    I imagine deciding to do full blown weathering like this is a turning point for going from a good painter to a great painter... The thought of having a pretty much perfectly painted mini, to then "ruin" it by purposefully making it not look perfect is a scary one xD

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  3 роки тому +3

      I admit that's a scary stage! In the first part you give up a good part of the control you have on the paint job looking for happy accidents from the natural physical behaviour of the paint. Then you have to regain full control adjusting every detail!

I still struggle so much on my last steps of volume definition, where to place edge highlights, which to do, which to ignore, what colors to use, i always end up half too bright and half too dark, and none of the colors feel completely right for the highlight. i could spend a week at a texture/final highlighting class.

    The model looks fantastic, awesome work dude! I really love the difference in finish being part of the overall contrast to the model.
    You mentioned AK's heavy body metal acrylics and I have to recommend their True Metallic line. It's a wax based paint that can be buffed to a high shine. It can be painted on thick too and create amazing texture, like impasto techniques. It interacts with enamels and oils great, blending weathering effects into the metal really well. I guess cause it sort of is an oil paint, just contains less saturated fats making the oil solid at room temp instead of liquid. Cold wax paints are a whole rabbit hole to jump down which I think you'd find fascinating if you haven't already seen it. The pigment is not as fine as Alclad but perhaps a little finer than Vallejo Metal Colour. VMC and True Metal are my go tos for nearly everything I do.

    Finally a video on tmm black! Love it. Although correct me if I'm wrong, while I found your underpainting really helpful to understand the concept you wanted to follow in this paintjob, I really struggle to see that yellow to blue gradient of light in the final pictures. Maybe it's just the camera, but if the "only" thing you get from that is a slightly more interesting black that gets overpowered by all the weathering and osl in the end anyways, what's even the point of that elaborate under paint?

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  3 роки тому +1

      Well, if you think about it this is a more logical layering of events; highlights are the highest lights of and even weathering should have that kind of modulation to render the sensation of the volumes underneath (otherwise it just tones down everything killing every contrast). External lights and OSL even in real life are the last thing hitting an object and they envelope everything in their colour: basic material, textures, dust and grime... They are all UNDER the light! (Light don't get dusty 😅)

      Might have to be the fact that we see it on video and not real life.. But from what i can see, all the paint coverage just made those layers completely dissapear :/, or my eye is just not trained enough yet.

    • @p_serdiuk
      @p_serdiuk 3 роки тому

      I think it modulated the black and made it less boring in the end, but because of its glossiness it's very hard to see on the camera as it can't capture the whole dynamic range between bright bouncing lights and subtle variations in the very dark black.

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  3 роки тому +5

      Sadly the video/camera can't really get the visual complexity of that layering and what gives you in person especially when you actively move the model in your hands, but everything is still there!

    First may I say what a massively talented artist you are.
    I found your channel while looking for a review of scale 75 artist paint and have become hooked. The Zorn pallet got me thinking about my own modelling which is generally 35th scale armour with the odd figure, so much so that I brought your recommended colours along with a few others. along with watching your colour theory videos. Bravo, Marco! I really like the technique of applying ink as a filter over metallic paint (I got some duraluminium after seeing you use it in a previous video, and have fallen in love with it), but I am having a little trouble getting the right consistency for the ink when applying it with a brush (I don't have an airbrush). Do you have any tips for how to thin the ink, or is it just a case of adding the right amount of water and practising until I get it right?

  • @ogrokun
    @ogrokun 3 роки тому +5

    Another question: you applied transparent inks directly to the metal to create the light from the scene, but I could not see any of the light effects you created after the black paint.
