Just a note, the last time Rush played this song live was in the Exit Stage Left tour. Now fast forward to the F-40 tour, this was gem for us Rush fans.

A rare treat on their last tour. The whole show was EPIC, and they bowed out with class.

Check out Rush "Best Intro Ever!!!" It is a mashup of many of their earlier songs which will give you a sense of how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Jacob’s Ladder is another way of expressing the idea of sunlight peeking through the clouds, often low in the sky. The scientific term is “crepuscular rays”.

The song is about a thunderstorm and the synth is the Sunlight breaking through the clouds.
The term Jacob's Ladder is taken from the biblical story but intended to describe a very real meteorological event

With this Band being from Toronto, when they started out they would play in the Detroit area small clubs northern Michigan and New York, imagine if you were around back then

To me, natural science, and Jacob’s Ladder have always been almost like partner songs off of permanent waves. Both are fantastic tracks.

Great reaction!! I love to listen to this song when the clouds and lightning are rolling in!! It doesn’t show it good, but Alex is the one actually playing the foot pedals in this song! He does it quite often it’s just hard to see! Be well and God bless… from Texas!! #Trump2024

Dame, it's so cool that you love this song and dug the video from the R40 show in Toronto. However, a BONUS for you is that the version of the song on Rush's 1981 live album, "Exit, Stage Left" (the album/CD, not the video), is one of the band's all-time classic recordings! People complained about the ESL live album being "too perfect", in the sense that the audience noise was pulled-back in the mix and the band was very upfront and huge. Also, it's one of the first albums to be digitally mastered, so it was amazing sounding. But I loved it because it was a total immersion in Rush's sound and they killed it live, back in the day! Also, the song "A Passage to Bangkok" is a great song from that album as well!

Before you watch the video it takes 1 minute to read the lyrics and it makes it easier to comprehend what the song is all about.😮😮😮

This song perfectly describes the storm we had here in Toronto yesterday; it started with the dark clouds gathering, followed by several rumbles of thunder, and then a torrential downpour, and then, as the sun was setting, the clouds briefly parted to reveal those rays of light shining down. Another song you may like that was based on an atmospheric phenomenon is Chain Lightning from Presto, where Neil's lyrics were based on his experience of watching a meteor shower with his daughter. Cheers from Toronto!

The most humble guys who created songs for the people....thier fans, not for the record mogul.
First saw them in 79 during Hemispheres your. Seeing them in that era was such an unusual, inspiring entertainment that one wondered if the band were from another planet.
Have you seen the documentary "Beyond the lighted stage"? It's a must see.🎵🔥👍🤟

Oh! Thanks for reacting to this (I think I was the one who mentioned the 'dark vibe'). :) I never get tired of watching this performance. For something totally different, I suggest checking out Rush acoustic (yes, you read that right.) Specifically, Geddy and Alex, each on an acoustic guitar, performing the song 'Resist', live from the R30 tour. Geddy's vocals are amazing. It's very different than 'Jacob's Ladder', but shows their musicianship stripped down (although Neil took a bit of a break during their performance of 'Resist' and came back on stage afterwards).

On the surface the song is just about light breaking through storm clouds. Metaphorically I think it's about seeking heaven or the great beyond. Cool song with a ton of meter changes (for example the opening is 5 + 6), and they hadn't performed it in decades I believe. It's on their Exit Stage Left live album from 1981, originally on Permanent Waves (1980).

As I said I have the exit stage left live version of this on my iPod, but I swear this live version from R- 40 is on my iPod also and I listen to this version more than the original live version, there music changed just a little bit.

Jacob's Ladder is kind of "dark-into-light", in terms of music and lyrics. It's very cinematic and epic, but it's heavy! Also, if you want "dark" as in scary, check out "Witch Hunt" and "The Weapon". Those two songs are a part of the original "Fear" Trilogy (which became a quad-song concept in 2002), from the 1980's. Another dark/scary song by Rush is "The Necromancer" and "Twilight Zone". That's kind of a cool/creepy song by them. Also, there are parts of "Between the Wheels" which are "scary" sounding.

This song is about the first ray of sunlight that pierces the clouds after a thunderstorm, nothing to do with the biblical reference, just Neil being Neil writing a song about a random meteorological phenomenon he happened to notice.

Jacob's Ladder is not a scary song it's an intense song. I recommend more Rush songs. Between Sun and Moon on Counter Parts album. Chain Lighting on Presto album The Garden on Clockwork Angels.

great reaction strong guitar stands out, they composed this in the seventies. I saw them on the that permanent waves tour. I still remember a young Alex playing those songs and now, and old Alex playing great! like he used to lol. They have a lot of dark wove into their music, depending on the story in the lyrics. some dark rush if you haven't heard, is called spin drift off snakes and arrows lp. glad you like rush

Ah, but would Rush permit the song to be used in the WWF context? Likely not.
Which raises an interesting question: how much do the Blue Jays pay to play chunks of Rush's music during each game? And does the fact that Geddy Lee has had choice seats for decades now impact the price?
