    Adolf Hitler was a pretty big heel draw in the late 30's/early 40's. He was a heat magnet and could cut a promo, but his work rate wasn't the best because he was all pilled up and insisted on being head booker in Germany, which wound up sending the whole promotion down the tubes.

    • @harrym6705
      @harrym6705 Рік тому +9

      Ran his promotion into the ground by promoting shows both East and west of his territory and stretched his talent too thin

      Adolf was over, but nowhere near as over as Franco. And Franco was a draw for far longer, especially with the latino market.

      This unironically sounds like the way Corny would tell that story 😂
      On that same note - I'd argue A.H. was THE most convincing promo there ever has been. He convinced hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people to join his stable and do his bidding, he barely did any of the work he's most known for (if any at all) by himself. It's a shame he decided to use his talents to do that absolute outlaw bullshit.

    The fact there has been exposés as early as the 30s, but wrestling still remained popular long afterwards, only exposes the myth that people believed it was all real up until the 80s. Maybe people really just like suspending their disbelief.

    • @Jim-Tuner
      @Jim-Tuner 6 років тому +13

      What happened in the 1930s was that many sports reporters and serious people stopped believing in it...or at least presenting it as a sport. The 1930s destoryed it as a true mainstream thing. It had its audience and the audience kept belief in it.
      There was a suspension of disbelief among some people who followed it. But there were also the hard-core true believers.

    • @MisterBeauJanGels
      @MisterBeauJanGels 6 років тому +4

      John Smith I think there's still a suspension of disbelief going on. During the only episode of Raw I've watched in years and years, I saw Roman Reigns make derogatory comments about Samoa Joe's heritage. Wait a minute, does this mean that the WWE believes that the public doesn't know that Roman Reigns is himself Samoan?

    • @dmospat
      @dmospat 6 років тому +3

      John Smith in the early years it looked more like graple shoots. the 70s we're when it started looking more fake. I don't know how anyone thought it was real with no black eyes and teeth getting bloody .

      Naw Lou Thesz got to train US military personal hand to hand combat in the 40's
      I don't think it became widely known it was a totally staged thing until TV allowed people to see it every week and altered the audience perspective from in crowd to threw a camera lens and of course the rise of the gimmick. I think in the pre-TV era most people thought all the big matches had guys taking dives betting against themselves etc....more a perception of corruption than one of its a totally staged competition you know "make sure you lose by 2 falls"
      You have to remember prior to TV most people only saw wrestling a handful of times a year unless they lived in NY,NY Chicago or some other major city.

    So that's what happened to wrestling in Chicago! When I was a small boy my mother , who was not a fan, tried to get us to stop watching wrestling on tv by telling us about the expose in the Tribune. She blamed Buddy Rodgers, later I concluded that couldn't be correct. Wrestling finally came back big time in the mid 70s I think it more or less bled over from Rockford. When Gagne and Bruiser shared Chicago they put on some great shows.

    I'd be curious to know when wrestling became a work? I originally thought it was during WWII due to lots of people out wither fighting in the war, or saving money. So I thought wrestling turning into a work was more entertaining, and would help jumpstart wrestling again. However I've heard that it was during the late 20's when wrestling became a work... But I'd like to know when?

    basketball, boxing, pro wrestling... they will evolve. If not him, then frankly someone else will do it. It's really the truth of life. The guy who invented the atomic bomb, he's so sad at what happened at Japan that he said that he's the Death, the Destroyer of Worlds, but the fact is, with many research at that time with regards to quantum physics, if it's not him, then another guy will simply create it. That's just how the world works.
