Even the books had strong subtext between Cara and Kahlan. Watching the series, there is no way to deny it. Kahlan is a better ruler than Richard ever could be, and Cara is a stronger, better lover than Richard ever could be to Kahlan.
Kahlan is too strong for Richard, but she is just perfect for Mord'Sith Cara. :D

Terry Goodkind's series was laced with Objectivism. Richard was the "hero" but the other characters in the series matured beyond hero-worship and his objectivist points. They breathed, and exerted their own will. Kahlan loving Cara, not as a "hero" but as a lover, and rejecting the "hero" Richard, rather suits the series nicely.
I feel no shame when anyone changes the Terry Goodkind paradigm between them, because ultimately, Kahlan and Cara as written by him would fall in love.
