- I am going to show you the difference between Mod Podge and Jigsaw puzzle glue by Masterpiece.
Overall, I prefer Jigsaw Puzzle Glue because it comes with the applicator tool, and doesn't leave any brush strokes.

Thank you for your helpful demo. I have a few comments that might be helpful for anyone out there who is interested. I had never used mod podge before, but I have used puzzle glue. I decided to try the mod podge this time, and I was very happy with the results. First of all, regarding durability, I found it to be much better. It takes a lot more puzzle glue to get a sturdy finish than mod podge. Secondly, I purchased a styrophome brush to avoid the brush marks. I also got the matte finish mod podge instead of shiny. it did not leave any brush strokes at all! Lastly, I glued the puzzle on my kitchen floor without anything underneath. There was zero damage to the puzzle, and the glue wipes right off the floor. All in all, the mod podge is great!!
I was thinking of using the 3D ModPodge..
you didn't see brush marks with the puzzle glue....... Because you didn't use a brush!!
That's exactly what I was thinking!
Shame on you.
Matt Chaput lmao I was thinkin exactly this when i scrolled down and saw ur comment 😂
I know that if I were to go use Mod Podge, I would have also bought a brush to apply it. I'm glad she mentioned the brush strokes showing up because that tells me to use a different applicator.
Some things should just be implied; she doesn't need to spell everything out for you.
If it would make you feel better though, I'm sure you could PM her and tell her to make a video of her just saying "you could use a different application method for the Mod Podge in my last video," and it can be a personalized video just for you.
Whenever you're feeling agitated that she didn't mention to use the spatula tool, just pull up that video and you'll feel so much better. I promise.
Matt Chaput I was thinking the same
ok now apply the mod podge with the spatula
This is exactly what I came here to say😂👍? but appreciate the video. Just out of curiosity why not use the spatula on both? or recommend to use something similar if you dont have one.
This exactly what i thought and did to remedy the brush stroke issue. Also i like when or if it seeps through because it makes it easier to do the back side as suggested by mod podge. I this easy to separate it from the paper with the same spatula.
i use mod podge for a lot of crafts and for my cousins birthday this year i found a really adorable puzzle and glued it together using mod podge. with mod podge it is a sealer so it is very thin so it does go through the puzzle easier but if you put down a plastic table cloth the damage to the puzzle is so much less. plus to avoid stroke marks and not getting glue on your hands use a sponge brush instead. I hope this helps with mod podge users!
You can use wax paper or Parchment paper too and it will peal right off.
Thank you
I generally use foam brushes with Mod Podge and then you don't see the brush strokes.
You can apply the mod podge with the spatula and it will be "smooth and shiny". Also use baking paper underneath to prevent the damage. And knowing that mod podge is nothing but white school glue with water and fancy name you can just glue it with the school glue thus going even cheaper.
Thank you, very helpful video! !
Thank you so much! This video was a big help!
I use a applicator, like the one you used for the puzzle glue, with modge podge and it works the same. No brush strokes it sticks a little but that just like with any glue depends on how much you use.
You can apply the mod podge with the same tool you applied the puzzle glue and end up with the same results. If you put the puzzle glue on with a brush it would leave the same marks. Applicator is the clue.
For Modge Podge you mentioned it left brush strokes do you thing you could use a credit card to get the same method as the Puzzle Glue?
+Allyson Marie Yes you can! :)
My modgepodge(not for puzzles) dried white. Is there any way to lighten it or remove some?
Now try pulling the puzzles apart. Then you know EXACTLY what’s happening when it comes to how much glue soaks into the puzzle.
Also use squeegee on application of both products to be fair on half the puzzle, then on the other half of puzzle use brush on both products.
This would net you a real world comparison without bias. Then a person can see if it’s the tool or if it’s the product having better self leveling properties.
But what do I know? Obviously nothing otherwise I wouldn’t have watched this video! Lol.
Those puzzles are super thin so this is not a great example for most puzzles. But i did use the mod podge with the spatula.
Wouldn't using wax paper prevent any damage?
You can also use cheap school glue from the Dollar Store. Just water it down a tiny bit and it will do a great job. I suggest you also glue the backs of the puzzle AFTER you glue the front and allow that to dry. No weaping through and it holds better.
I didnt water down mine. Just ised a thin coat and an old credit card.
Also if you’re trying to send a puzzle that is 500 to 1000 pieces through the mail what is the best way to send it where it will not get crushed
Use an old credit card as an applicator if you don't have one. Won't leave those brush strokes with the mod podge.
Yup. next time use the applicator with the Mod Podge and the strokes will be a thing of the past....
If I want my puzzle to stick to a foam board backing will the seepage of the glue hold my puzzle on it with out me adding more glue to the back of the puzzle after it dries?
+redlabl Hi, I would add more glue to the back. It might hold for a little while, but the weight of it over time might cause the puzzle to detach.
+::Creativity Happens:: Thanks for your info girly. Thanks for responding to me {8-D)
I use a Plastic applicator with the MOD PODGE. And more glue going onto the underside, I see that as it is simply going deeper into the puzzle. Making it more secure, or GLUED. But that is just me.
I had no idea how to glue the puzzles! Therefore, yesterday I went to Michaels & purchased "Peel & Stick puzzle saver & also a frame. Now that I learn how to do it, how should I frame the glued puzzle? Should I put the puzzle in between glass & back cover?
Emma Yeganian it depends how thick your puzzle is. Ideally yes it will fit between the glass and back cover. Sometimes the puzzle is too thick and won’t fit between it!
@@CreativityHappens Thank you so much, I already did &gave some to my nephew who likes to play puzzles!!!
Has anyone tried using contact paper or package wrapping tape on the BACK of puzzles instead of messy glues? Just wondering.
There is a product like this that I saw posted on another site. Don't remember the name but if you google it, I'm sure it'll come up.
@@timjaquet9703 Buffalo games makes it! It's called puzzle presto.
I wonder if you used a scraper with the mod podge instead of a brush it may be different?
it would be.
thank you!~
hello there. I have a puzzle that glows in the dark if I was to glue it wouldn't ruin the glow-in-the-dark feature do you think?
+THE 1 & ONLY Hoo-Lan fan That is a very good question! I'm not sure to be honest! When I researched, most people said to glue the back of the puzzle so that it doesn't ruin the effect. Hope this helps!
Thank you. It helps quite a lot actually.
is it okay if you use the puzzle glue applicator tool or a credit card to spread the mod podge rather than a brush?
+Janine Marie Of course! Thank you for watching my video! Hope it helped!
You had brush stokes on the dried mod podge puzzle because you used a brush & you used a scraper on the puzzle glue.
Erm... just because a brush is supplied, it doesn't mean you need to use it! The difference of being able to see "brush strokes" is silly - that's comparing the method of applying the glue, not the glue itself.
do i use matte finish mod podge or gloss mod podge?
I used gloss. It’s up to you if you want it matte or to have a little sheen.
It depends on how you want it to look..either one will work...I'm gonna try the 3D ModPodge...
Just use the plastic applicator for either one. Or a credit card, or a cassette tape case. Or the side of a soda can, or any other smooth object.
Is it alright to use PVA glue on a puzzle?
+amanogirl1 Hi, I have no experience using PVA glue, so I wouldn't be comfortable giving you any advice on something I know nothing about. I'm sorry! I don't want to tell you one thing and then it ruins your puzzle! :(
Mike Zacharias Girl easiest way to solve this puzzle is to give it a go! I would put my money on it should work just fine as long as the PVA was fresh enough.
Do a third test with less expensive "white glue".
you have sturdy puzzles because that’s a smaller puzzle but the puzzles that my daughter does are 500 to 1000 pieces and we were told on UA-cam to use school glue because it’s cheaper but it doesn’t give you that sheen…
Isn't Mod Podge much less expensive than puzzle glue?
yes
Just buy some school glue from the dollar tree and paint it on both sides. Dries clear and doesnt cost an arm and leg. You can use one of those netspend cards they send in the mail all the time as a “squeegee”.
I just use my hand to spread it around works perfectly
Lorrain Cassesso then just lick your fingers off when done! Who doesn’t love some paste?
why not glue the back?
Try flipping puzzles that range from 1000 to 32000.
+Janelle Kim You can use a cookie sheet to help flip larger puzzles. Kind of like flipping a cake. Hope this helps!
+Olivier Lamarche You don't need to glue the back if you glue the front. If you glue just the back, the puzzle might warp because it's not a "protected" shiny coating on the puzzle, it's plain cardboard. You can try to put a cookie sheet on top of the puzzle to help it dry flat, but I've found more success gluing the front. Good luck!
You can get good Jigsaw puzzle glue at Dollar Tree for $1.25 (Canadian).
That's good to know! I haven't seen Jigsaw puzzle glue at my local dollar tree, maybe soon they'll carry it!
I would’ve thought it was common sense to put something protective under the puzzle to protect the surface and apply more than one coat so it could be really strong. That seemed kinda flimsy.
Quit using el-cheapo puzzles for demonstration!
She must have been a Hillary supporter.
Wow
This was super helpful! I'm about to glue and frame my first puzzle and your video really helped! Thanks!
Hi and thanks for the great video.
I used Mod Podge 'Matte' and a credit card for application. The result I got is amazing! I'd say it is as good as yours with the Masterpiece glue. A very good alternative if you're after a matte and virtually invisible finish. I'm framing mine so I didn't want it extra shiny as the glass will be shiny enough.
I know this comment is old but thank you so much for the tips! I recently got into framed puzzles and I was worried that I'd mess up with the mod podge, but applying it with an old Barnes and Noble's gift made it look amazing! So again thank you and have a Blessed day!
If you don't use the same method for application, it is not an accurate comparison.
Great tutorial! I'm glad I stumbled upon your video because I was wondering the same exact thing because I'd rather buy mod podge than a specific glue but wasn't sure. Thank you :)
A foam brush works with mod podge and wont leave brush strokes either. Often, brush strokes are visible due to the layer of mod podge being a bit thick, or if you brush over an area that has already begun drying and become tacky. That issue is totally fixable. The seepage through is interesting to see. Perhaps because mod podge is a bit more of a liquid consistancy than the jigsaw glue?
Thank you, I wanted some clarity on these glue.Nice art puzzle for kids room.
To get the Modge Podge even, I like to apply the layer then go over it with a old credit card to completely smooth it out. Pretty much how the applier tool works for the Jigsaw puzzle glue.
+Popcornio i would do that :O like the jigzaw glue method with the mod podge :P because i want to buy a gallon because im from mexico and buy two 5oz jigzaw glue for 10 dollars is too much to me and the gallon is on 26,, sounds ok right?
very good comparing video
I use mod podge with a sponge tip brush. It doesn't leave any strokes that way.
thank you ! the mod podge is easier to apply because you can use a brush (more control)i've used both and i prefer the mod podge
And also put wax paper underneath when you apply the glue and nothing will tear off the bottom of the puzzle.
awesome thank you...i wont how the mod podge would hold up on a glitter puzzle?? I have a fairy puzzle that has alot og glitter on it and i wont if it will still look nice and glittery...or will the modpodge take that glitter away....
Glue the back of the puzzle
If you used the spatula on both it would of been a better comparison. But I believe you would get the same result if you were to use the spatula with the mod podge as well. I prefer to use school glue (white or clear) slightly watered down. Same results as if I were to buy Mod Podge for $5+ & it only cost me $1.50 max.
Would you rather use the clear puzzle glue or mod podge for a 1,000 piece puzzle? I've heard you can see brush strokes with mod podge, so would it be best to use a card to spread it?
+sad7287 You can use a card to spread it and not see the brush strokes. However, I would make my decision based on the type of sheen that you want on your puzzle.
+::Creativity Happens:: there aren't brush strokes if you used a sponge.
I would suggest mod podge. it's cheaper and it does the same job. if you don't want brush strokes, don't use a brush. use a sponge or an flat applicator and you'll get the same result as the puzzle glue.
unless you want more shine use the puzzle glue
Hi. Have you tried using Elmer's glue in gluing down puzzles? Also, what's the title of the song you used in between your video? thanks
Hi,
The song is called "Simple," and it is from iMovie (the editing software that I use.) I haven't tried using Elmer's glue, but I've read on blogs that that is not a good thing to use. :)
::Creativity Happens:: thanks so much. I did try elmer's glue and you are right. the end product is not good. it has a matte finish and when it dries down, there are some parts where the glue peals off. do you have any recommended home made glue puzzles? ModPodge and Jigsaw Puzzle are not available in my country. :(
MuyMuy Diwa Hi, in researching, I came across this article. I have NOT tried these methods so I cannot say if they will work or not. I would definitely test them out on something other than your completed project! www.ehow.com/way_5507237_puzzle-glue-recipe.html
This is also a link to a recipe for homemade mod podge. Again I have NOT tried it myself so I cannot say for sure if they will produce good results. www.instructables.com/id/Create-Cheap-homemade-Modge-Podge/
By the way there are so many recipes online to make the same product so it will probably have to be a trial and error before you find one you like.
I hope this helps. Let me know if it turns out!
you are supposed to do both sides as well. thanks for the video. And don't pay attention to the haters on comparing brush vs applicator.. you were just using what came with the kit or was instructed. thank you for the video
WOW, it's harsh in the puzzle world.
Some people must've been exposed to the Vapors of the Glue. ha ha.
informative tutorial.
thank you
What type of mod podge
Why can't you use the applicator on the mod podge? I mean you don't have to use the brush and the result would be almost the same if you used the same tool.
Why didn't you use the applicator tool for the mod podge? I feel like its possible to avoid the brush lines if you used a strait edge like the applicator.
Hi duckafro,
I didn't use the Jigsaw puzzle glue applicator tool for the mod podge because if I had decided on using mod podge for my project, I wouldn't have purchased the puzzle glue, therefore I wouldn't have the applicator tool to use, if that makes sense. Thanks for the question and I hope I answered it! If not feel free to ask again. :)
+::Creativity Happens::
I understand what you are saying, however, you could've used a old credit card or gift card as an applicator. thanks for the vid
But I am sure you had an old credit card. Works just as well. I think you would be the same results with either material if you used the same tools to apply it.
if you had brushed both on or use the spatula tool on both it would have been a better comparison ( no reason u cant brush the "glue on" and no reason you can not "spread the mod podge on"
put the puzzle on Wax Paper, use the flat applicator for both.
So is it ok to use mod podge
Yes it is!
First of all,, Mod Podge does have a specific "PUZZLE SAVER" liquid! So why use Regular Mod Podge?
Why not use an applicator tool [or Palatte Knife] with the Mod Podge?
Had you used the brush on both, they BOTH would have had brush strokes.
Why not simply use an applicator tool on them both so there would be an equal balance?
OR why not use some kind of an Art Resin to preserve as an alternative.
Lastly, why not use a high MIL plastic under the product instead of a paper product? When using a good MIL plastic, nothing will stick to it, and can be reused over and over again.
I love the puzzle.I will buy Puzzle Glue and Mod Podge soon.:-):-DThat is very interesting.:-):-DWow!! I'm not sure wich look I want more.:-(:-)Hmmm!!
It looked the same I didn't see anything wrong with either
Maybe you should of used a foam brush
2:56 I had my phone at full volume and this scared me.
The best way to glue a puzzle is to turn it upside down and spray it
with SPRAY GLUE. Then you glue a thick paper on it and it's ready!
akylinaflute my puzzle is 2 sided tho......
You are supposed to put wax paper underneath the mod Podge and use a credit card🤦🏽♀️
Avery’s World i can’t find my credit card..... let me grab a pen & paper....... okay I’m ready, is it cool if I use yours? I just need name, #, exp, and the 3 digits on the back...... 🤪🤑
