Very helpful....I noticed your negative post broke off. My positive post broke off (12v Lifeline deep cycle battery) - similar style battery post. Newbie here.... nervous about drilling into the positive post. Any precautions?
Quick fix! Thanks for the video.. I suggest holding the nut ( below the cable) with an open end wrench while tightening the nut on top of cable...That way the stud stays in place..Also, wire brush the cable end on both sides, and apply some grease(Vaseline also works) to avoid future corrosion problems
Any machinist would use oil on the drill bit, on the tap and would use anti-seize on the installation of the replacement stud. Also this repair shown would be a very short term fix due to the corrosion that will soon take place between the regular steel stud and the battery. Stainless steel studs, installed with anti-seize is the only long term solution. Drilling an exact diameter hole is only possible with oil on the drill bit.
I need to do this on my neighbor's RV deep cycle batteries located under the main step on the side door the step bent and caused post to break. Thanks.
Hi, Brian. I have a 150 ah inverter battery; the positive terminal got cut off due to corrosion. Will I still be able to fix it like u say in the video?
Really interesting. Can I use this method for a stripped sidepost? I'm referring to the female part on the battery itself, which I've demolished. I can totally see myself doing this but I'm concerned about how far in I can go. On your application you mentioned 2" but only going in a half inch. Any idea what depth is safe with side post batteries? I'm almost flush with the side of the battery box as it is... but if I could go in a 1/2 inch I would be golden...
I hit my positive batter terminal with hammer like yours, now the battery wont start the car. It shows 12.6 volts but no crank. Probably the terminal got loose from inside. Anyway to fix that?
Typically erosion of the post is caused by a poor connection, leading to excessive heat and melting of the lead battery stud. Most battery specialty stores carry an adapter that allows a stud post battery to be used in an "Automotive post" application (like a car or a truck). Most trucks, golf carts, etc use stud post type batteries.
Stainless steel Helicoil would solve the problem-but many side post batteries already have steel Helicoil type inserts installed in them, making them difficult to repair, but they normally do not strip out. Install the side post bolts with Anti-seize
TONY I was surprised on a Trojan battery how swallow I could drill before break-through. So I did breakthrough and used drill tap for threads. I installed bolt and all fine. However realizing that the bottom of the bolt is exposed to battery acid, will I have a corrosion problem? If so should I do something else?
The battery I have doesn't have lead going down. It appears to be a weird rocky looking composite substance with a copper coating around it. Do you think the same process would work?
@@kellycusce887 His process still worked for me. Mine looked more like metal once I drilled into it. Still not sure what it was though... maybe some kind of copper mixed with other metals/minerals. It was a battery for a solar system btw. I've since gone to a lifep04 battery... MUCH better for my purposes.
@101perspective cool thank you so much for replying. I think we're going to attach a new terminal to the second positive post and try that. If not we'll need to buy all new batteries and we'll look into your suggestion! Thx
@@kellycusce887 If this is for a solar, wind, etc, type setup and you decide to go with lifepo4 then Battleborn is a really good company with great customer support. Expensive though. I only needed one battery so went with them. If you want to save money (usually half the cost of battleborn) then I would recommend watching some current videos from "DIY Solar Power with Will Prowse". That is what I plan to do if my battleborn ever wears out. He is good at finding low cost lifepo4 batteries. He not only tests them but physically rips them apart to verify it is a good and safe build. For example, many claim they have low temp sensors but often he finds they don't. That could be an issue for some setups. Overall though lifepo4 batteries are cheaper than lead since they last MUCH longer and a ton less maintenance. Just a bigger up front cost.
This happens when the cables linking the batteries together are too loose and not really-really tight. A golf cart mechanic told me this, and since I've tightened all the cables down to each battery, I've not had another problem.
You know you're getting the straight skinny when the guy wears the electrical tape and paper towel bandage.... that'll get you through the day no problems. It's the fancy band-aid and rubber glove wearing jerks ya gotta watch for... and make sure they don't run off with your 10mm socket!
6 yrs later you’re still helping folks. Saved me a lot of time, God bless you.
Facts!!
Thanks. Loved how it started “kids flipped the golf cart”. That’s my world too.
Finally, a no nonsense demonstration. Nice job!
I just snapped the terminal on an ATV battery I bought today. Now I don't need to buy another battery. Thank you.
My kids were riding our golf cart like an ATV and did the same thing. You saved us - Thank you!

I disconnected all the 6v batteries (6*6=36V) in my Club Car over the weekend and broke a post. Looks like this is the solution. Thank you!
Awesome video! I just did something silly and melted a battery terminal. Great to know I can repair it :)
Great video! I've looked high and low trying to find a stud like you use. What is it called or where can I find one like that?
I've used a 5/16"-18 set screw 7/8" inches long installed with the use of a 5/16"-18 tap.
Another great one. I don't have a broken battery post, but this has some good machinist lessons in it. Thank you for sharing.

Genius level stuff right here, thanks my truck just shut off while driving, the neg post was broken in half
how did you manage to do that? 🤨
Thank you. You just saved me a lot of money!
Can you do this same thing with a gel optima battery ?, thank you - great video
Thank you sir! I appreciate the video and it saved me from buying a battery!!😊😊😊
Great!

If you go to far in will it affect the battery? Accidentally went straight threw
Won't dissimilar metals cause buildup of sulfates around the terminal area?
Probably.but it’s cheap and an easy fix and works fine . Just buy a new battery if need be in the future
Can this method be used to repair a broken motorcycle battery terminal?

@@tomdixko8900 thanks for ur reply. Only the post was knocked off by corrosion, however we were able to fix it using ur method.

Good one on battery term fix.. What l want to know is what caused my positive terminal to melt on Briggs and Stratton mower..!?

Couldn't you run a bottom tap into the hole to cut the threads instead of just forcing the bolt down into the lead? Thanks. Jpol.
You mean like 3/8-16 or some junk? Nah, this way is badass. 😏
Hey Thomas Brian, My battery post did not break off it came right out of the battery! Is it repairable or should I just get another battery?

Yes, the bolt will corrode over time. Best to use stainless steel.
Smear the bottom end of bolt with grease(Vaseline works too) to help with future corrosion
A piece of all thread and a nut would work as Well for those having a hard time finding studs
Hi my batrie termnol is lose from the batrie it self it shakeing can it fixed like ur video
How do you fix a threaded spinning post.
Got a 1000 CCA semi truck battery with an overtightened nut that made the post spin now.
Can you take the post out? If so, you might try pouring melted lead in the hole and carefully (very carefully) insert the post into the melted lead.
what stud bolt do you use?
Stainless steel would be best.
Thanks for the video, appreciate it lots
better than wasting a $100+ battery. i assumed this would work but had to see if others tried it.
Does anybody know the answer to the question I posed Sbyron about metal being exposed to the acid?

tap it first 80% then you wont snap the post underneath with so much torque- I've seen it happen
My guy has a different idea for “tapping” threads lol 🤦♂️
By "tap" I think you should be tap thread new threads... not hammer the stud into vigin metal.
Damn, good idea. Thx.
Can I do that to a morticylcle battery or mooed
Want to try something similar to the size post. The simple fixes are not working, it's too stripped.

Thank you!!!
It worked thanks.
I did it bub we winning now baby
