  • As legendary rock band Cold Chisel prepare for their 50th-anniversary tour, Australian Story looks back over the band's colourful history and examines why they have become such an essential part of Australian culture.
All four surviving members - Jimmy Barnes, Ian Moss, Don Walker and Phil Small - recount how the band rose from industry outsiders playing rough suburban pubs to arena-filling rock royalty.
The episode looks beyond the band's history to explore the enduring impact and appeal of their songs.
"The songs start as hits and then they become anthems," says journalist, writer and fan Trent Dalton. "And then, with time, they become sacred."

A large part of my life, I sobbed through most of this. I grew up on Cold Chisel. I’m a first generation Chisel fan going from pub to pub to see them live almost every night in the early days from The Sundowner at Punchbowl, The Cardiff Workers, Revesby Workers, Manly Vale, Carmen’s, Northies, The Maroubra Seals, Selinas, Coyotes with Wild friends no longer around through to Circus Animals, Last Stand, Light the Nitro and so it continues. My wild days thankfully I left behind me or I wouldn’t be here now. Best times, so much love and adoration for all of them. Best days of my life. Can’t wait for their 50th Reunion Tour in October 2024. Cold Chisel is the soundtrack to my life. And they’re all ours - Aussie rockers adored by Aussies ❤️❤️❤️❤️

From the first time I heard Khe Sanh at the age of 10 to today at the scary age of 57, I have listened to every note, lyric, guitar lick with my soul., not just my ears. There is no better band for me in Australia. Their song list is so varied and so structured that it never gets old. If this is yobbos music, Cold Chisel are the most intelligent, flexible, street smart musicians on the planet.

East was the first album I ever bought as a 15 year old in 1980. I still think it's their best album, although they had many great songs before and after. I played it to death and scratched it so bad that it jumps a few seconds into Standing On The Outside. Sadly, never seen them live, although I have seen Jimmy solo (not the same). I also clearly remember watching that Countdown / TV Week awards performance live on TV. I'd never seen anything like that before, but I knew where they were coming from.

Most bands that started in Adelaide between 1960 and 1980 went on to have considerable success because Adelaide audiences were very critical. The saying went if you can make it in Adelaide you can make it anywhere.

These British are not even born in Australia yet call themselves Australians. And there is nothing Australian about them. There was nothing Australian about the Bee Gees, and AC/DC.
Australian music was grossly underrated.....they were all let down by people like Countdown queer Molly Meldrum and TV Week and Bandstand, Brian Henderson.. In fact .. the removal of Briggs and Shorrock ruined LRB, indeed. They had no shame. It was great to be white and from Britain in Australia in the 1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s. The rest of Australia got left behind.

Jimmy Barnes and his alcholicism was the cause or their problems. Thewy would've been done better to get rid of him and kept Ian Moss as the singer. His drinking was a REAL problem ( Insider knowledge). I still hat him to this day. Don Walker is geat, Mossy too. As Ian has shown he can sell shows without them but I always thought Don was great.
