I love how they handled qual. He is basically paused for 80 years and instantly facing magic literally made to stop his attack, see it once and figures out its waekness. His magic might be old but his intelligence and skill is timeless.
One other thing is that Qual doesn't know that humankind have learned to fly as well - later in the season it's mentioned that it's a new technique and previously only demons and monsters could fly. Qual was only focusing on the ground and for all he knew, both Frieren and Fern were still behind the barrier - because, from his perspective, where else could they possibly be?

5:45 - Sour Grapes is Eisen's favourite desert. Frieren gets a spell to turn grapes sour in the second episode iirc. Also, whilst Freiren says she doesn't know anything about them and didn't know anything about them... its not true. She just didn't think she did. The fact that she has all these memories shows that SHE DID KNOW. She just didn't really understand that connection to people.
@@kaigaikaranoWhat a lot of people miss the first time watching this is due to the long lifespan, elves mature slower as well. There’s no urgency to comprehend connections with others. When Fern says “I could be your older sister,” it’s a subtle point… at 16, she’s already more mature than Frieren… she’s fiscally responsible, has more moral integrity, and a higher feeling of responsibility. Regardless of Frieren’s physical age, emotionally she’s still a child struggling to understand her feelings and those of others around her.
I think Freiren just does not realize how valuable those memories were until now. We should realize by now that Freiren does not forget things. For example, even after 50 years she still remembers she left that dragon horn with Himmel, but she does think it is of any importance. But Himmel said it was a very important task left by his most cherished friend.
Remember what Himmel said on their way to the meteor shower "You were always there in those beautiful memories". Himmel always had Frieren in his memories. Now she always has Himmel in her memories.

The best thing about the humor in Frieren is that it doesnt feel forced or cringey like some anime tend to do. this show takes its self serious and it shows even in the humor. Man I Love Frieren
Qual would have been a menace if he got to live. He was the first one to create a spell that pierced almost any defensive magic and was so powerful that the whole team of heroes couldn't defeat him. He replicated the modern defensive spell almost instantly, that tells you about his potential.
Yeah, if he’d walked away from this, the next time we saw him, Zoltraak would go through shields or at least wear them down very fast. Also, it’s worth noting that Fern probably developed her fighting style in this fight.
In the second episode, Fern talked about the odd spells her master liked to collect, but all three spells she mentioned had perfect sense. Frieren got a spell to turn grapes sour, because Eisen loves sour grapes. She got a spell to clean rusty statues, and there's quite a lot of Himmel statues out there. And she also got a spell to make warm tea, and Heiter stopped drinking alcohol, so maybe the tea spell had Heiter in mind. Frieren doesn't understand her own feelings, and doesn't know how to express her feelings, she struggles to express Fern why she bought her a present. I think Frieren express her feelings, her love, buying things and casting spells for the people she loves.
Time being framed from Himmel's death is significant because it's a marker for Frieren realizing that time means something. For most of the show unless it's very specific moments of her past Frieren's flashbacks are her drifting through time. It also led to the theory that this is a story written or told by Frieren in the future because the frame of reference is Himmel's death. Really the only one in the show who has the connection to that moment in history is Frieren.
Everything about Frieren killing Qual was savage as fuck. She wakes him up after 80 years and is like, "Your boss? We killed him. The spell that you'd spent centuries crafting that was the entire focus of your life's work? It ain't shit now and we teach it to literal children." And then she kills him with his own spell. She doesn't use the version developed by humanity that is just ordinary offensive magic. She specifically uses his. And Frieren most certainly knew that it was Fern's birthday. She's been living and traveling with her for 8 years now. Most of those were with Heiter. And Heiter most definitely would have celebrated Fern's birthday, so she would have known when it was.
They always show how many years since himmel's death because its the time where frieren cared about time passing, its like an eye opener for her and that's part of her journey in understanding humans
3:45 Fern actually is very good at remaining undetectable, especially when it comes to hiding her mana so other mages can’t sense it, it was remarked on in episode 1 by Frieren when she was struggling to find Fern in the woods.

One difference here between some of those flashback shows, though, is that you see very little action. Usually this kind of show shows you these epic moments from the past, but we don’t see that. Frieren doesn’t think back on the great struggles of the journey, she thinks about the time one of them was being an idiot or some conversation they had on downtime. The focus isn’t on the feats, but the people.
Also I'm not sure if it has been mentioned yet, but fun fact, the little spells she have been learning are related to their adventure. Fern talks about a spell that turn sweet grapes sour. Eisen's fav food is sour grapes.
The characters in this series are amazing, and they just keep getting better. BTW, the battle music you heard is called "Zoltraak" and the full version is incredible.
Just a lil easter egg that you may have missed (which actually adds a lot of depth to Frieren’s character imo), in the previous episode, some of the “useless” spells Fern was chiding Frieren about was her spell that turns sweet grapes sour, and the spell that polishes bronze statues. In this episode, Eisen mentioned that his favorite food was sour grapes: the more sour the better. We can see how the spells Frieren creates (polishing the statue for Himmell, and turning grapes sour for Eisen), and the way that her party was enjoying themselves while playing in the field of flowers shows Frieren’s motivations behind collecting spells (which I guess she touched on last episode, but it’s so nice that the writers set it up like that for your to learn these things retroactively)
Glad you got a break from crying, this show really hits hard. New to the channel and been enjoying the reacts, keep it going! :D now i got a warning for you... just wait for the ring scene! you'll know.

But why does he don't use it to block frierens spell? because he don't know that she can fly and she was just to quick, i guess. One reminder, both Zoltraaks that shown us in this episode have inverted colors.
The color difference is indirectly explained in a later episode. About this fight, look close and you will see that Qual is doing a bunch of small attacks until he sees one of Fern's small shields break. He reacts noticeably, and that is when he switches to the continuous big blast. Then, after he begins pushing through Fern's shield, the camera is in Qual's point of view and moves side-to-side as he realizes Frieren is missing. Then camera scrolls up as he looks up, surprised that Frieren is flying; just before she blasts him with her version (white core with black outline) of his own spell (black core with white outline).
Yes, the story always go back to Rimel. Flashbacks, time settings (how much time passed) and etc. Because for Frieren her biggest regret was not trying to get to know him better before he passed away. That's why is so important what Fern say at 6:23. Because now she's putting the effort to know the people she holds dear before something happen and she end missing the chance.
A small detail easily missed here, Fern was giving Frieren grief for learning silly spells like one to turn grapes sour.... It was for Issen because he said it was his favorite food.
Something to keep in mind for future episodes is to watch how they do time skips and think about how it might relate to frierens perspective of time. Its just another reasons this anime is top tier.
I always liked the detail that within moments of being unsealed and seeing Fern using Defensice Magic Qual instantly sees and understands the spell because his knowledge of magic is so indepth. Imagine if he'd been allowed like, a week to hang out and study modern magic. He'd probably once again be too powerful for Frieren to handle.
Qual took one look at Fern's shield magic and learned to cast it from his fingertips immediately, then figured out its weakness right after. He is super capable, this fight did him dirty making him look like a fodder.
Qual was shocked to see Frieren flying as flight magic was learned long after he was sealed away. Hence why he lost track of Frieren, he didn't expect her to be above him.
Qual is ridiculous when it comes to magic, he saw their defensive spells for blocking zoltraak which they took like 80 years to develop and he immediately figures it out in mere seconds Btw, the zoltraak used by frieren and I think fern too is a modified version that's used to kill demons
The names are mostly simple German words. Frieren means “freeze”, himmel means “heaven”, eisen means “iron”, etc. The Japanese pronunciation obscures this somewhat.
When it dawned on me that the reason she was learning how to turn grapes sour, it was because she was recalling the memory she had of Heiter when they were all eating desert together. 😭

If you like Frieren, there's a couple other anime I'd recommend to you as well; Mushoku Tensei, and Tonikaku Kawaii. The first one is just an amazing all-around character driven story, and the second _seems_ like just a comfy slice of life anime on the surface, but it is really _a lot_ more than that, but to get the most out of it, you have to both go in blind, and pay close attention.

Every line is a set up for something in the future, and you will be amazed at the connections you spot the second, third, fourth, time through watching this series. Frieren normally was aired the Fridays so we called them "Frieren Fridays" ergo i wait till fridays to watch your reactions to frieren
The names are mostly simple German words. Frieren means “freeze”, himmel means “heaven”, eisen means “iron”, etc. The Japanese pronunciation obscures this somewhat.
Betsu ni...
It's an ambiguous expression in Japanese, but in this case, ''don't worry about it'' would be a closer expression, wouldn't it?
Years since Himmel died - 11 = Fern’s age
When it dawned on me that the reason she was learning how to turn grapes sour, it was because she was recalling the memory she had of Heiter when they were all eating desert together. 😭
Frieren's fight music has me feeling like I am prepared to fight god himself
Has anyone told her that Himmel's VA is Bakugo?
No tears but I saw them eyes get a little glassy a couple times.
You caught me 🫣🫶🏻
@@FlexiejayAnime‼️Everyone locates the series faster with their original names‼️ I don't know why they have the bad habit of translating everything, seriously what is the need to do that 😒
Sad news. Jutsu Kaisen manga concludes with five episodes remaining.残り5話、、はやすぎ!!
I like your new? hairstyle.
Flex can you even imagine that Himmel has the same VA as Bakugo ? 😅
Frieren has known Fern for years at this point, it would be weird if she didn't know her birthday.
Funny thing is, after Fern's encounter with Qual and his oppressive offense, she uses his strategy on everyone
Oh you gonna see himmel even in the next season if we ever got one tho
episode 14 lowkey broke me😭
Just watched your naruto playlist it was awesome and i felt nostalgic... please check out tha anime" the angel next door spoils me rotten"...make sure your insulin levels are up to date because this anime is so sweet
only bad thing is i cant binge your reactions to frieren
Как же автор невероятно красивая, милая и обаятельная. Обожаю ❤
Frieren is not famous, but himmel is famous. Like a band, singer is more famous than the guitarist
nice hairstyle 🙂
Frieren to Qual "Pssh there's been dozen's of wiki's and strategy guides come out since then, Zoltraak is such an F tier spell now" 😏
Then Fern to the granddaughter of the first, first class mage. "My master taught me that basic attack magic is enough to defeat mages of this era."
0:19 I don't wanna be that person to point it out but you didn't see the headstone at the ending 14:27 when they were on the cart leaving. It's to the right.
Duuuude woooow I've seen so many reactions and this is the first time I see that headstone
I'm wondering what other things I haven't seen wow
Its not the skirt fillping kid's anywaysshe is safe on this one
Stoooop - wait…. Nooo 😭 HE DIED RIGHT AFTER they defeated Qual? …….. 🥵💔
@@FlexiejayAnimeSOUSOU NO FRIEREN, no beyond Journeys end 🤮🤮🤮
That's not a headstone it's a milestone
I will follow you to the moon and back ❤❤❤
Did you get a haircut? Looks nice!
I must seriously recommend you rewatch this show for yourself, after you are done with the reaction series. You are missing a fair amount, because you are being distracted by making the show. Also, even if you paid perfect attention, this show only gets better when you watch it again. Every line is a set up for something in the future, and you will be amazed at the connections you spot the second, third, fourth, time through watching this series. This show is a masterpiece of storytelling art.
Himmel tryna fight that kid for the view 😂😂😂
Sheeeeessshhh... Never been this early 😂
7:17 Frieren is wondering why her chest is so small compared to Fern's, when they've been largely eating the same things. This anime does fan service very very subtly.
Am I the only one who noticed that Frieren found a spell to make grapes sour bc Eisen liked sour grapes?? 😭😭😭😭
Himmel is Him
I knew 2 girls in japan looks like you. Both are beautiful.
Short hair... 😭
Just kidding! It looks great! ☺️
Did someone tell you that Himmel mean sky?
