Whilst side-scrolling beat-em ups existed prior to Final Fight, it was Capcom's seminal side-scroller that really perfected the template and set the standard for genre. Boasting super-smooth scrolling, brilliant graphics and a fighting system that was super-easy to pick up and play, Final Fight was the mainstay of any decent arcade in the late 80's and early 90's.
Capcom ported the game to the SNES in 1990, but it lacked much of what made the arcade version so great. Not only did it lack a 2-player mode, Guy was absent from the game altogether, as was the entirety of the fourth level. Needless to say, many players felt that Capcom could have handled the conversion a lot better.
Capcom would later release a version of the game for Sega's CD add-on for the popular Mega Drive/Genesis platform in 1993. Boasting a full CD soundtrack, I thought it would be interesting to play through this version of the game and see how it compares to the arcade, as well as the lacklustre SNES conversion.
The most significant upgrade that the CD format brings to the table is the fully mastered CD soundtrack and, I have to say, it's seriously impressive. Not only has all of the in-game music been recreated to a high standard with proper instruments and synths, Capcom also recorded voice-overs for the intro and ending sequences; it's pretty cheesy (as you'd probably expect for early 90's), but it's still a cool feature given that FM synthesis and scratchy speech samples were still the norm for console games at the time.
On the subject of the intro, I noticed that there are a couple of new scenes added to this version not present in the original arcade version; I'm unsure as to whether these are exclusive to this port or whether it's present on other conversions, but it's a small, if neat addition.
In addition to the Red Book CD soundtrack, all of the digitised effects samples from the original arcade board feature in this version as well, and they sound excellent. I don't have any information to hand, but I suspect that Capcom made use of the Ricoh PCM chip in the Sega CD unit to play these samples; the quality is far too good to be using the base console's sound chip.
Of course, fancy graphics and audio would be for nought if the gameplay wasn't any good. As you might expect from Capcom, the game plays just as well as the arcade version - everything from the controls to the fighting action feels absolutely spot-on; some of the enemy AI behaviour felt slightly different to that of the arcade, but this is just an observation, not a complaint.
The game features excellent graphics and include all of the animation from the arcade version; watch Guy's walking animation and it appears to be just as fluid and features as many frames as the arcade.
If I have one complaint, it's that the colours of most of the sprites have been altered to accommodate the console's hardware; the end result is the game looks a little washed-out compared to other editions with many of the characters featuring a slightly sepia hue.
In fact, Capcom have put a lot more work into conversion than you might first realise - in a side-by-side comparison it's evident that Capcom has actually redrawn all of the artwork and sprite assets to fit the console's screen resolution/aspect ratio (which is different to the arcade). The comparison also reveals other differences, such as the way the scrolling backdrop from the elevator section during round 4 is completely absent in the CD version.
Comparisons aside, there's no denying that this is an absolutely brilliant port of Final Fight, arguably better in every department when compared to the SNES version (and subsequent sequels). If you want as near-perfect a conversion for a home system (excluding the Sharp X68000), this is definitely the version to go for.

Final Fight CD Longplay (Sega CD/Mega CD) [60 FPS]: Capcom deliver the goods with this great conversion for the Sega CD platform!
Read the video description for my review!
This doesn't reply to the question, nowhere to tell us which mode was it. I play it dozen of times and we die playing 2 players always at the Katana guy or after the 3 Andores guy, we play normal mode. In your video, the Katana guy didn't move a pixel and you beat it easily.
Your description is too long and doesn't answer to my question. So enjoy your negative review.

Awesome job, man!
Sega always had the best soundtrack on games. These songs get you up in the morning. 👏
Yes!
No the sega soundtrack is rubbish compared to the proper version
@@StraightOuttaUrbex Rofl.... what was so great about these midi-songs? Final Fight CD had so great songs, they were on the same level with AC/DC's "Thunderstruck".
The arrangers of this soundtrack are brilliant. They turned an ok arcade score into something extraordinary.
Only the one that was just after the train travel was not matching to the original sounds.
*turned a perfect arcade score into something bland
@@solarflare9078 only for you.
@@biglui Is that why my reply has 3 likes?
@@solarflare9078 Nah, suit yourself. This Sega OST beats the other 8-bit versions.
this game blows away the arcade game and the SNES versions. Nice Game.
SEGA cd was a great port for sure
14:33 I hate it when you're in a tube tunnel eating a cooked chicken on the bone and then you accidentally jump in to a boxing ring with a Samurai....
Yeah, hate it when that happens. 😂
Especially when you’re watched by a hungry crowd
Final fight cd is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME and STUNNINGLY AMAZING
This is gonna be on the Genesis Mini 2. VERY excited to finally play this version.
I'm getting the Mini to I can't wait.
the Mini 2 is great. Sega was king of the early 90s
@@jpetersongamingtoo bad dreamcast wasn't as good as these
Imagine having to fight off a load of bad dudes after having just eaten an entire roast beef

Still have my sega cd and Final Fight game. I put the CD in Prowler when I'm driving at excessive speed down the highway...The Music is pure adrenaline
Plymouth prowler??
I’m glad to see everyone agrees that the soundtrack arrangement for this version is beyond great but that subway level bgm @0:07:15 is so badass, I’d bump that in my car on high volume!
One of the best game soundtracks of all time!
do not forget streets of rage
Dat OST!
Listening to this soundtrack is like dipping my feet into the holy fountain of youth.
Men the soundtrack of this version is the best!!!! I love it
Might have been my favorite Sega CD game I had. Still looks fun.
This game never gets old, no matter what console its played on. They keep re-releasing it
The amazing conversion of this great game was literally the list of reasons why I wanted that console back in the day, and was my signature Christmas present when I was 12 years old in 95 as well!
This really is the best port of the arcade you could get. I can’t believe how good this version was, amazing.
the cd storage space really helped with this port of the game I guess
Essa versão sem dúvida é a melhor... o gráficos as músicas e o final mt top.. um do melhores beat up de todos os tempos
This is the best port of the arcade, how it hasn't done the rounds on complimation pack's I'll never know.
Gba version is better
The arcade original was on Capcom Classics Collection 1 PS1, XBox, and Gamecube. And it didn't have the shitty voice acting of this game, nor the mehh remixed music.
It's on the Genesis Mini 2!
They probably didn't have the rights to re-release it, since it was also Sega's intellectual property too. But it's good it did get one after all this time though!
The soundtrack and setting does set a great action movie vibe like you’re in Die Hard or Roadhouse or something lol
Hagger looks like he has definitely danced at the blue oyster bar.
awesome skillz dude.
The soundtrack is amazing. I bought a Sega CD and never played this Final Fight. Kinda of a Bummer.
This game was extremely hard to find. I had the Sega CD in the 90's, and was always looking for new and cool games to buy, but I swear I never saw this game for sale or rent anywhere. I'm guessing it had a limited production run, it sold very well, and those who owned the game never sold it or gave it away.
I got this game (along with a Sega CD) for Christmas in 95. I remember Toys R' Us having it back the, and was why I wanted this system too! Even if that console had little else going for it, finally being able to play Final Fight at home in near arcade perfect form made it well worth having though!
2:26
That’s why Cody went down on his luck in future games: He cursed himself by breaking that mirror.
Was so excited when I got this. Felt great having a true to the arcade version especially after owning the butchered SNES version. Wasn't a huge fan of them remixing the soundtrack at first but it grew on me over time. Still prefer the original arcade music though.
Me too! This, along with the Sega CD system (with this game being the sole reason why I wanted that console back in the day) was my big, signature Christmas present when I was 12 years old in 95! Finally being able to play this great game the way it was meant to be played at home in near arcade perfect form was a dream come true for me back then for certain as well!
One of the rare times a home version of an arcade game was better than the original. Amazing given Sega Genesis was not as advanced as SNES.
you're dreaming if you thought this is on genesis.
and the arcade runs better than this sloppy thing.
This version has never been topped
What are you talking about? Get real.
So guy did all that fighting and killing to save this girl so she could be with Cody in the end? Lol it’s funny the way Guy reacted to when Jessica calls out Cody. Best combo ever.
APPARENTLY Guy wasn't after Jessica, he was beating up Cody to make him listen to Jessica.
@Retro Storm Because it wasn't clear, it's been debated for decades. Especially with the ending of Double Dragon many thought it was like that. Many thought he was jealous.
God, how odd it took them until this version to include all playable heroes, as well as two player, dang!
Wow the soundtrack is amazing vs the snes. I just bought this game can’t wait to play 😎
Extraordinary music!!!
English: "Hello. Mike Haggar here."
Japanese: "It is I, Mike Haggar."
OST quality beyond all!!!
Está esa todas a luces la mejor conversión doméstica del clásico juego de arcades
Although short this took up my childhood
17:18 now that's an impressive reaction right there
The nusic is amazing
Why isnt this version on the ps4 beat em up collection? This is definitely the definitive edition
It's a good port that looks like it was left out in the sun too long. I'm really looking forward to the fan-made Sega Genesis port of the game... no attachments necessary!
The best scrolling brawler for any SEGA 16-Bit system, along with Streets of Rage 2. If you had those two games, you didn't need any more team-up fighters (well, except for Golden Axe II).
A technological marvel for the system, it blows any SNES version of Final Fight (even 3) out of the water, because of its gameplay, two player capability, full roster of characters and much less censorship. The faster gameplay and smooth scrolling also puts this game above all the competition
You compared a CD game to a cart game, yeah, totally fair comparison.
Sorry, I'd prefer to play Final Fight 3 over the first game, played the first game far too many times at this point.
Has nothing to do with CD. He was talking of 2-player-mode, full set of playable characters and stuff like no censorship or little on the girls. But if you want, watch Streets of Rage 2 on cartridge: 2-player-mode, 4 characters and Streets of Rage 3 has besides at least 2 hidden characters. Japanese version has 3 hidden characters I think.
The early days of voice acting in videogames are something, terrible but mesmerizing
Actually there was some amazing early voice work it was just for most games done on the cheap. I often think in a way modern VA is worse as it feel like generic extremes like generic anime, generic super serious, generic cartoon etc. For RPG's in particular they feel more Saturday morning cartoon than ever.
the voice were always muffled. It was great
@@revengenerd1 Okay, while I miss the cheeseball acting of some of these older games a bit, saying videogame voice acting nowadays is bad is just straight up dumb, please.
Especially when the voice acting in this game is bad beyond reason.
It's dumb you assume I said bad! Read what I said again. Most modern VA feels phoned in and generic to me and lacks the fun factor, and emotion the VA in this game was so bad it was good and that made it enjoyable
@@revengenerd1 Well I don't think modern voice acting sounds generic either, let alone phoned in! Yeah I miss these very early and incompetent voice overs but not even all of these are bad in a particularly memorable way.
Hands down best beat them up ever. I got my Sega CD from a kid and run this SCART. Never gets old.
Hell na sor2 is better than this lol
@@adrenalinex4 Not to me. I really enjoyed the soundtrack here. SO2 is good though.
You can play the arcade version of FF in MAME with Sega CD music.
@@youtubesuresuckscock Thanks but I play my sega cd.
Oh my god that music 🎉🔥🍻
It was about time that you kneed them, after 3 stages.
Mike Haggar was always so proper and gentleman sounding!
I WISH YOU MAKE A NEW FINAL FIGHT FOR ALL WITH NEW PEOPLE
1:04 sounds like the programmers trying to put on an american accent
Hello mr Heaggah….
And besides that in original concept or in the arcade release Jessica was also raped (!iI|🤔|Ii!)
best sega cd game ever!😊
All Andore want it is a hugh.
Rambo 1st blood : and all he ever wanted was to eat (intro town cops)
Guy like gilius thunderhead in goldenaxe were always the first characters i would play as in the games then the others afterwards (guy's a damn ninja, and thunderhead a badass drawf). I know the others are cool but that's what made guy stand out just like gilius in goldenaxe from the others to me.
Guy was everyone's favorite to play as it seemed, even if he was the worst out of the three. His speed was good, but was also very weak, and was best left to a two player game also.
@@freakyfornash He wasn't really that weak, though. His faster gameplay just made him much more fun to play than Cody and Haggar.
SEGA CD! boy was it rare to play one of those
This was by far the best home console version back before PC emulators we’re a thing
Graphics aren’t the best, but wow, the music more that makes up for it .
the music is more charming at the arcade i love the synth sound of the original :)
The music is fuckin dope
I struggled and still couldn't beat this even after repeated attempts,.
IMO this player makes it look much easier than it actually is.
Great soundtrack though.
The few enemies make this game much easier
You mentioned a fully mastered CD soundtrack in the description. Does that mean this is one of those games that you could insert into a regular CD player or CD drive to play the soundtrack?
Edit: Never mind. I got a false perspective based on the description. The soundtrack for all the games is available separately.
I remember doing this with some PS1 games. Pop them into a CD player and listen to the tracks!
Loved this game, I remember hwo atmospheric it was. Probably better than SOR2
SOR was fun and upbeat whereas Final Fight actually felt scary. I for one, was intimidated by those Andre the Giant looking dudes.
@@jpetersongaming Definitely, it also felt like it was a much bigger game.
@@playbackvintagehifihunter9669 agreed
Was never a Sega fan due to its weaker console versions, but damn. They definitely owned Final Fight with this one. I mean, it is CD so that's an advantage, but still. The music is definitely more cinematic and the graphics seem to be either on par with Arcade or perhaps better.
The graphics most definitely were not on par with the arcade the arcade and even the Super Nintendo sported much better graphics the higher color palette and higher resolution to Sega CD by contrast is more muddy and more grainy. However the Sega CD version is by far the best version out there even surpasses the arcade because of all the content the arcade didn't have the soundtrack is purely amazing.
The colours may be horrible but that voice acting makes up for it completely 😂
After looking around on ebay, a Mega CD and a copy of Final Fight will set you back $300+..
Just use Kega Fusion and download the Disc image.
Not worth the asking price when this version once upon a time about a decade ago would only run you $30.
Is there any point in this game where there are more than 4 enemy sprites on the screen at once? The SNES version was only able to manage 3 enemies at a time which made it ridiculously easy. The SNES version could have been much better even with just one more enemy being availableon screen.
12:05 that's the game upped the difficulty. the enemies more attacking. these games were designed to eat coins
This version still didn't throw the amount of enemies onscreen that the arcade version does. The arcade version literally swarms you with several enemies at the same time, especially towards the latter half of the game.
@@Bloodreign1
this is the arcade one. it's a direct port with cd sound
@@fraser_mr2009 ...Are you okay?
mike hagger. it's like something out of a b movie.
Hi, friend
What emulator have you played it on?
Thank you so much.
Poison
He he he Mr Haggar!
Andore is a translation-mistake, the "o" is silent, its the japanese "do". His name is Andre and based on Andre the Giant. You can see this reference in Streetfighter 3, where his name is Hugo and Hugo has that intro with Alex like Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania.
Yeah long time ago ppl knew all along
1:05 "hELLo miKe HagGar hERe" 😂😂😂
arcade soundtrack better
One of the BEST Final Fight games ! With the Game Boy Advance version ! Final Fight One. (2001)
Final Fight on Super Nintendo (1992) is very BAD ! Only one player. Guy has disappeared !
Although Capcom did release Final Fight - Guy to bring him back 😀
@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays Ok.
Final Fight 2 and Final Fight 3 are exclusive games for Super Nintendo ! Never released in others consoles !
@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays Yeah, but Cody had to be removed in order to make room for him in that version though! ;)
The SNES one was put onto a smaller cart size, had they gone with a bigger cart (or did it with FF Guy at least released later on), it would've turned out better than it did. Final Fight 2 and 3 literally had multiplayer, and a bigger selection of playable characters than the first SNES offering.
@@Bloodreign1 Yes. 😀
Lucia, in Final Fight 3, is a DLC character in Street Fighter 5. (PS4) 😚😉🙂
Capcom hated working with sega's cartridge software. But it looks like anything CD-based they did an extraordinary job. That's why everything Capcom on Saturn and Dreamcast are second to none in home consoles.
Capcom had nothing to do with the Sega CD version. Sega developed it internally. Capcom basically just gave them permission.
Could never complete this game, didn’t even come close
My dumbass skips the intro but remember beating the game and accidentally go from Guy to Cody lmao!🤣🤣 Guy kicking Cody's ass before sending him to Jessica makes me laugh everytime~!XD
2:26 Epic!!!
Like axel in street of rage 2 or/and 3 intro 💥 👊🏼 😡🦐
Blows Capcom didn't release this version on their beat em up for current consoles.
Andore Jr
This is the censored version as Roxy and Poison are wearing different clothes. Still a great game though 😊
A great game. I resent SEGA, for put this game only on sega cd.
Well many versions of this game were released, but this particular one had to stay Sega CD exclusive though. It was an amazing port for it's time, and far superior to the badly butchered Super N.E.S. one, which was horrid compared to the arcade too.
Was also released on gba
@@Eunhon93 Yeah, and that was a pretty good version for the most part too.
The Snes got Final fight 2 and 3 which made up for the rushed launch title.
This music is Iconic!!!
Why does guy face look like Frankenstein
Knock off of street of rage
I had a sega cd and liked the arcade version of final fight, but I swear that the sega cd version had poor distribution or a limited production run because I never saw it for sale or rent anywhere, not even at secondhand stores or at garage sales (and I didn't know anyone who had a copy). It must have been on the shelves for like 6 months and all the copies were sold quickly and the owners never sold or gave them away. On the other hand, many other Sega CD games aren't hard to come by.
And I figure that rental copies were probably stolen by people who desperately wanted the game.
I only knew one person that owned a Sega CD, and they surely didn't own Final Fight for it.
Why won’t they put this version on ps5 Xbox and switch? Do they hate money?
Oh man the corny voice acting is terrible... I love it!
Nothing can be compared with top selling street of rage 1,2 3
Both SOR and Final Fight released in 1989. SOR hit consoles first and Final Fight followed. The SNES and Geneses version of Final Fight didn't release until 1991. You really can't compare them until Final Fight was ported to console. I had a lot more fun when I was able to finally play Final Fight on console. I picked up the Sega CD version and haven't looked back.
@@jasonhull2163 maybe you might liked final fight even I played in super nes version not my type of game so skip the whole series
@@ResidentNotEvil5 It always kills me how these types of videos bring out so many Trolls like you. If another beat them up game besides Streets Of Rage gets talked about you Troll fuckers get so butt hurt. I've said Street's Of Rage was good. This is still my favorite. This isn't even a comparison video. It's like all you Trolls do is put down your fake pocket pussys and storm out of your moms basement to lash out at any thought of someone playing a game you don't like. This is not a comparison it is a play through. So I will end this by letting you know I could give 2 shits about your opinions. You failed like a typical Troll and I don't give a shit if you find the Streets Of Rage games good.. Since you want to keep going way of topic how about you make a video of Final Fight CD and compare it to Streets Of Rage Series? Put it on UA-cam and do a breakdown. You would literally be a real example of a Caveman trying to play and explain video games.
Both good games in their own way
music is awesome....snes is most colorfull
I don’t get why Katana was so easy to beat and you had it on Hard. You’d think he would bum rush you like mad after taking his sword.
I appreciate the CD soundtrack and I like playing the CD game but something about the arcade music just hits and the arcade version graphics and animation is better
I heard this was intended to be a Mega Drive game without the CD add-on before Sega had created Streets of Rage as a take on this game.
But Sega was going to get the game's license before Nintendo did at that time.
I would believe that. I'd also believe the music would be closer to the arcade this way too
Would have been fantastic if this was released on the Mega Drive in 1990 on a 8 megabit cartridge would have blew the Snes version away.
streets of rage?
is it me or this game was easier for me in sega version compared to arcade? i had easier time on mame version
The home versions were all easier than the arcade, none swarmed you with the amount of bad guys at one time that the arcade version would do.
Jessica...challenge accepted
Guy kicks Cody’s arse for whatever reason 🤷🏽
