It seems to me that the Vegas line is correct. Especially because Oregon must travel 2000 miles. That said, Oregon has a great defense as does Penn State and Oregon has more offensive weapons and a better QB. Oregon won't try to throw the long ball unless they get the match-up they want with their wide receivers. Penn State has had to struggle on a lot of fronts not the least being lack of alignment with the administration in order to keep rising. it's at its peak developmentally in terms of recruiting but it's not at the level of the top programs that have been in the playoffs. it has a Paterno tradition of trying to win with high character kids. so the game management criticism of Franklin misses the point. if he wins a big game it will still be overachieving.

A thought experiment: imagine an SEC division with Alabama, Georgia, and Ole Miss. Not to mention that Franklin doesn't stack top 5 classes because he lacks the instituonal and donor support because PSU is still dealing with the 2011 fallout. There are Paterno people on the board and among the donors who never will accept Franklin as this outsider. He coaches with one hand tied behind his back internally. Scholarships? They administration refused to fund single bed dorms and a meal table for years. They finally have new leaders who only hit there 18 months ago. It seems to me that the Vegas line is correct. Especially because Oregon must travel 2000 miles. That said, Oregon has a great defense as does Penn State and Oregon has more offensive weapons and a better QB. Oregon won't try to throw the long ball unless they get the match-up they want with their wide receivers. Oregon will be happy to dink and dunk down the field, Oregon can run the ball better than Penn St.
Yeah. I largely agree. I will say I think Allar could be the best QB in the conference if he had receivers of Oregon's caliber. No disrespect to Gabriel. Phenomenal QB and the Ducks are lucky to have him. Should be close game. I expect Penn State defensive line will do better than OSU, but the secondary may struggle a bit. Offensively you'll see more out of Penn State than Ohio State saw from them, but I have a hard time seeing it being enough.
I think this game will be a close one. I havent watched Penn State very much this season. But they aren't here by accident. I think this will be a defensive game. Oregon struggles vs good defenses in the red zone. Will be interesting to see how they matchup vs Penn State. Go Ducks!
Penn State has had to struggle on a lot of fronts not the least being lack of alignment with the administration in order to keep rising. it's at its peak developmentally in terms of recruiting but it's not at the level of the top programs that have been in the playoffs. it has a Paterno tradition of trying to win with high character kids. so the game management criticism of Franklin misses the point. if he wins a big game it will still be overachieving.

Michigan defense has a bunch of first rounders too(it’s funny with talking heads all the teams do) and until this week they had the best d line in the country(Michigan), no Tez, no Burch, and Oregon was fine. Its an NIL thing. PSU just needs 75% of the NIL of the elite teams to be their equal. Hence Franklin is every bit as good a coach as Lanning, Kirby, etc. Culturally Penn State is behind the elite schools.

This is the best thing for Penn State and prob Oregon are top teams last 20 yrs and 10 yrs just have not had as many top recruit players as Alabama OSU and recently Georgia.

Along the lines of the ceiling convo (at 2:00), people do not appreciate what Franklin has done and has been up against. A thought experiment: imagine an SEC division with Alabama, Georgia, and Ole Miss. Ole Miss is rocked with a monumental scandal that cripples their program for ~decade, not having a full cycle of 100% scholarship allotment from 2013-2020…on top of fines, reputational damage, etc. And, instead of being celebrated for overcoming a near SMU death penalty (routinely winning 10+ games, making new years six bowls) ppl just go why can’t they beat Alabama and Georgia!? They can’t show up for big games!! They’re choke artists!! And all the rest…I hope at least some people grasp how ridiculous the Franklin narratives are now. It’s highly improbable you’re going to beat Michigan/Ohio State/Bama/Georgia when you don’t have the same number of scholarships they do let alone when you’re scrapping and clawing to recruit on their level after a monumental scandal. Thank! You! There was no equivalent of the B1G East in the SEC without the added benefit of playing UMass in November. Not to mention that Franklin doesn't stack top 5 classes because he lacks the instituonal and donor support because PSU is still dealing with the 2011 fallout. There are Paterno people on the board and among the donors who never will accept Franklin as this outsider.
He coaches with one hand tied behind his back internally. Scholarships? They administration refused to fund single bed dorms and a meal table for years. They finally have new leaders who only hit there 18 months ago. They're judging Franklin based on what he can do with their support and not based on what happened in 5 or 10 years ago. So far he's 28-3 in the regular season which isn't bad.

Penn State schedule was not difficult this year so they need to capitalize as it wont always be that way. I dont trust James Franklin vs any good teams, obviously.
