw on my part. But if it's a late campaign tpk either they ignored warning signs or got really confident they could do something I knew they probably couldn't.

Make them keep their characters and create a "escape from hell" one shot, you could theme it as a heist where a bunch of souls before hand have been planning to steal back their life force from the devil lord in charge and making a run for it
If they fail and they can try again, if they succeed they come back to life and can continue the main quest, however if they die a second time they'll realize the devil lord got in trouble for letting souls escape and has reinforced the place making the heist harder

I’m generally against killing my player’s characters without cause, so if I feel like the encounter is going wrong, I try to compensate *before* things go wrong, and keep sneaky healers close by. If this *were* to happen, I’d have them all wake up in a cell after being revivified and captured by some villain, and they’d have to escape, make it seem planned and part of the plot.
That is because my games are about having fun with friends, not actions and consequences. I know my play style isn’t for everyone, but giving my players some reassurance that they’re in control of if their character lives or dies gives them a lot of creative freedom, and leads to them making fun choices they may not have if the fear of death lingered over them.

I like the idea of a ruling faction that was aligned with the players sending out a rescue party of high level adventurers to potentially rescue them, or retrieve proof of death. That way there is a canonical reason for this new group to be interested in the old group, they get another chance at the dungeon, and it opens storytelling stuff like post-partem possession.

For the Tomb of Anihalation, the plan is that if the current party dies, their previous characters are showing up at the entrance via Dragon. Said previous characters are lv. 20

One of my fav ways i recovered from a TPK was I had the players fight their way out of the afterlife (Doom style) and they had to find their bodies to be revived. We did this since the party was really invested in their characters and they didn't want to make new characters just yet

One UA-camr had a very creative quest for this, where they all wake up and to get their full gear back and memories and stuff you go through and fight everyone you've ever killed to help them move on. Nice change of pace tbh

A nice way is, when they come to the enemy that killed them tell them of a weak point that was created in the end of the last battle. just like in the hobbit nobody knew one scale was lose, but in the second battle they see it and now see a new important reason for the first battle and their old charakters have an impact in the new story.

Nope my dm just forgot to give us 4 levels. We were level 8 fighting encounters that were meant for level 12s.

Had this happen to me in the first game I ever DM'd, half planned but more like a possible outcome of their interactions. When the ranger interrupted the first main BBEG's monologue with an arrow to the chest knowing full well that he had supiorer numbers and skilled archers of his own trained on the party he got turned into a pin cushion of arrows. The rest of the party went from being confident and a bit cocky to panicked and desperate. They tried to run, bargin and even hide but they were shot down one after another. And then I quickly narrated them finding themselves awakening in a glade of the forest they were in, having been resurrected by the spirit of the forest, a high level Druid turned budding archfey who tasked them with clearing out a blight infestation and then returning to get rid of the bandits lead by the BBEG and get their revenge on them. The party seemed to love this, having the tables turned on them from what had seemed like a very normal introductory dnd session one taking a twist and gave them incentive to go after the BBEG beyond just clear out these bandits that are harnessing the nearby town.

I would create a new side campaign where they have to fight through the afterlife until they can get back to there body's, returning to life

I have an idea for a campaign that is based on airships and the players are the crew. They make their characters and that is the original crew and all members equally own the salvage operation. If there is a TPK… we’ll one of the other crews the players made comes to investigate their bosses disappearance and continue the story

You can also have the characters end up being injured and captured by the badguys then you can make a prison break arc.

i had a party in a campaign i run not die, but drift away from the game and it stopped being played. however, i later started the same plot/story with a different group (some overlap), and found it interesting to pick up where they left. instead of restarting the story, they each got a call from someone in the faction they chose who wouldve had contact with the old party, who told them to go investigate the old party’s disappearance. then, when they got to where they wouldve been, they werent there. first adventure: what happened to the old party. eventually, they tracked down all the clues. they were selectively assassinated by a very mysterious ancient god’s followers. second adventure: dealing with the followers. picking up where you left off, especially integrating the death into the story and showing its impacts works great for adding more lore and fun to campaigns!

    "How do you fix that"
On their way to the afterlife, Have them meet a powerful entity who will offer them their lives back if they can kill 100 of a predetermined monster. They will basically be warlocks until they kill the monsters, and when that happens, turn them back into their normal classes.
