  • Historic first landing of a Boeing 757-200 passenger jet at St Helena Airport, and largest aircraft to date, when the Titan Airways flight touched down on Thu 30 July, 2020.
    This special repatriation charter flight from UK brought in 51 passengers, (including 7 from Ascension Island) and returned to the UK next day with 94 passengers.
    This video was taken over two days - the arrival on 30 July, then a series of training circuits on the airport the next morning.
    Special thanks to St Helena Airport for facilitating the making of this video.

    The 757, such beautiful aircraft. Absolutely love flying on these when possible. Almost had one last week (ATL to DTW) but Delta switched the flight to a 767-432 (ER) smokey Joe, still a lot of fun though. Got knocked around pretty good on the ascent, never worried a bit. Great to see Delta maintaining the vast majority of 57's still airworthy and a very respectable number of 67's as well.

I think the B757 is the perfect plane for St. Helena airport for tos landing, take off performance, payload and range. The load factor will be the main decision on this. Will keep watching.

    • @whatthesaintsdidnext

      Hey Jorge, it was unusually calm, normally the airport part of the island is quite windy. We mention in the blog post the average wind readings during the circuits was 7kts at either end of the runway and approx 15-20kts in the middle. Another charter flight is planned next month. Right now we are in our winter season and as I reply to you it is windy, cloudy and rainy right across the island, which is normal this time of year. It will be interesting to see what kind of conditions we have for next month's charter.

      Firstly, an incoming passenger on recent charter flight from UK, 24 March, who went into home quarantine, tested positive, but has since tested negative while still in quarantine.
      Second, a Spanish fishing vessel arrived on 25 March requesting medical assistance. Cases of Covid-19 were confirmed by SHG Health to be onboard. The vessel is currently in quarantine off St Helena, however, one person's condition worsened and had to be brought ashore for medical care and is now in Bradley's Camp's dedicated medical facility awaiting a medical evacuation flight.
      Currently it would seem the cases identified have been confined to controlled environments with no community spread, which we hope continues to remain so.

    I watched a documentary about this island a couple of years ago. Until the airport was built St. Helena Island was one of the most remote places on Earth. The only way to get there was by ship from South Africa that ran like once a month, if I remember correctly. The building of the airport was quite controversial for local islanders who were accustomed to their seclusion and way of life and feared that it would come to an end with the introduction of daily air flights. I wonder how most islanders feel now that the airport has been operating for a couple of years? Have things really changed a whole lot since its construction? Are the old ways still alive or are the comforts and conveniences of modernity infiltrating people's minds and way of living?

    It's nice to see a B757 operating there, great performer and good looking as hell. However, it came to my attention that the landing was a bit tight even with 1/4 of its full passenger load.
    It could be better if an airline acquires a B737-800 or A320 with the modifications used to operate at Rio de Janeiro's Santos Dumont airport. These special aircrafts have improved braking force to operate at similar extreme conditions (only a 1300m runway, steep aproach, hot and humid!)

      @whatthesaintsdidnext  4 роки тому +1

      The issues with wind shear at the airport were revealed in 2016 with the arrival of a 737-800, and the thinking seemed to come from that to use a different aircraft more suited to the local conditions.
      In the four years since it's been a slow process of acquiring more information about conditions and aircraft handling, and then trying other planes.
