  • Big Ten Coordinator of Football Officials Bill Carollo remembers the hit. Whoever saw that hit will never forget it. The collision that took place between Michigan safety Daydrion Taylor and Penn State's Bob Stephenson back in 1997 resonates today.

    My cousin suffered a similar hit by two rival players in a high school game. Lacerated liver and spleen, had to be airlifted to a hospital in El Paso (he played in Albuquerque), couldn't eat anything for days. He was really lucky he went on to play in college

    Without a doubt the hardest hit you will ever see in football. Its a shame it ended two great football careers. Today the hit would be called targeting and a suspension would follow. I am very glad that both men continue their love for football by coaching.

      I wonder why it would be called targeting.... probably not to try to prevent this type of injury from happening again right?

    3:53, Head down, leading with the crown. Launch from feet to make the hit. Principal point of contact is to the head and or neck area. 4:09 "My lick would be viewed as a clean hit." I realize the interview was 2012, but in 2018 football that would be an ejection.

    I'm glad that both players turned their careers into a positive. I'm glad that both players seem healthy and content. The fans may not like all of the new rules in the NFL regarding hits but I think that they just want to reduce these types of tragedies, especially the rule about hitting with the crown of your helmet.

    I think like any family owned and run nepatistic business of today. Like top gun, any player who gives up there own personal well being for a schools monetary gain, advancement, and reputation. They should either have big time life/health insurance policy's in place paid for by the school. Instead of paying them, And job security in the coaching and sports management careers of there choice if they receive an injury that is so serious they will never lead a normal life, as opposed to just put out on the streets. The mental anguish/health toll is enormous for these young sports athletes, who without a quality support system will fail, and do crime or worse. Some of these coordinators do not have degrees in there million dollar jobs, just a good support system and good ol boy clubs. These warriors and athletes deserve better.

Though it is right to say that the game was much more rough, it doesnt change the fact that the dude's decision was dumb af and could've easily been avoided. As my coach said, " back in the days, the thoughest team is the won who wins it all." Now a day, football is more about thechnic than toughness and for good reasons. This is one fine example if you ask me.

    it was not a "dirty" hit he didn't have the intention of hurting himself or the other player. all this was was him trying to come up and make a good tackle and he just used very poor form while making the tackle. nobody deserves to be injured, and no one in the video said it was a great hit all they said was that it was one of the hardest hits they had ever seen.

Psychopaths, basically (and Taylor has the cold and flat personality you'd expect from a psychopath). • @generalmaximuspatton6909

      Apex Inferior "accidents" don't just happen. They require human decision and action. It would be "no one's fault" if lighting had struck them but that's not the case. Oh, i have little doubt that in the aftermath he can honestly say he didnt intend to end his own career or cripple the other player. However, anyone who knows or watches or plays football on any level, especially in those days, recognizes that guys are coached to make the play and do it in a way that sends a message to the other guy. It's why they waggle their fingers at each other after a play and it's why the Saints coach was suspended a few years ago. So Taylor loaded up along the sideline and the rest is history. Watch the Seahawks play, they're consistently one of the defenses every year and they are coached to make the play in a way that that keeps their head out of the way as much as possible. There are no " accidents" in life. There is always someone that made the decision to do something that had consequences.

      How the fuck can he say it was a clean hit?? He clearly lowered his head and n hit him helmet to helmet as hard as he can running full fucking speed!! that’s what the fuck he gets for trying to kill the man! Just sucks he had to go an ruin both of there careers all cause he’s a lil bitch that uses his helmet to tackle ppl when all he needed to do was give dude a fucking love tap n he was going out of bounds!!! What a POS!!!!

    Nice to know as well as a Michigan fan that Coach Carr honored Taylor by keeping him under scholarship and part of the Team. I remember watching that game and it has to be one of the top 5 hits I have ever witnessed in a football game. So glad that neither was paralyzed. Targeting has been a great addition to the rules.

      +Assy Holey I understand what you mean, I had one sr year football against east St. Louis. I was out cold I snapped out of it, ran back up to the line to spike the ball. I couldn't feel my extremities. I felt like the only thing keeping me going was the adrenaline. After a quick timeout after the spike, I passed out to wake up in the hospital diagnosed with a stage 3 concussion. That was 8 years ago. I still to this don't think I feel the same.

      Oh but yes there is. Each player was young, strong, very athletic, and considering the colleges they were playing for, at the top of the college football food chain; with the possibility of playing in the pros if the right opportunity with the right team came along. The components of youth, strength, intensity and athleticism that gave them the chance to succeed in football before this moment and would seem to be indicators of a good probability of lengthy careers after this moment did just the opposite for both: it ended their playing careers in that moment.

    Whoever says this was an illegal hit is stupid, he didnt lead with his head, helmet contact was never made, the receiver was not defensless, and the tackler made an effort to wrap up the ball carrier or tight end

      It wasnt widely reported. Being the end of the first quarter, we went str8 to commercial, and aided by the fact they both walked off the field, nothing seemed this level of amiss at the time. Michigan didnt give injury updates in-game at the time & Id bet neither did PSU. We wouldnt have known the severity till medical professionals assessed their injuries anyways, and according to Taylor, he didnt know till Monday.

    Yeah idc what anybody says this was the hardest hit in college football history. It was a like a full on heat seeking missile colliding head on with an incoming freight train. The thing about this hit was they were both coming at each other head on. There was no one player that got the lick with the other standing to celebrate like you typically see. This was a full-on collision of two big guys.

    • @jraybay
      @jraybay 9 років тому +4

      +Keith Martin Obviously not but running at a guy full sprint and leading with the crown of your helmet isn't a good idea... don't need hindsight to know this. poor judgment and poor tackling, wasted two players in one play. At least they are still involved with football though

    • @jraybay
      @jraybay 9 років тому +5

      +Keith Martin Theres a way to tackle and then there's just idiotic and reckless hits. Part of the problem is phony tough guys, like you, who get a kick out of recklessness, as you watch safely from a distance ... Getting paralyzed or suffering major concussions isn't part of the game. It happens on some b.s like this. Leading with the crown of the helmet is stupid its not "wussification" to tell guys to keep their head up.
