I hope this doesn't come off as harsh, but what western notes do those translate as. I'm a young American musician and I like sitars, but can't figure out quite what the tuning is, or how to get one. I hope to hear back, I loved your sitar by the way, and I hope one day to have one to make music with. Thanks for hearing me out.
Thanks for the question we appreciate it. No offence taken either! Unfortunately this video is one our much olders filmed out in India and we are no longer working with the sitar expert. Shaso 1008 You can tune the SA string to anything between a B and a D. It depends on which note that sounds best on your particular instrument. First string "MA" is the fourth note from the SA. So if you tune your SA to a C then MA is a F.
I am Arun, I need to know what type of strings fit in which location, few are steel, brass or copper, different thickness., I have brought sitar ellora strings pack online, it shows 1,2,3,4,5 etc on pack numbers, I am confused which one goes which location if you can please explain that will be a great help. Thank you for lessons, I am learning basic from your video.
+arun Kumar A sitar has two pegs on the top and five on the inner side of the stem which are of a bigger size alongwith thirteen smaller pegs. String no.1 (steel) should be fixed to the top peg on the inside of the stem and wound anticlockwise. No.2 (copper or brass) to be fixed to the top peg on the outer side wound clockwise. No.3 (copper or brass) to be fixed on the first side-peg towards the outer side of the stem. No.4 (copper or brass) to be fixed on the second side-peg. No.5 (steel) to be fixed to the third sidepeg. No.6&7 (steel) to be fixed on the the fourth and fifth side-pegs. The sympathetic strings are to be fixed on the small pegs. See this video carefully a few times and you will get an idea of the position of the major strings which would numbered 1 to 7.
Tune the 2nd string to D. That will be your mandra Sa. Now tune the 1st string to mandra ma, 3rd string to ati mandra Pa, 4th to ati mandra Sa, 5th to mandra Pa, 6th to madhya Sa and 7th to tara Sa
