As a former DTC employee at the namesake store, in Duluth- I’m SO happy to see this video and to not have to sell this garbage anymore. Many of their products do NOT hold up to what they’re “selling”
My $20 steel toe work boots that I got at Ross lasted me 4 years before I wore holes through the soles. I’d love to hear what you think about Brahma boots(p.s. I also stood next to my portable forge long enough to light my jeans on fire on accident and the cheapo boots took it fine, melted my shoelace though )
I think Brahma is one of those names with a large variety of quality because it is put on boots from [this factory in China] or sometimes [that factory in Thailand], etc.
Sorry but twenty to thirty dollars will never justify enough comfort for long wear. I can't imagine how they felt after a week. Without adding an insole for some more comfort I can guarantee you were suffering and just stopped caring after a while. Yeesh.
Hi!! I was wondering if you'd start doing some videos on women's boots. As a woman working in agriculture I need good boots, and really really struggle to find them. I have been told for many years to "just wear men's boots," which is a really bad option. I think this is a very underexplored area and would bring you a whole new audience too!
It would be awesome to see a review of hiking boots like Merrell, Columbia, or more expensive like La Sportiva. I have some Merrell Ontario's and they seem to fall for many of the sneaker boot problems and use cheap materials that most people don't mind because they are big name hiking boots and they just assume they are good. A far cry from my Thursdays
I used to get my undershirts/t-shirts from them, they switched the manufacturing from Vietnam to Honduras, and literally decreased the quality of every aspect of the shirt. They didn't say anything about a design change, but it's literally 2/3 of the weight of the old Vietnam manufactured shirts. I was so disappointed.
Always watch your videos with interest, even though I've no real enthusiasm for the subject. You somehow make it compelling. Plus, I love Toaster and would love to know what he's thinking when he looks at the camera.
5-6 years ago some family bought me some Duluth winter work boots. I concur with you, for the price paid, garbage boot on comfort, insulation, how long the water proofing lasted, and comfort. The sole for ice traction is likely the one redeeming quality. If I actually worked daily in them, rather than just for clearing the snow in my driveway, would have tossed them a long time ago.
I had a pair of Danner Cop Boots, lasted 6 years before the soles started separating from the leather boot. They were factory 2nds bought for $25.00 the pair.
Is there anyway you can do the "elk tracker" Irish Setters 880 hiking boots? Also, the smacking sound early in the video absolutely terrified my dog, he just about jumped to space😂😂
I know it's a hefty request, but I would love to see a tier list comparison of slip-on work boots offered by various name brands. You could do it similarly to the Moc-tober videos.
Excellent series! I'm glad I found your channel - I struggled with boots all my life until I put on a pair of Danner USMC RAT Jungle boots. I'm curious as hell to see what they're like on the inside - the New Old-Stock is going for $80 on Amazon! I'd love to see a video on them!
I love how youtube recommended the jungle boot video, great channel! Would love to watch a breakdown of Salomon boots/shoes, I wear them daily and couldn't be happier.
I bought the wedgestones for work (I’m a residential roofer and we go through shoes very quick) and they suck. I returned them after 2 days. Didn’t keep me dry in the rain, plastic welt is no good. The only good thing is that dual density outsole 🤌🏻 I love the vibram christy but I hate how quick it wears out on asphalt shingles. Too bad the thin embossed cheap leather upper is attached to it by a cheap plastic welt. Resolable my butt! I wish I could get that outsole on a quality boot.
I don't know about that fire test...as cool as it was would any shoe/boot come away from that still looking decent and completely wearable? I don't think so....
Regarding waterproof membranes, they are ALL really thin, simply because the thinner the membrane the more breathable the material all else being equal. And it is common for them to puncture due to bits of grit or debris getting into the boot. Then they get wet inside and the water stays inside as they dry out really slowly. This occurs whether they use Goretex, Event or the dozens of other brand name versions.
I have a pair of Duluth boots. They look similar to the Grindstones, but have Goretex and a thermal insulation layer, plus the puncture resistance, and a composite safety toe. Will they last? No. But I got them for $50 on clearance, and at that price, I think I did well.
Glad you're back with some boots. But I'm not so hot for that fire test, l got it- if it's fake it'll act differently than leather but c'mon.. Also the drop test is very wonkie I'd rather the shoe be firmly held down and not flop away, anyway it's only relevant for sport shoes and snickers l don't think it's important for work boots at all
I love your videos. I'm glad that you are experimenting with sound effects, but can you please have your voice louder than the sound effects and not at the same volume? With the rewind effect I couldn't hear what was being said, same with the slap effects, they were just too loud and makes the video look less professional and more novice which you are not. Also, for a video idea can you do a side by side of men's vs women's shoes. I'd love to see if there are corners cut in women's shoes since they seem to be more about fashion and less about quality in many price brackets. Men's shoes, in my experience, are more comfortable and better quality. It would be nice to see if that is actually the case though!
I would love to see you do a "were they ever good" with Duluth like you did with Nike. I have a pair of original grindstones from 5ish years ago that are as comfortable as sneakers and stood up to 10 hour days on a concrete warehouse floor, kicking pallets and boxes. Still look as good as the day I got them. Can't speak to their actual internal build quality but my feet, knees, and back never hurt. It is obvious that they have decided to focus on the fashion market recently and abandon their core tradesman. Everything is lightweight, breathable, flex fabric, and just feels "cheap" rather than the old super heavy and durable duck canvas, denim and flannels. Guess it doesn't matter if tradesman buy them or influencers as long as the registers ring.
Great video, this is a surprisingly entertaining channel, I went out and thrifted a pair of 40 - 60 year old Gold Bonds because of this channel. Maybe you know something about that brand? The internet is surprisingly vacant of info about those boots. One bit of constructive criticism though, please consider removing that fast forward sound effect during the leak test. Its pretty grating, especially 3 times in a row.
Having the ruler attached to the table during the drop test seems like it defeats the purpose since it's bouncing with the bar not giving accurate readings
LOL yeah...at least he always says that his experiments are not scientifically accurate in any way. I think he just tries stuff out and sees what happens.
Pretty sure aluminum melts at like 1200 deg f. that eyelet definitely wasn't aluminum, but it might have been Zinc which melts around 700 deg f. and zinc is super cheap and frequently used in cast parts as a cost saving measure.
I don't need work boots or sneakers but I like watching your videos regardless. I also use the leather knowledge to see whether a new purse is worth the money or not :P
The insole/footbed is what was claimed to be multi durometer not the midsole. Also, is it possible you never punch through the puncture proof layer just flexed it out of the way?
U think u can do the irish setters compared to red wings. Both sold by redwings. Both workboots. But different price ranges and is it worth the extra expense?
Duluth trading is designed for when the office staff comes on site. It’s give the appearance that they’re there to work, but we all know it’s just a look
Great video! Basically, A good quality long lasting work boot starts at around $275 ? I have the redwings king toe and have been wearing them for a year but now they're starting to get a little uncomfortable, Think I paid $240.
I've been wearing my $140 Timbs for about 5 years with no problems Had to have them repaired once after I eventually wore through the fabric but I asked the local cobbler for an all leather replacement counter and insole. They aren't waterproof or indestructible, but I think Timbs are the best value for looks and durability.
On the upside, I have a couple of their belts, which have been pretty solid. Their slip on work boots...meh for the $80 they cost. But I wasn't as savvy then as I am now.
I have a pair of Dunham boots I bought in 2004 & I've beat the hell out of them & they're still going. I don't wear them every day but they're my hunting boots & yard work boots & 18 years later they are still going. Of course I clean, condition, & waterproof them regularly. That's key, take care of your good boots.
Well it would imply that the shoe absorbed the energy, but I'm under the impression that you'd like the kinetic energy to be returned, rather than absorbed.
In Finland, we have a work shoe "Sievi" shoe, it is built as a work shoe. I've used it myself and I like it, it doesn't penetrate nails, it can withstand heat. perfect work shoes.
Weston, I believe what you call a "fake print" is actually what tumbled leather looks like after turning in a drum with small stones. Check into it. Best regards from a longtime subscriber.
@@mattjns You are referring to embossed corrected grain leather. Tumbled leather comes out of the drum with that distinctive grain from the small stones used in the process.
In the impact test it's like a car crash. You should remove variables. Hit the same spot on each, secure the not to keep it from testing. In some of the video footage the boot actually acted like a spring or twisted off the mount and absorbed more of the shock. Interesting that there was internal damage though.
Please do a video on Keens workline, curious if they're worth the $200+ price tag. The Cincinnati are toted as a hardcore boot. They've been comfortable the last 6 months with no real wear to the soles. The leather just nicks easily.
You know what would be interesting? Cutting a Daytona Road Star GTX boot in half. These are supposed to be the absolute best of the best motorcycle boots, hand made in Germany with the absolute best materials, and are priced as much.
Can you look at some of the sketchers steel toe shoes? I often see guys wearing them in the workplace, but are they a good cheap alternative to the traditional moc toe boot?
Heyo! I just wanted to say that while these boots are dogshit for manual labor, the Grindstone Light is pretty good for working Back-Of-House in fast food because they’re thick enough to prevent grease/hot stuff from hitting you, the non-slip actually works, they’re fairly comfortable if you replace the insoles, and the toe cover is durable enough for what you need in a kitchen without being super heavy. They’re also shitty enough that you don’t care if you ruin them (which you will, the grease will destroy any clothing or shoes you wear over time).
Awesome video! You tore those boots up! I wouldn’t give those away, just trash them straight out of the box. I wear three boots during the week, Timberland pros (worst out of the three), Ariat workhog (second best) and Danner Quarry. I’ve had the Danners the longest and I have definitely gotten my moneys worth out of them. Almost time to resolve them too. Keep up the good work, love these videos!
Sadly my Quarry’s leather ripped just above the arch when my foot slipped off a shovel and caught the edge of the step. Best for the money so far for have Thorogood for me.
Great video! I remember living in Germany in 2015 and seeing a waxed-canvas Duluth backpack at an “outdoors/nature/camping” market. I looked at it carefully, and was really impressed. Almost bought it there, but instead planned on getting one when I got back to the U.S. Then fast fwd to 2017… I was in Texas, and they opened up a Duluth Trading Co. between Dallas and Ft. Worth. Nearly everything in the store was cheap and shoddy, but priced like you’d expect if you were paying for quality. I left empty handed.
that's the impression I got too. My expectations were pretty high since I'm used to stand alone retailers in the US being high quality like ariat or the north face, but Duluth is just terrible.
I’d like to see a pair of Twisted X Oblique Toe boots cut in half. I bought a pair and used them for about 90 days before they started feeling unstable. The foam midsole seems to have become extra squishy/broken down. They do have a unique “shank” in them that is visible when you remove the insole. I bought them because of the uniquely shaped toe box, but it wasn’t worth it. If you want a pair of 90 day used ones, let me know because I’ll never wear them again.

Clicked so fast after the scathing title 🤣
I worked in the brick industry for 15 years, and the best I found by far was Timberland pro, A bit of movie trivia for you what was cool was seeing Jason Bourne wear them in the first movie
This comment is brought to you by Raid Shadow Legends. LOL! I get that they pay well for ads but there is no way I'll ever play that shite game. That game is the Duluth boot of video games. Great video as always! Love the new sound fx btw.
I'd love to hear of any of the brands reach out to you after these reviews. I've bought a lot of work clothes from Dukuth and if I had a problem, they were responsive. This looks more like some marketing and finance teams got together.
My Husband enjoys your channel - I enjoy Toaster. I am formally requesting more air time for Toaster. I hope he's the first thing you gather/collect prior to heading home.
Honestly, Thank You for the informative videos.
I work at red wing and would love to see you do some more of their work boots tbh to see how well they are made
As a former DTC employee at the namesake store, in Duluth- I’m SO happy to see this video and to not have to sell this garbage anymore.
Is that the puncture-resistant shoes? he also reviewed those
I think Brahma is one of those names with a large variety of quality because it is put on boots from [this factory in China] or sometimes [that factory in Thailand], etc.
Sorry but twenty to thirty dollars will never justify enough comfort for long wear. I can't imagine how they felt after a week. Without adding an insole for some more comfort I can guarantee you were suffering and just stopped caring after a while. Yeesh.
@@Kravachi ya you’re right
Brahma boots are lit ask my dead uncle still kept him alive, besides the drinking...
A mountaineering/hunting/hiking boot series would be awesome... Crispi, zamberlan, kenetrek, etc.
Use a shoe tree for the puncture test and secure the shoe/boot in a vise.
Hi!! I was wondering if you'd start doing some videos on women's boots. As a woman working in agriculture I need good boots, and really really struggle to find them.
I have been told for many years to "just wear men's boots," which is a really bad option.
I think this is a very underexplored area and would bring you a whole new audience too!
"Its like a kids work boot. A work boot for kids." Ouch. LOL
Good show. Love your honesty. Good to see Toaster as well.
Great video. For how expensive Duluth Trading is, you'd expect better quality. Makes me question their other products now.
Always watch your videos with interest, even though I've no real enthusiasm for the subject. You somehow make it compelling. Plus, I love Toaster and would love to know what he's thinking when he looks at the camera.
Please, make a review of ECCO sneakers or boots, I want to see them cut in half !
I love the honest reviews.
Great videos every time.
Why was there a random ad and video not synchronized?
Seems like the whole video is off.
Ever think about cutting apart the Alexander McQueen oversized sneakers? Great kids, the monarch video has me in stitches.
Are you going to do a review on the new Nicks WaterWork boots?
I had a pair of Danner Cop Boots, lasted 6 years before the soles started separating from the leather boot. They were factory 2nds bought for $25.00 the pair.
Amazing video, and i gotta say what a great looking mustache keep it growing brother.
Is there anyway you can do the "elk tracker" Irish Setters 880 hiking boots?
Also, the smacking sound early in the video absolutely terrified my dog, he just about jumped to space😂😂
I had no idea I would enjoy footwear dissection and learning about what quality is considered these days, I'm hooked!
keep up the great videos 🙂
I know it's a hefty request, but I would love to see a tier list comparison of slip-on work boots offered by various name brands. You could do it similarly to the Moc-tober videos.
Excellent series! I'm glad I found your channel - I struggled with boots all my life until I put on a pair of Danner USMC RAT Jungle boots.
I'm curious as hell to see what they're like on the inside - the New Old-Stock is going for $80 on Amazon!
I'd love to see a video on them!
I saw em! They're on sportsman guide too. They didn't have my size though.
I would be surprised if the eyelets were even aluminimum....a cheap eyelet might be a softer metal like say, a pressed zinc/tin alloy?
I have a pair of Duluth boots. They look similar to the Grindstones, but have Goretex and a thermal insulation layer, plus the puncture resistance, and a composite safety toe. Will they last? No. But I got them for $50 on clearance, and at that price, I think I did well.
Glad you're back with some boots. But I'm not so hot for that fire test, l got it- if it's fake it'll act differently than leather but c'mon.. Also the drop test is very wonkie I'd rather the shoe be firmly held down and not flop away, anyway it's only relevant for sport shoes and snickers l don't think it's important for work boots at all
So impressed with these videos. Keep up the good work
I love your videos.
Had to say it… your mustache is beautiful. Truly something all of us should strive for
I would love to see you do a "were they ever good" with Duluth like you did with Nike.
Great video. You mentioned Keen in this video and it would be great to see your reviews of Keen work boots.
The way these boots bend is hilarious 😂
You should do one on Adidas Terrex trail running shoes.
Having the ruler attached to the table during the drop test seems like it defeats the purpose since it's bouncing with the bar not giving accurate readings
Also the last boot didnt seem secured as well as the other 2.
LOL yeah...at least he always says that his experiments are not scientifically accurate in any way. I think he just tries stuff out and sees what happens.
Like to see a review of Ridgecut from TSC see if they are decent for the price point
Pretty sure aluminum melts at like 1200 deg f. that eyelet definitely wasn't aluminum, but it might have been Zinc which melts around 700 deg f. and zinc is super cheap and frequently used in cast parts as a cost saving measure.
This guy is God sent. Thank you for the Awesome reviews, they are always above and beyond anybody else's. 😎
The truth, this is why I love this channel!
RIP Dunham. I have a 3o year old pair that I still wear.
Wouldn’t the steel rod bouncing less mean that it absorbed the impact better?
Well it would imply that the shoe absorbed the energy, but I'm under the impression that you'd like the kinetic energy to be returned, rather than absorbed.
In Finland, we have a work shoe "Sievi" shoe, it is built as a work shoe. I've used it myself and I like it, it doesn't penetrate nails, it can withstand heat. perfect work shoes.
DTC has put the pedal to the metal on selling out
I think I would only add for your videos is please use metric units in brackets with your measurements/weights! Love your videos.
Boooo
Weston, I believe what you call a "fake print" is actually what tumbled leather looks like after turning in a drum with small stones. Check into it. Best regards from a longtime subscriber.
Nah I’m pretty sure that’s a fake print. He’s shown the process in a previous vid. A die is literally mechanically pressed onto the leather sheets.
@@mattjns You are referring to embossed corrected grain leather. Tumbled leather comes out of the drum with that distinctive grain from the small stones used in the process.
@@stevenroche9874 Yes, like the one in the video. 🤙🏼
@@mattjns You do not know that is true.
I, too, would love to see a series on motorcycle boots!
Here in Australia none of those would be allowed on a work sight as none have steel or composite toes
Can you look at some of the sketchers steel toe shoes? I often see guys wearing them in the workplace, but are they a good cheap alternative to the traditional moc toe boot?
It'd be really cool to see the Red Wing Supersole 2.0 get cut in half.
Awesome no nonsense review. Thank you!
The bag may have been Duluth Pack. Which is a completely different company.
@@Forgenorth13 Okay, didn’t know. Thanks for the clarification.
@@Forgenorth13 Then I will look for that backpack.
that's the impression I got too.
Such a good quality video, congrats, i love your channel
