  • I think the first thing that striking about the KG curriculum in the Waldorf philosophy is the absence of any 'academic' work. There are no workbooks, textbooks or even read aloud books. Instead the curriculum is filled with stories to tell, songs to sing, music to listen to, crafts to do, and toys to play with. The natural rhythm of the day is enhanced with imaginative stories and pretend play with child-sized brooms, ironing boards, wooden trucks and simple dolls. Meals are events celebrated with an opening verse. They are varied with flavored, wholesome and thoroughly enjoyed. The toys are simple and all natural.

    I love the idea of lighting candles in the morning.

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  8 років тому

      I love the idea in theory, too! But this is how it goes down in my house: The candle isn't perfectly centered between my two boys (9 and 14), so one pulls it closer, then the other pull it closer and before you know it there's wax on the table, the candle is out and they are arguing about who gets to light it again! lol! I still try...sigh.

    Your videos are wonderful! What a beautiful haul, thank you for sharing it with us! I love the little peg dolls with the holes for the pipe cleaner arms...adorable! I just knitted a bunch of little hats for our gnomes so maybe I'll add some of those peg dolls to our collection. Homeschooling is so much fun, I'm loving it!

      Oh please share how you knit little hats! I've been wanting to do that, but I don't know how. Maybe we can do a swap ;) yes, those dolls with the pipe cleaner are just the cutest thing! Even without paint or felt they are cute.

    Thank you for sharing! Your videos continue to challenge my view on traditional education. I'm adding more art and play into our homeschool this year. I'm excited to see the change in our day. I would love to see a vlog of our homeschool day!

      Hello Sarah! I'm so glad you are adding more play and art into your homeschool; that's great! I feel there is a time and place for play and work, and by the time the kids grow to teens, they'll be doing so much work, it will have been a good thing they got to play when they were kids :) It's the one thing my 18 year old comments on regarding his homeschool experience. The fact there was little pressure and not too much 'work' (I'll have to explain that later) in his younger years, resulted in my son embracing the work load of college. Who knew!

    Hana, Thank you so much for taking the time to put these videos together. I know it takes a lot of effort and time to share this information with us. I just want to let you know that they are extremely helpful and informative. We covered the general concept of the natural materials in our education classes when I went to a local college, but the way you explain the Waldorf theory, and how you showcase the materials really helps us, the viewers, to get a better sense of the Waldorf philosophy. I can't tell you how incredibly helpful this information is. Thank you, again.

      You're welcome. I know what you mean about getting that encouragement and feedback. I feel the same way. p.s. I've been daydreaming of these Waldorf Kindergarten materials for my grandson, ever since I saw this video the other day. So "thanks" Hana, now I get to daydream about your room AND these materials! LOL I think you just may have to adopt me and let me move in with you. I think that would be easiest. hahahaha...just kidding and poking some fun. I do look forward to trying to purchase some of the natural materials for my grandson to start his homeschooling experience. He'll be two in February.

      We would be lucky to have you :) What a great time for you to have grandchildren you can pass your wisdom and experience. And at the same time still continue to raise your own. Your grown children are lucky to have you! I wish more states would consider the charter school model. It's a great way for families to get the supplies they want and need for school. Not that any research shows that children come out ahead the more money you spend, in fact the differences are marginal. But Waldorf and Montessori supplies rank high on the pricey list (at least from what I've seen). And it's nice to get a little help to have those supplies :)

      I have Kindergarten, 1st grade & 3rd grade. I am doing it through a charter school thanks to your video! Otherwise I would have not known I even had the option! Big thank you for sharing the info! Do we have to provide samples for EVERYTHING we do through the charter? I did not want to bog down my kids with worksheets and book reports for everything they do. I feel like that would kill their interest in learning. Kinda turns it into a chore.

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  7 років тому +1

      Oh I'm so glad you are going through a charter; I hope the experience is a good one :) Yes, too many worksheets when the kids are young can kill the spirit. I know that for us, there isn't a lot to show for 'learning' in the younger years. For that reason this year I opened a private Instagram account I plan to share with our teacher so she can see what the kids are doing everyday. I can print one off with a description of that project, and it can be a sample for my kindergartner. I aim to have one sample in each subject area for each kid. Some schools/teachers differ in what they require, but I'm sure a good balance can be achieved. Do let me know how your year progresses!

    Wow. Amazing. I've debated on doing the puppets with our history because my kids are older but I'm convinced. The items are amazing.

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  8 років тому +1

      I think as long as the kids haven't reached puberty, they will still enjoy playing with the 'younger' toys. I think the problem comes in when their peers make fun of them for playing with 'kiddie' toys, but I think naturally, kids like to play with simply wholesome toys. Once they hit puberty, they completely dispense with most childhood toys and delights, and transition to more mature activities. So, yes! Do try out the puppets or anything else with any subject. As long as you don't think it's silly, your kids won't :)

    Can u also share more about LMNOP. I've been eyeing it now and trying to determine which one to get LMNOP vs Living Alphabet book

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  8 років тому +2

      Salam Aisha! I had to be mindful not to show too much of the curriculum for copyright reasons, but the majority of the books for KG are more like reference materials for the parent/teacher than actual work the student would be doing. What I love about the curriculum is all the wonderful materials you can add to it from Waldorf vendors.
      Okay, you ask a great question regarding the books. If you purchase the Live-Education curriculum for FIRST grade, the illustrations and the poems are the same as the book LMNOP.(The first grade overview and materials will be coming out next week, IA). I like LMNOP slightly better than the Living Alphabet because of the poems and because if you chose not to buy the Waldorf first grade curriculum, the book LMNOP would be a good substitute for that part of the curriculum.

      I'm so glad you're happy with your supplies! I like those CDs, too. They come with the lyrics and if you aren't familiar with the songs it's easy to learn and then you can sing them to your children and they'll learn!
      Sarah's Silks' play house kit is an exciting addition to our store, perfect for creative play as it still leaves so much up to the imagination. It just came out this year and has been quite popular. Kudos to our friends at SS for coming up with the idea!
      As far as suggestions? I think you've done an excellent job covering kindergarten needs but here are a few items worth a mention.
      Organic Fairy Wool for wool crafting and magic wool pictures. I recommend two books as well to go along with wool crafts - Magic Wool and More Magic Wool. The first one instructs how to make the pictures to go along with fairy tales, using wool in the kindergarten and making simple figures. The other, More Magic Wool, teaches basic natural dyeing and making seasonal dolls for the nature table.

      www.achildsdream.com/more-magic-wool-by-angelika-wolk-gerche/
      A nice wide paintbrush is all that's needed at that age, one for the child and one for you:
      www.achildsdream.com/white-paint-brush/
      The new book The Pumpkin Painter is a sweet story book for that age with beautiful pictures, songs and a muffin recipe to bake with young ones:
      www.achildsdream.com/the-pumpkin-painter/
      If introducing letters then the set of individual LMNOP Wall Cards with verses from the book on the back are a useful addition or alternative to the book LMNOP:
      www.achildsdream.com/lmnop-alphabet-wall-cards/
      Lastly, finger knitting yarn! Kindergarten is the perfect time to introduce this handwork technique and begin laying the foundation for academic learning by building neural pathways in the brain through the use of one's hands.

    Is there anything you suggest for someone who has done a more traditional method of schooling to switch to this style of learning. I am going to look up books.
    We made a finger puppet using your video instruction and it went better then I expected. :). We will make couple more this week and share on IG. Thanks for the peg doll book suggestion, I will look it up on amazon.
    Thanks again for sharing this.

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  8 років тому

      I'm so glad you made a finger puppet! Yes, do share on IG, I'd love to see it. I bet your girls loved it. I find my kids love anything I make for them. They aren't critical at all...well, except my youngest! Where did that come from?! Kids will cherish the things you make for them and the things they make for themselves. While preparing the school room for this year, the kids looked fondly on the projects they'd done. Even my 14 year old son looked fondly on the astronomy/Galileo book we did last year and browsed through the pages before I put it away. One Waldorf principle that persists through the grades is doing any activity with care, purpose and honor. It seems lofty, but it can be achieved in how you store or use your color pencils to how you complete an assignment. Another principle for the elementary years is 'head, heart and hands'. Lessons meets the child on three levels: intellectually, emotionally and physically. I think a video response might make this more clear actually, so I'll add it to the list :)

    I'm writing an article for a blog I write for about Waldorf education in early years. I'm finding a hard time finding much info for preschool, K or 1st grade - do you have any great resources you could recommend? The blog series is about various homeschool methods/styles for the early years.

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  8 років тому

      You ask a good question, and I can't think of any specifically Waldorf books on early education. Most of the ones I have or have read begin around age seven, though there is a lot mentioned about the early years in regards to development but not education. The only book that comes to mind is You Are Your Child's First Teacher by Rahima Baldwin. As education starts in grade 1, there isn't any academics before then, and therefore little about early education is my guess. The only thing I can think of as far as early education is that kids are imitators and learn thought imitations so provide a worthy example of imitation. And, provide the wholesome materials for them to use. Please link your article when it's posted!

    Can you tell me if there is a difference in flexibility between the modeling wax and the decorating wax (let say if you make a ball out of each) ? I have the decorating wax at home thinking we could model with it but it is extremely hard to model 3d things (hard material)

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  7 років тому

      I think they are the same material or the decorating wax is thinner and you can use tools to get cutouts to decorate items. I think it's easiest to use it in the warmer months.

    I wish we lived closer to each other. You seem so relaxed in your homeschool journey. I could used some more of that perspective. Four years and I still haven't learned to relax. :-) Speaking of candles, could you do a video talking about how you start your homeschool day? That seems to be a weak point for us. I build a "morning meeting" and it either seems to engage one age or the other. I have between 6th grade and kindergarten. Ideas?

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  8 років тому +1

      Next time I'm in northern California we should meet up! I'm super chill about play time, I admit, but other things stress me out like having to finish school by a certain time because of an out-of-the home class or obligation. I found that even weekly park days that were too early in the day caused stress for me and took the spirit out of our homeschool day. So, I stripped my schedule of all classes and obligations except one four-week class in the spring, and brought the rest home. So, this long comment is to say that we can honor the stress by changing the environment that causes the stress in the first place, since I don't believe we can truly eliminate stress. Gosh, it's like every comment is a blog post! lol! Yes, I'll add a video about our daily routine, but honestly we don't have a consistent one except these days we do start at 8am and we start off with something the kids can do independently. When working with mixed ages, I feel I teach to the oldest, but anything I do with the youngest, the older kids listen in and feel nostalgic about so they stop what they are doing to listen to the story, or play. So morning activities I would center around KG, while lessons I would center around the oldest, but youngsters naturally listen in.

      You know that might happen with the non-professional paint brushes. We bought a super nice set from Waldorf Supplies, but funny enough, my favorite are a super inexpensive set from Michaels. I actually bought it for the paint brush holder that the paint brushes came in, and ended up loving the paint brushes! So now we have both sets (nice/expensive and cheaper version) in the same paint brush holder and I find myself going for the cheaper set. The exception is when we are doing a Waldorf-type painting, wet on wet painting or working on a large sheet of watercolor paper.

    This is my first year homeschooling. We are going to be unschooling or deschooling this year. Next year we are going to be focusing on moving forward. I am interested in using the Waldorf curriculum to coincide with Gather Round, The Good and The Beautiful, Sonlight, and Masterbooks. I know I won't use everything however I need some advice. My son is 11, has autism and dyslexia, and is behind in regular school. He is currently scheduled to be in 4th grade in regular school. He can barely add and subtract. He also has never had a social studies, science, art, or music class at all. Should I go out on a limb and just start over?

    You really got me excited about Waldorf, thank you. As Muslims, we don't do fairy tales, music nor draw humans and animals, but I do appreciate the other aspects of the curriculum. So, do you know if I could just get the parts that I like and exclude the others? How can I work my way around that? Is there a by subject curriculum that you recommend?

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  6 років тому +2

      Asalamu Alaykum Dina, there's a lot you can modify with the curriculum, but I would recommend skipping the KG curriculum all together. Most of it is focused on celebrations and festivals. However, if you are not naturally crafty, artsy or into cooking, then the curriculum may be helpful as a guide. I've done the Fairy Tales, but you could easily source other stories with the same archetypal storylines and characters. The stories of the previous prophets work well at this age as well as a substitute for the Hebrew stories and Saints in grade 3. Musa's story works in conjunction with the unit of ancient Egypt and most previous prophet's stories work well in conjunction with ancient civilizations. I tend to do those first before ancient civilizations, but it doesn't always work out with the age groups. The seerah works well with 4-5th grade and reverence to the creator and His creations can be a part of every lesson. You can uses verses in the Qur'an where necessary. We used a number of them in our geology/mineralogy unit and during our ocean unit. Unfortunately, you can't buy individual books as the curriculum is sold all together. As for the drawings, that's a challenge. The botany unit will be easy enough, but most other units have people in them. I've drawn for educational purposes, but not for leisure or art, etc. If you prefer not to, (and I understand because it weighed heavy on me when I decided to do so for homeschool), you can either draw stick figures, skip it entirely, or get creative and draw everything but the person. With the music, I'd focus on the percussion instruments like the drum or xylophone.

      wa alikum alsalam Hana, thank you for your detailed reply. Yes, I am not naturally crafty or arty, so would need guides :). The whole curriculum is also a lot over our budget as we also use other curriculum. Could I use the resources at 'achild'sdream' as a guide?

    HI there! I've been watching your videos recently and have fallen in love with Waldorf education! I noticed your children are a bit older. Would you happen to know of any resources for Pre-kindergarten children? I know Waldorf encourages delayed academics but I'm hoping there is something appropriate for a 2-3 year old. Thank you for making such quality content!

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  6 років тому +3

      Hi Daniela! Thank you :) True, I don't have a lot of content for young children. In Waldorf education, there isn't a focus on traditional academics so the activities of 2-3 year olds is both practical, fun and considered 'work' to little children. There's a lot of play which doesn't look like much, but when the proper tool (toys) are provided, their work is providing the perfect education for the littles. The types of toys I would recommend are the ones that mimic the ones you use. Broom, washing rack, baby dolls, trucks, blocks, fabric and other open-ended materials. Invite your children to help you with your chores: cooking, cleaning, errands, gardening, etc. If you don't want to or aren't into having washing take 4 times longer because the littles are joining you, then consider having them bake with you. Play dough used a substitute for real dough! Baking bread (or just playing with the real dough) is such a pleasure to little children. If you are more social or desire that more, invite a friend or two over and do the same thing with other children. If the big mess is a turn off, spend more time in nature. Take hikes or set up playdates at the park. At this age imitation is huge for children. Be mindful because you are being watched by your children! Tell them stories! Language development is big at this age. Skip the twaddle (useless basic language/story books) and instead seek out quality stories. They are best told by you, but you can always use picture books to help. Fairy tales are a winner at this age, but you may choose to pre-read those stories. Singing is great. Singing is a wonderful way to transition from one activity to the next. Now is a good time to get your routines down. Tune into your natural rhythm. Be aware of activities that require concentration and sandwich those between activities that are 'releasing' activities. This may be difficult to identify at first, but usually playing outside is a breathing out activity while a directed activity is breathing in (according to my understanding). I think we naturally follow this. We do our work in the morning and our fun in the afternoon. With little kids, their timing for activities is only about 20 minutes or so. Here are two videos that might help

    I'm struck by how different Waldorf is to public school (and honestly most schooling including homeschool) in theory and implementation. Very interesting. Thank you for the video.

      Hello Jamie! Yes, it really is different, not just in what is taught, but how it is taught, when it is taught and with what materials. There are some other educational philosophies that recognize the different developmental stages of childhood and teach accordingly, and in those you'll find some commonality.

      We use anything I find interesting and matches with each child but my main curriculum is "open and go" bc we're blessed with 4 daughters under 6 yo. I really like the looks of those kits though. Thanks for taking the time to review them!

    Would it be conflicting in your opinion to also use Montessori curriculum along side Waldorf?

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  7 років тому

      In the early years, I think the two philosophies don't work well together. Also the teaching method is different. The supplies, however, can work for either in my opinion. Both Waldorf and Montessori supplies are high quality and natural and honor the child.

      I am actually using both with my almost 3 years old ! We are using what makes sense to us but I am not knowledgeable by any mean of the curriculums (in deep I mean). I am currently reading more about Waldorf and in the process of implementing "Rhythm" in our lives. We are already using songs for transitions (Big up to myself lol).
      To write it simply:
      Montessori:
      - independency of the child
      > kitchen tower
      > can put shoes on and off
      > can dress/undress himself
      > accessibility of his toiletry products (comb, hairbrush, toothbrush, etc.) - we have a self-care station
      > child furniture
      > child care for the home too with child size tools
      > kitchen child size tools are used as well
      - Environment
      > low display arts and cards about food, seasons, etc.
      > beauty of the environment + cleanness + order
      > wooden toys
      > fabric toys
      Extra:
      > activities like pouring water, cylinders, etc.
      > sensorial activities like the pink tower (we did not invest in that, but we have some others)
      > we love the geography section, animals recognition, botany study and more
      Waldorf:
      We are very new to this but so far we love:
      > the beauty of the environment (no plastic here too)
      > the play based teaching
      > the arts and handwork
      > rhythm
      > transitions
      > children are keeping a book to copy/imitate
      > imaginative play
      > peg dolls
      > Nature table
      > story telling
      > memorization of poems
      I strongly believe the 2 philosophies can live together and I do see lot of similarities. Again, I only pick and choose what make sense to OUR family. As muslims (Asalamu alaikum wa ramatullahi wa barakatuh Hana), it means for me to take what is connected with my faith.
      > verse of the day = ayah of the day for us
      > sewing = Our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to mend his own clothes (and to wash it as well !! With Montessori, children learn to wash clothes by hands)
      > meaningful speech = again a Sunnah
      > Listen carefully = again a Sunnah
      I would like to write more but my comment is already shamefully long.
      I just wanted to say, I guess, that you are the one who lead the way. If you want to make Montessori and Waldorf coexist .. well, you can ! You do you.
      Again, I am not a specialist but this is my amateur opinion ;)

      Gilden Matos good question. You certainly will know once you receive the curriculum because it outlines some of the materials you'll need. Some basics are main lesson books, block and stick crayons, watercolors and watercolor paper, yarn and knitting needles and a recorder. Optionally you can get beeswax, kite paper and felt.

    May I ask how you pay for all these? ( Waldorf education can be so expensive)

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  6 років тому

      Hi Lillian, Waldorf material is expensive. We used to be very frugal with our supplies and share a lot of them. Now we are with a homeschool charter that provides educational funding for us to buy school materials. These items were purchased using school funding.

  • @lillianstonehocker6818

    I also extremely interested on the outcome of you 18 year old son using homeschool methods. Did you use Waldorf with Him throughout?

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  6 років тому

      Hi Lillian, my now 19-year-old is a senior in university studying computer science. He has his first paid internship this summer, and is scheduled to graduate next year. So academically he's doing great. He entered university two years ahead of his peers and attended community college during his high school years.

    How much did all this cost?

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  7 років тому +2

      Good question. I'm not sure, but definitely several hundred dollars. We use educational funding from our charter school to buy these things. We use them, but they belong to the school. We get to choose what supplies we want. When we leave the school, we return all non-consumable items.
