    About:
    Jason and Lorraine. In 2016 we sold most of our belongings and left the city in southern California to start a small homestead in the mountains of North Carolina. We left the city in search for a more minimal and intentional life. We became passionate about growing our own food and knowing what exactly is in our food after I (Jason) became diagnosed with cancer. Now 8 years in remission we as a family are on a journey to live our passions.
    We document our life on UA-cam videos to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and not be afraid of change. We started our own online general store where we have available the things we make and use in real life. Thank you for following us on this incredible life changing journey!

    Tx for sharing. Add some small gauge chicken wire on the bottom and it keeps rodents from coming up from below and netting can be used on top as well as electric fence around to save your produce.Blessings to the journey and good health for all

    Wow Jason! I just built 7 raised beds and I certainly didn't think about using outdoor wood glue! I'm going to put that idea in my back pocket and pull it out and use it for next time! Thanks!

    thats how my hubby builds ours. we live in gopher, vole territory so we line ours with cardboard and hardware cloth. he even designed them so we can make them taller too. I love them 👍

      we just made a 2-foot high bed and nailed 1/2 inch metal mesh to the bottom, then laid down cardboard from used boxes, then rotting trunks and branches to make a hugelkultur environment. There are definitely burrowing critters in our yard so this will at least fend them off a bit!

    I just completed two 3’x6’ raised beds with cedar fence boards (2 high) and grade stakes that I bought from a lumber liquidator. Minimal cuts and no leftover wood 😉 12 boards and 12 stakes made two beds. Only cost me $15!

      Last week we used reclaimed cedar fencing from a neighbor and made three 3’x12’ beds! We are using square foot gardening in those beds. These are all in addition to the 15’x25’ tilled garden, and a couple of other raised beds. Also purchased some 25 gallon grow bags. Hoping to grow a ton of food this year!

  • @margaretbedwell58
    @margaretbedwell58 4 роки тому

    They look really nice and will certainly make gardening on the hill so much better. You are talking space that just has to be mowed (with difficulty I'm sure) and turning it into productive space. Are leaving some place between the rising rows to walk to tend the beds? If so straw would make a good weed barrier and something clean to walk on. Have a Blessed day.

    As much rain as we have had here in Tennessee - We find ourselves going to raised beds as well and we've seen several different styles of raised beds - each one with their own little flare! Like you guys' idea! Making gardening easier definitely - especially for people who want a garden but have little space to make one! Awesome video and great job guys! Keep em' coming!

    2x4, 2x6 etc is what's called nominal size. It's accepted as being 2x4, 2x6 etc even though the actual measurement is short.

    have you ever thought about raised beds in the big garden ? its easier to keep your walkways and not having soil wash away with all the rain. you wouldn't have to keep redefining those hills every season.

    If you already own power tools this is probably the cheapest raised garden bed. If not there are special blocks you can buy from garden stores that allow you to make a raised bed without any tools. That's for those of you who literally are starting from scratch. But, honestly, I like the screwed-together boards much better, and they look nicer. Most peeps can borrow a skill saw.

    • @SowtheLand
      @SowtheLand  4 роки тому

      yes, you can also maybe get the hardware store to cut you these pieces to length. it's only 3 cuts. :) thanks!
