- Sktchy is a fun social media app and a good way to find photo reference to draw and paint from. In this video I do a painting demo using a Sktchy image. I also use the new Winsor Newton Pro 100% cotton watercolor paper.

Logan's Barbershop! LOL!!! "When you paint a beard or beard hairs, don't draw every hair!" This is the best advice and falls in line with your previous advice about leaves, and painting leaves in clumps. This was a fantastic departure from your usual outdoor work and really great to watch how you handle a portrait. The process was spot on, and the end result was dynamite! Boy, I re-watched the beginning of the painting and flashed forward to the end, again, just to compare. For many of us, it's easy to steer into the left lane of "caricature" when it comes to portraits, but you took a very confident drift into the right lane of developing the portrait with great care and precision. I really like this a lot, Steve! Sorry, don't mean to double dip the compliments. lol! :)

Great! More portraits please, this was very helpful. I’ve bought the same paper, elephant sketch done but not coloured yet. The annoying thing is it’s 5x7 but not to the perforations, I have a couple of 5*7 frames. Looking forward to adding paint after your comments.

Lets face it, you are too much fun. (Intro). This is so special......when I first saw it I thought surely he was a family member or something. I’m sure you already know but Wet Paint has this paper on sale this weekend. I need to check out this website for sketching. All too many times I have tried to do a portrait of my Dad but always blow it. Your hints sound like they would really help. Guess I also need to look at him as a stranger and look at him using your key points. Thanks for the video.

I am no expert and I am learning from UA-cam videos. I love your tutorials!...but i must be learning something and would like to refer to the cap in the painting...perhaps a subtle orange blended in would have taken away the harsh finish on the edge of the cap. I am not criticising and I couldn't produce this standard but by pointing out means I am learning ! Brilliant tutorial!

I'd love all of those Andrew Loomis books! Winsor Newton spiral pad reminds of Bee Journals so I wondered if you tried these and how they compare. Bee offers more paper, is 100% cotton, and is affordable. They are both in spiral pads and have perforations but quality is important. My quill fetish made me race to look at the DaVinci Casaneo #2 but I had to rein myself in after Amazon raised price a whopping $7 in one day. So far I have DaVinci Petit Gris #3/0 and #3, a Princeton Neptune #4, and one precious Isabey #6 found at deep discount for $27.99, but no #2's. I'll be keeping an eye out for a deal on the Casaneo #2 to round out my quills because it looks nice and you know... quills have become my thing! Love how they look and feel.

This was the perfect portrait video for me. I need to work on "loose" coloring there.... not so many details, and I tend to overwork. This will help me so much in practicing and learning. What kind of sketching pencil did you use? Did not see it in product list, and I really need a better one.

Steve, kudos! Great job. Enjoyed the video so much. I was getting nervous of the shadows of the eyes and nose, but ultimately you made the painting work. Great resemblance. I bet the guy would know his own face in this portrait. And I love the looseness of it. All around well done. I have this WN pad and I need to go back to it after watching this. I love your work, Steve. I want to call you "Stevie" in honor of my deceased little brother. But I won't. Don't worry, this is not a sick fatal attraction... oh, but maybe with Reese.

Ah, yeah I get that request on occasion. I don't do that because unfortunately its not very effective. Watercolors look extremely dark in the pan so you woudn't be able to tell and my mixes get very complex so I can't simply say the color. I'm never pulling paint straight from the pan to the face. I just need to do a video on how I paint flesh. Here's what I'm using for this face (from the Schmincke colors in my list). Mainly a base of Mahogany Brown and/or Ruby Red. I'll push it to the yellow side with Indian Yellow and to the cool side with the Blue Violet or Deft Blue. I will mute any of this with Graphite Gray or Green Umber.

Fair enough. One of the first thing that beginners need to see is how painters handle brush, water and paint.

Watching you work is such a privilege Steve! I for one love to see you working on portraits. It helps me see things more clearly since I have always been a bit afraid of them. I'm also obsessed with the size of that three row palette! It looks like the perfect size... the 12 half pan sets often don't have quite enough room to mix and the 24 palettes are a bit too big to travel with comfortably. Any tips on where to find just the tin?
Hey Denise. Thanks for the encouraging comments! Portraits can definitely be scary. When something is off, we, as humans, can tell right away. Even non artists. I was terrible at them. I only wanted to paint landscapes back in the day because they seemed the most exciting to me but when I became a full time designer/illustrator (I won't say how long ago that was), I spent a couple years just drawing faces and facial structures and filled a sketchbook or two with them. I discovered a new found joy. You've probably done similar things for wildlife and animals. I've not seen this particular 18 pan tin without paint. Its probably available somewhere. I've only ever seen it with Schmincke paints in it. The third row is usually empty, which I loved because I could round out the selection with my own choices.
I completely agree! It was the same with big cats for me. They're so beloved and symmetrical that if something is off, anyone can see it immediately. I finally have gained confidence with them, so perhaps it's time to brave portraits again :) as for the palette, I found a listing for a couple of them (meaning the Schmincke sets) on Amazon and in a moment of weakness I snatched one. I did tell myself though that the trade off is I have to let something else go haha 🤔

Thanks for doing portraits! I find portraits difficult in, skin soft edges, natural colors and tones. I have difficulty with resemblence.
Resemblance and achieving a likeness is one of the hardest things to accomplish in portrait painting.

Between you & Marty, I'm just stocking up on journals... lol 😆 Trying to find the best one for me. But after this one I gotta be good & fill a couple up before buying any more. How did you feel the w& n paper compared to arches? Also, I haven't picked it up yet, but how does this paper compare to the Kilimanjaro journal? I noticed that the w&n 9x12 block actually cost a little bit more than the arches. I hope you are doing well my friend! 🤗
Hey Val, thanks! I didn't know that about Sktchy. Bummer indeed. I loved the paper. It was very similar to Kilimanjaro. All the new papers are getting so good its difficult to tell what is better. This had nice lifting properties. I haven't tested all aspects so not sure. Arches will always be Arches and a paper I can count on. Can't say the same yet for the others.

In general what looks best for portraits, hot press or cold press? I was thinking hot press, but this is beautiful! I want to send a surprise gift to my daughter. (At this point she says she doesn’t have a preference.)
I don't think one looks better than another. It's more preference of what you like to paint on.

I do, but don't get to do so often at all. Hard to find anyone who will sit for you unless you're part of a live painting group.
question (off topic) Are full sized and half sized pan interchangeable between brands or are they all different?
They are standard with a few brand exceptions like Mission Gold’s pans.
thanks I bought a little travel palette but it but it only holds 12 half pans. I want to switch them out with ones that suit my needs. Where can I find some?

Hello Steve , Could you help me 😊 Its my birthday on 20th April and I can have a real BIGGY anything present in art materials that I wish for, however; I have a lot of paper and brushes and professional paints (I love my art tools) and cannot make up my mind which BIGGY I should choose. So can you help me out, which should I go for, real good cotton paper, the best brush or tin of the best paints?.... Appreciate your help my friend. It would be paper for me. The paper makes more difference than anything. That said, if you already have some great paper I would go for a special brush next. But then new paints are always cool too. Oh, I see what you mean. Hard to pick.

thank you for the response. I thought I miss it. Since they are so lightly drawn I guess you don't have to. I really enjoy your videos. I just discovered you tube as a learning place. (where have I been?) And your channel is great. I am primarily a sculptor, but sketch everyday and try to quick study paint most days.
Right. I used an H lead and kept it extremely light so there was no need to erase. Even so I don't mind a bit of pencil showing.

Hearing you talk about making a portrait in watercolour made me want to do it ... I stopped your video and started painting your portrait! OK, it hasn't become a real likeness, but a resemblance as you said. Because I painted first and then went on watching the video ... I didn't follow your advices. Maybe next time ;-)
