I fumble a lot while speaking English. How can I overcome it?
If you’re fumbling, there are few things happening. One is that you are nervous and experiencing something like stage fear.
Someone is watching and listening you
There may be someone who speaks English better than you do.
Anybody would be nervous in this situation.
The other thing that is happening is that the words are not coming to your mind as quickly as you want to say them. When they do come, you aren’t sure of them, or they come in the wrong order. It is common, when you learn a new language, to speak it for a while using the patterns of your own language. This can lead to wrong sentence order, or using the wrong gender endings or other case endings, and so on.
Let’s look at the first problem. To some degree, you must simply accept that nervousness is part of the process of improving your speaking skills. eg - today u go inside the lift alone--
If you fight your nervousness, or tell yourself it’s wrong to be so nervous, you just make yourself more anxious. So accept that your nerves are natural. Accept that the other person could be unkind or have trouble understanding you. Someone who has ever learned another language has experienced this. Bear in mind that if you get an unkind response, the world is full of kinder people who would rather help you than make fun of you. Move on to the next person and try again.
The second problem can be approached in several ways-do as many of them as you can:
Practice-a lot. At home, with classmates, in front of a mirror. Practice out loud when you can, and review in your mind when you can’t.
Try to expand your vocabulary a little every day. Learn a new verb and how to conjugate it. Then make up sentences using your new vocabulary. If they are silly and memorable, you will find them easier to remember.
Make a special effort to learn “irregulars”-irregular nouns, irregular verbs. These are words that don’t follow the usual patterns for their part of speech. For instance, the plural of “child” isn’t “childs,” it’s “children.” The verb “to be” doesn’t conjugate “I be, you be, he bes,” but “I am, you are, he is.” You just have to memorize these, but there aren’t too many of them.
Find someone and set a “talk date.” Every day, every week, whatever works. This could be someone either better or worse at English than you, because if they can instruct you, they can help you move your skills closer to theirs; if they’re not as good as you, that will give you a chance to explain what you know, and you will understand it even better.
The most important thing is not to give up! Getting really good at a new language is HARD-there’s no denying it. But it’s a very gratifying achievement, and speaking English is a very useful skill.
