    Hi. Nice videos. And a charming hostess.
    Just a word about this SWS, I was aware of only one survivor from a belgian collection (sold in USA and France in last 90's if I remember well).
    And there is no body left, only chassis.
    And they have 5 ! What a job !

    Schweres Wehrmacht Schlepper (SwS). A rationalized universal halftrack transport meant to replace the 1 ton (SdKfz 10) and 3 ton (SdKfz11), halftrack types already in production. Like many German mid-war exigencies, SwS was introduced into a national manufacturing effort already over-committed and under sustained aerial assault on its strategic infrastructure. The SwS had a 100HP engine for its 15 short tons of weight; about 6.7hp/ton, and 27kph speed (16.2mph)*.
    In the rationalization plan, the SwS was going to take on roles meant for heavier, or more powerful, machines as well. An experimental version was trialed mounting the 3.7cmFlaK43 (as was already done on SdKfz 6 and 7). Another possible military application was the single 15cm PzW 42 prototype. The other tracked transport/lorry for motorized resupply columns (the USA Red Ball Express comes to mind in that regard) would be the also standardized RSO (Raupenschlepper Ost), Alltrack vehicle. Was SwS a worthwhile vehicle? After the war Tatra continued to produce an improved edition for some years. That sort of says "yes".
    *For comparison, the SdKfz 10 had essentially the same engine, but only weighed 3.75tons, giving it a P:W of 26.6/1 (26.6hp/ton). The SdKfz 7 had a 133hp engine for its 12.6 tons (10.5hp/ton). The SwS was, indeed, not meant to be a combat vehicle. What was desperately needed was a good, solid, heavy load halftrack. The trade-off came in ease and cheapness of mass production. SwS was a far better design for mass production, saving materials, and reducing man-hours involved in assembly.
    The problem for strategical and operational readiness was that the armed, front-line, military was already stealing all of the good transport and burning it out for lack of spares. Roads were poor in the east, and they were usually clogged with refugees, and advancing/retreating military formations. The simplified tracked transport vehicle idea solved a lot of problems at once. Problems with allocation of manufacturing resources reduced the overall impact of the SwS to a mere 825 vehicles.

    This is so cool. Those guys put a lot into restoring these vehicles. I had a buddy that used to restore jeeps. I rode in one with him once. He had a wooden M2 Machine gun mounted on it. For Halloween he and some of his re-enactment buddies dressed up as Paratroopers - with real weapons (I would assume no ammo) - and went out clubbing .... My buddy was a cop so ... I guess he could get away with that.

    I love how Germans always say "directly". Isn't this the vehicle that the Sovs had to use like 4 of to shift the Maus? ...And Hilary Doyle and I have the same hat! Awesome! (...for what it's worth I've got one of those "incompatible with television" jackets as well... still to this day people persist in wearing them when they know they're going to be on television and I don't know why. I mean, like professional presenters who really should know that pattern plays merry hell with television cameras.)

    I wonder why the Germans did not put a front powered axle on this vehicle.
    Or why they just didnt say screw it and run the tracks all the way to the front so they would have a complete tracked vehicle.
    The tracks must have to be skid steered anyway so why bother with an apparently nearly useless front drive axle?
    Knowing the Germans.they must have had excellent reasons.

    • @DoctorShocktor
      @DoctorShocktor 4 роки тому

      You’re looking at it backwards. Half tracks have tracks only to spread out the weight distribution in the rear better than wheels, giving better cross country performance. The tracks don’t skid steer at all, and it’s purpose is to be a front wheeled vehicle that is simple to operate by regular drivers into without requiring tracked vehicle training. Once tires improved in size and durability, half tracks were eliminated by fully wheeled personnel carriers.

      @@hilarylouisdoyle1529 War is one big competition on ALL aspects.
      And of course the German halftracks were great machines BUT the American M2, M4, M5 and M6 while being less complicated cover all the German halftrack @ twice(!!) the speed in the same purpose.
      Using those complicated (so smaller numbers produced) halftracks caused that there were always shortages and that ment that the Germans had to rely for a good part on the pulling power of thousands of horses! 😉
