I don't think we should dismiss John altogether , he is stating the official US stance ; also don't underestimate China- China steals technology and has a terrible environmental records- Our disdain for big business should not blind us from the damage that China does - what we need is a balance for the world sake between the US and China - because if anyone of them goes down - there will be Chaos.
Evil USA they always say.. US in all there wars such as American Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the Gulf War, the Iraq War, and the War in Afghanistan.: 6-8 Millions Deaths. Just Mao: 40 to 70 million Deaths. True Empire of Evil. Bolton is right. There is something more important than economy. If we lose our liberty its not coming back. Then its social credit and you get rated. Just a number. The Death of Individualism.
You guys don't understand, Bolton is correct, he and his buddies do enjoy great economic security. What, maybe a few million of them? The Big Club. Essentially, Varoufakis sounds like a proper scholar possessed of a wonderful understanding of post-19th-century history, whereas Bolton sounds like a crank hellbent on war.
Bolton: We need to keep threatening people that we'll punch them in the face. Veroufakis: You've already punched certain groups of people in the face...repeatedly!!! Subsequently, people behave quite badly and dysfunctionally when you punch them in the face. Perhaps, we need to find a way where we stop punching people in the face. Otherwise, you're stuck in a never ending conflict where possible progress is awlays stifled. Unless you're a large stock holder in defense contractors or a compete duplicitous psychopath, I fail to see how your argument is in any way functional. That might be true but for China and Taiwan Bolton is still 100% correct. The USA (and the Soviet Union in the past) may have used their super power status to control others/be hegmonic but China has been a rising power that is doing that now and in many ways is much worse with no press freedom, increasing claims on other countries etc that make it more like "National Socialism" of German speakers in the 1930s than Bernie Sanders style socialism.

I gotta give to Bolton here, evading topics, calling names, attacking people, changing topics, and still have the decency to defend his "ideals" like he is actually convincing someone of something. He ain't talking to rhe intellectual part of the human, he's talking to attitudes or emotions of people. He thinks he is in FOX news or CNN, which is very understandable. Wow...all i gotta say.

I'd be entirely content for his ideas to be prosecuted and evicted from the US's political idea-space. The fact that professor Varoufakis has become as notable as he has is proof that capitalism as we know it is in its death throws. People are actively seeking alternative which scares the hell out of the corporate elites.
Capitalism is the best way to go. If you think is not is because you are looking at only communism, where it only benefits the elite. Capitalism benefits every one.

Being "notable" is a curious and lazy proxy to measure the merit of one's arguments. It’s a pretty low bar for “proof.” I’m not sure I would even call it “evidence”-perhaps “suggestion,” “indication,” or just “hint.” If two notable people disagree, how do you decide between them? Hopefully by the evidence, or if too complex, deferral to someone who has established their willingness to pore through the evidence. Or have you not pushed yourself enough in becoming informed to notice how much that happens? Such a proxy is a little like Trump measuring the value of someone's intellect or of their ideas by how much they're on TV, or of Bush basing his decision as to whether intel is merely bureaucratic CYA or desperately important on how sheepish and apologetic the message boy was who disturbed him during his vacation. I don't pick my religion based on which one is most popular in the city I grew up in. Do you? Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel, but populism gives it a run for its money. To Varoufakis's credit, he contrasts the quality of Marx's observations with the feebleness of his remedies. However, in his impressionistic way of speaking, he indulges in upvote-winning bashing of the most powerful country (for now; it's nothing new--Britain got the lion's share of criticism when its empire saw no sunset) in the same way Bolton is alleged by several commenters here to simplistically demonize the four main adversaries of NATO and the Pacific Rim. Bolton speaks of mutually beneficial trade what Varoufakis tries to frame as a zero-sum game. I'm having the same response to him as I did to Rush Limbaugh: buying one of his books to find out how careful his arguments really are.

I’m only 45 minutes in... but this is ridiculous. I am a conservative economist, and found Varoufakis’ summary of the economic history of the last 100 years to be fascinating: factual, illuminating, precise and perfect. I have never heard or read such an excellent, succinct account, anywhere. In just 10 minutes, he demonstrated his depth of understanding and complete mastery of what he discussed. For Bolton to immediately dismiss it as a “Marxist” interpretation is idiotic. Varoufakis might well be a Marxist, and I would love to spend an evening drinking with him arguing about incentives, property rights and a dozen other things about which I am sure we would disagree; but there is no way that his opening statement was Marxist. It was sheer brilliance.
He has explained before that he believes in the Marxist dialectic, it's observations about Capitalism and its conception of history. He is less interested in Marxism's hardcore economics.
Looks to me that you’ve never read Varoufakis’ own ‘The Global Minotaur.’ It’s basically a detailed, elaborated rendition of the 10 minute demonstration of his deep understanding of economic history he showed in this debate. You’d love it, I’m sure.
@@PsilentMusicUK I kind of wish he did go into it. He could really take Marxist economics to a new level with his ideas. It's just cold war ignorance to write off anything you don't like as Marxist. All Marx did was notice that after the French revolution capitalism was supposed to bring equity and peace and prosperity and he was hoping it would and when it didn't happen he had criticisms about the system. That's it.

(Theories from heterodox schools traditionally have a poor (and sometimes even inexistent) record when it comes to predictability.)
@@LuisRomeroLopez actually it is the consensus economics that has the worst record when it comes to predictability. The consensus is the consensus because it is the most politically palatable not because it has the best empirical evidence. If you have studied economics at an in depth level you will know that all of the schools have a mixed records on empirical evidence. The consensus schools focus on mathematical structure and solvability. Hence they come up with highly simplified yet still complicated mathematical models with terrible predictive accuracy. The heterodox schools focus on realism and complexity. Hence they propose complex models with no tractable mathematical form, from which they can only offer limited heuristic predictions.
@@georgesiew2758 > actually it is the consensus economics that has the worst record when it comes to predictability. Probably that's what followers of one or other heterodox school say, but focusing in social issues and dynamics might be a better description. (I think that even heterodox scholars like Kvangraven agree with this, but it has be mention that she seems to be so partial, that her definiton that doesn't consider austrian school as hetherodox) And probably that's why you see that many marxist are getting more into sociology that economy. (For me, Varoufakis seems to be more keynesian that marxist, but he kinda sound like one when he made an argument about happiness and existencial issues) > The consensus schools focus on mathematical structure and solvability. Half true, half false. You see: Austrians and marxist are the favorites of libertarians and (some) socialist respectively. The problem is that sometimes, one group seems to believe that economy reduces to microeconomics (you can guess wich one) while the other to macroeconomics. In a similar manner, the same group seems to forgot the mathematic aspect of economy while the other forgets about the human behavoir aspects. Going back to marxism and you commentary about who has the worst record on predictability... what do you think that one can seriously expect from a 150 year old theory that is pre neoclasical, pre marginalist, and has a simplified understanding of human behavoir? Thank you Holberg Prize for bringing this magnificent debate between two different visions. One representing the vision of a progressively declining empire with a its dominance …” you are either with us or against us”… and its determination to retain control if necessary by force, and the second view of a global citizen, presenting a vision based on social justice, elimination of poverty, respect to the natural environment and sustainable social development. Bolton is a far right political actor.. he worked for Trump for god sakes.. I love watching these types of videos and I think they clearly have a majority European audience. So I like to take a moment to say.. I’m an American and disagree with Bolton 1000s a day! Not all Americans think like him. He is not stating American views, he is stating neo-conservative views, hegemony without limits views, America or else views. That’s not my position. I think China is unfairly demonized in the west, and China is unfairly apologized for at times as well. I do think that China not being any type of Democracy at the executive level is something that is very concerning given how much power it has. America with all its problems has potential for moderation due to its beleaguered democracy, for now it’s still a democracy. Either way, the world will only survive if some version of coexistence and shared influence between superpowers of the world exists to solve the greatest challenges on our horizon, climate change and instability that Yannis talks about.

I'm glad we have people like Yanis trying to think strategically, even if for now he's a voice in the wilderness.
Curing diseases by exacerbating the cause, I believe is Bolton's way.
"War Hawk" Bolton is loud & clear. Its a failed approach because of conventional & nuclear weapons which China has plenty off.
Dont forget that Bolton is a "Washington Insider" as well as a "Neocon"...Sadly this provides him & others like him a protective blanklet against being prosecuted & put in prison.
@@akhalif68 There isn't a system to prosecute bad ideas, only specific war crimes. Look closely at Nuremberg to see how high the burden of proof is. And on top of that, of course being part of the US administration makes mention of Nuremberg irrelevant, but as it wouldn't fly anyway, why worry about it? I'd be entirely content for his ideas to be prosecuted and evicted from the US's political idea-space. I've never heard him give his worldview before, and now that I have I find it amazing that he was given such a privileged audience in so many administrations. There doesn't seem to be an intellectual center to his ideas at all, just threat & response.
@@jimbodriver1015 how so? I suspect most people posting here were drawn by Yanis's appearance, thus he gets the support of commenters. The fact that professor Varoufakis has become as notable as he has is proof that capitalism as we know it is in its death throws. People are actively seeking alternative which scares the hell out of the corporate elites.

I live in Norway, we sell oil. we find new oil fields all the time, we will have oil for at least the next 50 years, tell me a non capitalistic country that will be here in the next 50 years? Wakanda?

From what it looks like he just uses the current rules of economics and has very good remedies and adjustments that can and should be made within Capitalism. @bina nocht That works out pretty well for the selfish 'Haves' and the 'Have nots' they currently coerse.
It's just cold war ignorance to write off anything you don't like as Marxist. All Marx did was notice that after the French revolution capitalism was supposed to bring equity and peace and prosperity and he was hoping it would and when it didn't happen he had criticisms about the system. That's it.

> He doesn’t recognise a Marxist analysis? It was an economic analysis.
To be fair, there's a consensus in modern economics that marxist is an heterodox school of thought.

That's true, but not all of them are in the same level.
> The heterodox schools focus on realism and complexity.
(For me, Varoufakis seems to be more keynesian that marxist, but he kinda sound like one when he made an argument about happiness and existencial issues)
> The consensus schools focus on mathematical structure and solvability.
(Marx was a genius, but you will asking too much from him if you want his theory to hold to the standard used over 100 years after his time)
