Repairing a broken barrier at Newhaven Level Crossing

  • This is a video made out of several clips I shot on Sunday October 4th 2015 when I went to film the three Newhaven crossings. The crossing here by Newhaven Town station had a barrier broken by a car and this is the process undergone by Network Rail as seven of the orange army repaired it. The crossing was working fine afterwards and the work took five and a half hours. Luckily the barrier here has only part of a skirt unlike a conventional MCB crossing, so the repair time was not any longer.

That used to be my job as Barrier operator. Both Barriers on the side of facing traffic will always go down first. then the exit side will go down last in case someone is late crossing the line. it allows them to clear before the last barrier is lowered. they shouldn't, in reality, be on the crossing as the lights will have been flashing for some time. But some crossings are in towns where queuing traffic sometimes blocks the crossing as drivers ignore the yellow box junction. we still got idiots who decide the gates are only there for others and the law doesn't apply to them. gates can be manually controlled with a key to unlock and then using the controls in the lineside box if it's a long way from crossing box. once we are informed a train is coming we stop traffic if nec and operate the lights and get the barrier down. but it's a lot more difficult if the power is off and we have to hand pump them up. they will fall quite well with gravity.

They can override the lights if necessary. Just like at traffic lights that are broken, no one has right of way, unless a police officer starts directing traffic. Hence at a broken level crossing like this, the guidance by the workers functions like that.

They could have just deactivated the wigwag lights (those lights you find at level crossings in the UK) to avoid confusion.

That equipment looks both expensive and fiddly to fix/upgrade; moreover so does checking that everything works in the correct sequence such as the yodalarms sounding as soon as the amber light appears until - in the case of the level crossing shown - all the barriers have closed on a full barrier crossing.
Hats off to those workers and people who deliberately misuse level crossings should be ashamed of themselves

It's supposed to be noisy the purpose of an alarm is to get peoples attention after all wouldn't be much use if it was discreet about it.
