  • The Multi-center ESG Randomized Interventional Trial (MERIT) is the first randomized, controlled study evaluating the safety and efficacy of the Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) procedure. This 9-center, 208 patient study confirmed that ESG is significantly more effective than diet and exercise, with an average excess weight loss of 49% at 12 months, compared to 4% without the procedure.
In this video, leading ESG expert Dr. Christopher McGowan, MD, MSCR, breaks down the study design and key findings.

I’m in Atlanta but I’m thinking about traveling to you as I watched your videos and you seemed very very realistic and knowledgeable in ESG 👍

Will there be another MERIT trial in the near future?

Will this study help the procedure to be more widely accepted by insurance companies?

It was the first, and arguably most important step. This study ultimately led to FDA authorization, which was the 2nd important step. Next up is a CPT code. That’s still in the works.

Dr. You said out of 11000 you had 3 complications, were those like threatening complications?

Hi Rosie. Our statistic is 3 complications out of 1100 ESG procedures (not 11,000!). I can tell you about them specifically. We had 2 patients experience infections after their procedures in 2018, early in our program (my 20th and 80th ESGs). They recovered fully, and we subsequently adjusted our technique and protocol. My 660th patient experienced post-procedure bleeding, which was managed conservatively. Each of those would be considered "serious adverse events," but thankfully managed and recovered. We fully recognize that complications can occur with any medical procedure, but we are confident that in an experienced ESG center, the risk is very very low. Thanks for the question!
