Now I need to actually watch the show... ...and I was very, VERY happy that Falcon got selected to be Captain America. Of all the surviving people in the Avengers universe...Sam is the one I would follow into battle. He embodied, from the beginning and throughout his character arc, the 'good man' aspect that is core to the symbol. Not a perfect soldier...indeed.
Why Sam Wilson was chosen to become the next Captain America by Steve Rogers and why John Walker was never worthy of the title: Steve Rogers was a man who believed in something bigger than himself. He felt it was his duty to fight for others. "Whatever happens tomorrow, you must promise me one thing. That you will stay who you are. Not a perfect soldier, but a good man." -Abraham Erskine John Walker was a perfect soldier. He was highly decorated and hailed as a hero by the United States government. By all accounts, he was the perfect candidate for the next Captain America. But Walker had one thing that Steve never did: an ego. When he first gets the shield, he goes to his old high school and acts like a spoiled celebrity. When they dishonorably discharge him, he insists that "I *am* Captain America," to hell with all of you. Frankly, he acts like a toddler and Bucky and Sam are forced to break his arm and take the shield from him by force. Walker is a man with an agenda. An agenda that serves the United States government. That's exactly why Steve refused to sign the Sokovia Accords. He didn't want to be on any government's leash and felt the Avengers needed to stay an independent entity. "What if there's somewhere we need to go, and they won't let us?" -Steve Rogers The shield is a symbol. It means a lot to a lot of people, both in the MCU and our own reality. Walker acted as judge, jury, and executioner during his shortlived time as Captain America. He represented all of America's brutality. He represented the ego of the people in power and the military force behind them. He represented America's feeling that it is the world's police force when it's not. But Sam represents optimism and hope as Captain America. He refused to take the super soldier serum, that had the potential to give him enhanced stamina and strength. But it was also something that could corrupt him, as it did Karli and Walker ("absolute power corrupts absolutely"). Sam is just a man. A man with hope and a desire to make the world a better place. That's always been Captain America's struggle. "The only power I have is that I believe we can do better." -Sam Wilson America is a land of pride. It's a land of hope. It's a land that we love and defend, not because we have to, but because we want to. It's a land full of different religions, ideas, races, and beliefs. We have no national language, no monarch, no national religion, and it remains that way for a reason. The person who dons the Captain America mantle should embody the qualities this dream was founded on: Hope, optimism, and peace. Sam Wilson is worthy because when everyone else was telling him to move, he planted himself like a tree and said, "no, you move." He got Karli Morgenthau's message to the world peacefully. He honored the sacrifice and heroism of Isaiah Bradley. He stood up for what he believed in, regardless of the cacophony of voices telling him he'd never be accepted as Captain America.
This is beautiful and makes me realize why I disliked Walker so much thanks to the included Erskine quote. Captain America isn't about being the model soldier; it's all about being a good person at heart. This is why Sam makes a wonderful Cap; he's a good man with a heart that believes the world can be better, that we can all do better, and fights to be better and do better than what's happened in the past.
I served I hit a ruff patch and I hope I speak for all of us....there was men and women who wer there for me at that time....and the only color I saw was fucken green...I wish everyone could understand....we all in this bullshit together
