The Missouri needs a theme song "Here she comes to save the day, the Mighty Mo is on the way" sung to the tune of the theme from the Mighty Mouse cartoon show. (I just dated myself). She's definitely earned it this winter.
I can't begin to imagine how much force it takes to try and make even a small turn in the ice. I'm surprised they didn't call for a tug to break the ice almost immediately Thanks for the video. I hope you went and had a hot chocolate after 2 hours in the cold
Lots of ships were struggling with the ice this year. Saw this live, but your view was way cooler! And, I loved the banter with the other videographer.
The Manitoulin is currently stuck in Lake Erie, just left Buffalo and are waiting for the Coast Guard to hopefully come tomorrow and break the ice up for them
In our neck of the woods the Manitoulin is stuck in Lake Erie, near Buffalo! I think maybe the shipping season needs to end a bit sooner. I hope these ships can be gotten out soon. I doubt that the respective crews and captains want to spend winter vacation this way…….
I believe it was last year, at the end of the shipping season, when ice prevented the American Century from even getting into the lock at the Soo. She tried like five times until giving up until the next day. Her woes stranded ships on both sides of the locks. Ice messes with everything.
Yes, the ice can be very difficult to deal with. I kept thinking, if they only called for a tug when they departed, they would have been out the door in 1 hour, instead it was 5 hours!
I remember the first year I started watching the ships and I remember watching the live cams as they were heading out towards the canal and all of a sudden they would come to a stop. It’s hard to believe that ice could stop them. That has to be really thick. I can just hear the captain saying oh shit we’re stuck lol 😂
Great question. With the ice in the Harbor, they could not turn around in the narrow channel cut through the ice. They backed out and became stuck when they tried the turn around in the basin.
He could not turn around when he pulled out of General Mills, the prop was most likely under the ice enough, the rudder, I had the same thought. The ice was really not that thick, just gets stacked up causing the ship to stop.
Boats and specially footers back in frequently though they are going to different docks! Guess it was time for a back out!! This was fun to watch on the DHC web cams live! Everyone was saying call the Missouri!
Are these ships quite often carrying materials from Canada? If so, I wonder how much Orange Julius Caesar’s tariffs will screw up next seasons vessel traffic.
Backing out of where she was docked. There was a channel cleared for her to move through the ice, but it wasn't wide enough for her to turn around, so she backed as far as the captain thought was safe, then tried to turn around. That was when she got stuck, because the surrounding ice was still too thick for her to maneuver, and she had to call in the big guns - the Missouri, who broke ice and assisted her getting clear enough to exit the port.

I love that! I can hear it in my head now!😊
LOL!
WOW just amazing that ice is strong. You are crazy Paul my goodness 2 hours out there. Big THANKYOU for being there to share this video
thanks! not the 1st time I've been called crazy... 🤣
Sweet moon rise. Way to brave that cold. Be safe.
Thanks, I was bundled up!
Great to see this perspective!!! Thanks for capturing this Paul!
You're welcome!

I actually went home, had dinner, transferred the video, pix I took, went back down there, still stuck, gave up!
Nice work. As much as I like the salutes at the bridge watching these guys go to work is even better.
Thanks!
Thanks for staying out there. It's hard to believe a ship that size can get stuck
Its amazing the power of the ice sheets! They get stuck when trying to turn, not much of an advantage on the side ice pressure.
Lots of ships were struggling with the ice this year. Saw this live, but your view was way cooler! And, I loved the banter with the other videographer.
We were the only ones out there! Entertained each other!

Bummer!
Great video. Thanks for sharing snd for once again braving the elements to get it for us.❤❤
Appreciate it! It was pretty rough out there!

And to think last year, very little ice!
Unreal. Thanks for this video
Thanks!
for the ice to capture a ship that size...it really gets COLD in Duluth !!!!
It has been a pretty chilly winter this season, last season, not so much.

Beautiful night beautifully shot 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🤙🏼🤟🏼🖖🏼🇳🇿
Thank you!
I never thought something that big and that heavy could get stuck in ice. That must've been a little inconvenient.
Indeed! Mother nature always wins!

I was amazed how the Captain maintained his composure! I would have most likely not maintained my composure...
mmhmm
great moon shots!
Thanks! After all the waiting I did out there, the moon rise was my reward I guess!
Too cold brrrr. I hear ice squeeking😅😅😅😅
That could have been my knees.... 😅
Why is the ship going backwards!
Great question. With the ice in the Harbor, they could not turn around in the narrow channel cut through the ice. They backed out and became stuck when they tried the turn around in the basin.
Why go backwards? Wouldn't that be more likely to cause damage to the rudder and propeller?
She was staying in the channel where the ice had been broken up enough for her to move. The channel was too narrow for her to turn around.

what's your estimate on ice thickness?
It was really only about 4-6 inches of broken plate ice, when it all stacks together, there's the trouble.
why do they go in reverse ?
He was "sweeping" the ice around to get some more room to move. Somewhat like rocking a vehicle stuck in the snow.
How can a ship haul iron ore, and then grain? Won’t the grain be contaminated by the dust etc, that’s left after the ore is offloaded?
They flush the holds when they have a cargo change
It takes several horsepower to keep those propellers turning
Just a few
It certainly does!
Isn't she moving backwards?
Boats and specially footers back in frequently though they are going to different docks! Guess it was time for a back out!! This was fun to watch on the DHC web cams live! Everyone was saying call the Missouri!
They had to back out, the Ice would not allow them to turn around and go out bow 1st.
Any guess what the Missouri charges for something like this?
Just a guess, 4 hour minimum, $ 3500 / hr ?
WOW!!
Are these ships quite often carrying materials from Canada? If so, I wonder how much Orange Julius Caesar’s tariffs will screw up next seasons vessel traffic.
Hurts don't it

@ There is and will be a ton of hurt in Trump’s America.
Please educate me as to why the ship is moving in reverse. Thank you.

@audreyjohnson4599 Thank you for enlightening me. That sounds very logical.
The tug Missouri is worth her weight in gold...⚓🧊
The funny part is the tugs dock right on the corner, to the left of the video! Pretty much throw a snowball and hit them..
