I saw Ian Brown live at a festival he came on said all the other bands were shit. Implied I should be grateful for his presence. He then went on to do the worst set I’ve ever seen.
Went to one of the Stone Roses' comeback gigs at Finsbury Park about 10 years ago. The band was great and you couldn't hear Ian Brown singing over the crowd. It was great. 10/10
I rented a room in a house some years ago. My live in landlord told me that in the 80s he was studying computing at a university in wales. He was in the SU bar one evening and a guy walked in sat down next to him and started drinking with him. My landlord asked who he was. The random guy said he was a singer and his band were supposed to play the SU that night, but no one turned up so the gig was cancelled and he was just going to drink instead. My landlord was not into or familiar with the music scene at the time. He drank till the early hours with the random bloke in the SU bar. They had a good time, talked about life and stuff. Years later my landlord said he was watching top of the pops and the guy he drank with in the SU bar was on stage singing with the stone roses. It was ian brown lol. My landlord was black and said that there was alot of racial tension at that university in the 80s. He said he would walk into the SU bar and everyone would stare at him and give him dirty looks, so he would be drinking on his own in some dark corner of the bar. Ian walked in that day and was the only one who sat next to the black guy in the bar and drank with him. Ian Brown may be a legendary musician, but he is also a legendary human being.

My buddy and I went and had a brilliant time. So a few years later I see that he is again returning to our local venue as a solo act and I immediately called my friend. Granted the tickets to this gig were obscenely expensive ...I think they were $80 ... but we remembered how good the previous show was so we didn't bat an eye at the cost. Doors were at 7:30 no supporting act and the show started at 9:00 sharp. We arrive at exactly 7:30 grab a drink and scope out our seats. Not as good as the previous show but it isn't a huge venue so we're not bothered. We chat, we sip our drinks and we reminisce over the last show in anticipation of another brilliant evening! 9:00 sharp the house lights go out and as the curtains slowly open music starts to play and the stage lights come up on a completely empty stage. No wait there is a single microphone stand center stage with a guitar chord hanging off of it. Lindsey Buckingham walks on stage snaps his guitar cable into his guitar and begins to play and sing along with the backing track. I can't tell if he is really playing because I heard guitar before he plugged in and I certainly don't hear MORE guitar now that he is in fact ... plugged in. There is a guitar solo and I'm pretty sure he played it. And of course he is singing ... no question about that. He's very brief between songs ... not so much as even a "It's great to be back to the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom!" or anything. He plays a few hits ... because he's got some. He shades his brow and salutes us, says "Thank you very much!" unplugs his guitar and walks off stage. I look at my phone 9:40. I turn to my friend and smile and say "Surely this is an intermission! He'll be back!" people are still clapping and I halfheartedly say "Maybe he will play a 30 minute encore?" The house lights come back up. I hopefully look towards the bar thinking we could get another drink during intermission but all the bars around the venue are dark, closed ... I glance towards the exit doors and they are illuminated and all wide open. Finally the house announcements come up thanking us for coming out and inviting us back for another great show at the historic Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom! 😳 The Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom's capacity is 2,200 x $80 = $176,000 ... that means Lindsay Buckingham makes $4,400 a minute! There were no LED lights on the stage and I assume the house set up the mic stand. Who knows Lindsey himself probably hit play on the cassette deck back stage before waltzing on to sing along with his "Greatest Hits!" So I don't think he had a road manager or any tech crew with him for support ... so I'm sure he made all the money. Lindsey Buckingham makes Ian Brown seem like the hardest working bloke in Rock and Roll! 😂

My mate went (a big Roses fan) and said it was THE worst gig he has ever been to. I love the Roses and have seen IB solo a few times- he's never been able to sing live, but it was always somewhat saved by having a decent band behind him. Fells kinda like he's fleecing the fans
@@Hoscitt see, I went to see them twice on the reunion cash in, both times the weak link was the frontman (as always) but the sum was greater the parts, for me at least.
Slightly random: I saw Ian Brown in the Natural History Museum many years ago. He got annoyed because I kept stage whispering to my mate " that's Ian Brown". Btw, he wasn't an exhibit.
In the 90s I did some gigs with just me , a drum machine , a guitar and an old poly61 with the arp switched on , nobody clapped at all , somebody shouted where’s the drummer
I was at his gig in Manchester, although fun I was missing the band! Edit. Luckily I have seen him with a band, and it was awesome, but for some, it was their first time seeing him, and felt sad for them!
Another great video, thanks for the laugh, I needed it. Totally unrelated to this, my 12 year old has been a pain in the bottom this evening so I've taken away his pocket money and given it to you. Don't spend it all on sweets.
But Ian Brown can do want ever he wants. No one seems to grasp this. He can charge a grand a ticket and its absolutely fine. A genius has this right. Not many of them around you know.
What a performance. He should get DJ Khalid to play guitar for him. What a duo they would make, though he’d have to also replace the existing laptop guy to fit in the Robin Reliant. Keep up the good work Mr Hawkins, you never fail to make me laugh x
Another great video, thanks for the content and this one really made me laugh. Personally I think this gig, if attended with the right group of friends, would make for a more memorable night than if there were a band. Also, it is possible this is all a health and safety precaution. The addition of a band members and instruments would severely impact the Reliant's cornering whilst simultaneously breaking UK traffic law.
I’ve given up my ticket for the London gig this week. What’s criminal, is that his solo bands of the past, with Aziz Ibrahim, were brilliant. Worth the money on their own.
9:29 Don't feel sorry for us audience - I saw him in Manchester knowing it would be with a backing track and he smashed it. (However the Reliant Robbin with Ian Brown sings the hits on the side is a good idea at least for one leg of the tour.) The thing to understand about Ian is what I realised after seeing him do this - it's its all about him, his solo work is about him, it is about the music too because he wrote the music he performed at these gigs, not the Stone Roses or a backing band, he wrote it so can perform it however he wants. Perhaps it is also a kind of psychological reaction to have tried again with reforming the Roses and realising he just doesn't need or want to be with a band again at the moment.
I went to the Ian Brown gig Nottingham, 6th October 2022, not expecting much after the reviews in the press. It was one of the best gigs I've been to in years!! Never trust reviews in the press, a bad review gets them much more attention then an honest review!!!!

We saw him in Nottingham a few days ago, one of the best gigs ever!! 40 quid is nothing for a gig in this day and age, Ian Brown was amazing and a crap camera video does not catch the true sound and energy, not to mention his interactions with fans. The guy is a true legend.

Do you think it's possible for bands to avoid becoming formulaic? Bands like Radiohead have managed to constantly evolve in terms of each album. But we've not heard from them for 6 years. Foo Fighters it could be argued became formulaic. Is it part of a long-standing bands identity? Does it even matter, if they are having fun and the fans are having fun? Cheers for this vid. I'm not well at the minute and this made me laugh, especially the calculation of profit. I've got an image stuck in my head now of Ian Brown sat in my local Nandos
PJ Harvey, supporting U2 in the early to mid nineties at Hampden. She burnt through 2 amps, stropped out, left the stage in a huff, amazing worth the entry fee on its own. Ian Broon has nae vibe.
Ian Brown live has been a dodgy proposition for decades. Ian's solo albums are heavily Hip-Hop influenced & it makes sense that he sees himself as a 🎤 + multimedia performer - problem is, no one else does. Nice tee 🔥🙏Cult Army🙏🔥
I've seen plenty of Hip-Hop gigs with fake DJs and one with a fake MF Doom. Nobody massively cares, it's just what you get. Brown's solo stuff could lend itself to this this type of performance. He's written and produced the backing tracks, and nobody is asking for refunds for the Sleaford Mods. It could work. Something is missing in the execution but the idea isn't as bad as people made out.
I'm a Stone Roses fan but your commentary had me laughing so hard Justin. 😂 Really looking forward to your gig at the Power Station in Auckland, NZ on the 22nd October. 🤩 x
I saw him years ago at Glastonbury, Sunday night, the Other Stage, Headliner no less. The Roses had broken up but he had a pretty handy band with him. I was tired after a very entertaining few days. I was slumped in a camping chair when a "Manc" in a silly hat came up behind me and kicked me in the back exhorting me to "get up and fuckin' dance man. Its Ian Brown man!". He was right, it was Ian Brown. I could tell because he couldn't really sing very well.

I saw him once at V festival, he was chronic, then I saw him with the stone roses at heaton park and I thought it was great…………he obviously needs a band.
Ian Brown can do what he wants. He's one of the most charismatic frontmen of all time. Liam Gallagher, Tim Burgess, Richard Ashcroft etc all followed his lead.
Imagine being in the Darkness of all bands and criticising the lead singer of one of the most important British bands of all time. Regardless of what you think of him he's a far better song writer than you'll ever be.
I'm a huge fan of the Roses and Ian Brown, but I'd never go and see Brown himself live. He writes great songs, and he makes it work in the studio, but everyone knows he can't sing live to save his life.
So people can rip off artists paintings with a few descriptive words at a computer but this guy is being criticized for singing to the songs he wrote in a real setting, surrounded by real people?
Met Ian many years ago before a gig. He was really polite/genuine.

to make him look cool? To make more money more like. He's a legend but personally I would rather have a live band there.
My mate went (a big Roses fan) and said it was THE worst gig he has ever been to. I love the Roses and have seen IB solo a few times- he's never been able to sing live, but it was always somewhat saved by having a decent band behind him. Fells kinda like he's fleecing the fans
I accidentally ended up at a Stone Roses reunion gig back in the day and it's still to this day the worst gig I've been to. They were AWFUL!
@@Hoscitt see, I went to see them twice on the reunion cash in, both times the weak link was the frontman (as always) but the sum was greater the parts, for me at least.
I went to both nights at their Ethiad gigs, fucking shit. They clearly couldn’t be arsed being there, they were even cutting down intros to songs lol
Idk this band, but for a 60 year old man. He isn't bad at all!
@@Hoscitt Ian Brown may have been shit but John Squire awful, really? The guy is a guitar god.
I've never once bought a ticket to see "Ian Browns Band'.
Slightly random: I saw Ian Brown in the Natural History Museum many years ago. He got annoyed because I kept stage whispering to my mate " that's Ian Brown". Btw, he wasn't an exhibit.
I remember watching your videos on MTV when I was younger. Amazing stuff friend. Your voice is insanely awesome

An evening with Ian Brown and his karaoke machine! 🤣🤣😅😂
Hey he always sung “I wanna be a door!” Now he’s as close to being a door as he can be.
Yep, he's a doorknob now😂
Thank you! A bit like "Lidl buy Lidl" 🤣
I wanna be a dog, terrible bark he has. Maybe he's had too much Chappie.

Justin, great show, what are these LED straps you speak of🤔
In the 90s I did some gigs with just me , a drum machine , a guitar and an old poly61 with the arp switched on , nobody clapped at all , somebody shouted where’s the drummer
I love and respect this
Great comment, Trent!
@@SmallerLives shit , you got me

I like to think that it's John Squire hidden away behind the stage operating the music on a laptop.
Almost fell out my chair laughing on this one!
This is incredible sarcastic comedy. 😂😂
Pishing myself. My favourite video on the channel.
Thanks Rob. Condolences to your 12 year old.
You should do an air guitar version at your next solo gig
But Ian Brown can do want ever he wants. No one seems to grasp this. He can charge a grand a ticket and its absolutely fine. A genius has this right. Not many of them around you know.
Love how Justin can’t hide his contempt for Ian Brown 👌😂
What a performance. He should get DJ Khalid to play guitar for him. What a duo they would make, though he’d have to also replace the existing laptop guy to fit in the Robin Reliant.
Keep up the good work Mr Hawkins, you never fail to make me laugh x
Don’t forget to add the cost of the air guitar and air plectrum for the pick slide. 😂
Haha, thank you!

First of all you were exceptionally fabulous at Taylor’s tribute ❤
I was at Rock City. It rocked.
I’ve given up my ticket for the London gig this week. What’s criminal, is that his solo bands of the past, with Aziz Ibrahim, were brilliant. Worth the money on their own.
I saw him supporting manic street preachers in about 2003, the band he had were top quality and Aziz is such a good guitarist.
Aziz is playing pub floors atm. For free I believe
Ian brown legend
I love your sense of humor 🤣🤣
'lets say Nando's...' LOL
My old man's a dustman has the same vibe as this gig.
'Pressing the spacebar and holding a pint' ........ priceless xx
I went to the Ian Brown gig Nottingham, 6th October 2022, not expecting much after the reviews in the press. It was one of the best gigs I've been to in years!! Never trust reviews in the press, a bad review gets them much more attention then an honest review!!!!
Hah! Way to show diplomacy and tact. You kept it tasteful, yet sprinkled it with just enough sarcasm AND truth to make it entertaining. All the while donning a kick-ass vintage rock-n-roll t-shirt. Justin, you ARE rock-r-roll! Thanks.
We saw him in Nottingham a few days ago, one of the best gigs ever!! 40 quid is nothing for a gig in this day and age, Ian Brown was amazing and a crap camera video does not catch the true sound and energy, not to mention his interactions with fans. The guy is a true legend.
Well said, how can he comment on this without actually being at the gig. The sound was NOTHING like this crappy phone video. Every gig was amazing. No one walked out
“Bez and Shaun Ryder rolled into one” 😂😂😂
It’s Jez from Peep Show, without Superhans “This is outrageous, this is contagious!!” 😂😂😂
This is outrageous, even as a stone roses fan.
No it's worse , he didn't do any roses stuff, he refused

Only way he could top this is if he doesn't even physically show up for the next gig and does a pre-record.

Ian Brown karaoke nights sounds a blast if he can get away with it before the penny drops. The accountants tour.
He’s always been a shocker of a singer.
The Roses though 😎
First time I ever seen the darkness was in Scotland t in the park was and still is an amazing band, can't wait to see u guys next February.great channel also.
Your rendition of the na na nas was hysterical 😅😅😅
lol it was
I see rappers playing their own CDs over the PA and yelling out 2 or 3 words from each line and apparently that's normal, I never see them criticized for it.
if brown was singing in my back garden i wouldnt even look out the window..
If my window was open I'd definitely pull it shut.
I would call the police and have him removed if he was in my garden....would rather lick the floor of an abbatoir than see Ian Brown and I'm Vegan 😱🤯
I would because I’d be wondering how Ian Brown has ended up in my back garden
Apparently, right. Trespass isn't illegal until you're asked to leave.
😂😂😂😬
Thanks Great channel. The only one i watch religiously. Yes, I have a corner of the room with icons and plectrums and candles.
Qvestion. Is it one of those artistic integrity bullshit things? Thoughts on the back of a matchbox to... Nick Heath Belfast
Thanks Nick! I'll try get to this.
Brown's setting a new precedent with this gig. It's only a matter of time till others follow where he has led.
there is a whole very rich genre that already does this and it is called rap but even they at least get a visible DJ and sometimes even a hypeman
@@EclecticoIconoclasta *MC, not "hypeman". And him liking hip hop that much and knowing that his fans will take whatever he throws at them, he knows he can pull this off for a while

Going to see him in Nottingham on Thursday, can't wait to be bitterly disappointed!
Not entirely sure what anyone's expecting in 2022 with an Ian Brown gig
Flying robots and machine guns
Today, a spade was called a spade.
PJ Harvey, supporting U2 in the early to mid nineties at Hampden. She burnt through 2 amps, stropped out, left the stage in a huff, amazing worth the entry fee on its own. Ian Broon has nae vibe.
Mighta been Celtic park. I was sober, but young. Can't say the same...
And you've got nae taste.
That's the poshest stationary organiser i've ever seen in the top-left. I want a gold one now too!
Good comment
Exactly
The bucket hats were a long range clue.
Justin! When can we get tabs for your theme?
I don’t write tabs, you’ll have to do it!
He made millions from the Roses reunion, he could have splashed out on a band ffs
I have a lot of brown gig from Edinburgh on my channel.
It was a 1 man show & after £1,200 for the venue for 6 hours £ £1,300 security he pocketed £120,000.
He had 1 personal security guy & 1 guy playing his laptop backing tunes.
He did the O2 tour so he doesn't pay management costs they give him 20 days to pick 15 of their venues in the UK cheap.
Barrowlands Glasgow is £2,000 to hire + security.
It was money nothing else.
1 hour 20 mins.
1.3m for himself.
Most bands of 5 get around 15,000 per person, per night because they have management, brown didn't.
People did walk out but it finished well.
Can't wait to see Ian Brown unplugged in New York.
I saw him once at V festival, he was chronic, then I saw him with the stone roses at heaton park and I thought it was great…………he obviously needs a band.
Can anyone tell me who makes that leather jacket Justin has on?
So people can rip off artists paintings with a few descriptive words at a computer but this guy is being criticized for singing to the songs he wrote in a real setting, surrounded by real people?
that was absolutely hilarious. Would’ve loved to of been there, I’d have been in stitches 🤣 although paying £40 is a bit steep!
Can I ask why you wrote 'of', and then 4 words later, correctly wrote 'have'?
It's a bit curious
And 3 words previously, 'would've'.
That's all three in one sentence. Don't think I've ever seen that. Nice
