I was actually fortunate enough to be able to go back and relive some of my favorite memories back in October, when i returned to California for a visit. It had been almost 12 years since i had been out there, and some things were different, but not everything. The people are what i miss most about being out there. Not the touristy shops, or Charlie Browns Farms, but the family i have found. A woman i consider on of my four grandmothers has been in failing health for about two years, and she's starting to get Alzheimer's and having issues remembering who people are, but as soon as i walked into the room, she smiled broadly and said 'there's my babygirl'. Then a man i consider my grandfather (who is also in failing health) looked at me like i was the most important person in the world to him. I can still smell Grandma Vera's famous seafood gumbo cooking...i can hear Uncle Darrell laughing...and i can see Grammy McIntyre wearing her colorful and wonky-looking hats in church.

A retention pond is a field near a river to prevent flooding. So if it rains a lot, the rivier will overflow, but it will flow into the retention pond. We also have these in the Netherlands, and i used to play in them too! Btw, i love your vid's!

My grandparent's old house. They abruptly moved about 4 years ago now but I can still vividly remember the inside and the amazing trees in the backyard I loved so much. I think they had a couple willow trees, but I'm not sure! All I know is they were fun to play on and all the bunnies and squirrels got names whenever we visited. I miss that house a lot.

Oh man, the nostalgia hits so hard. I've moved away from my home town to another country to study and haven't seen it for 3 years. I would definitely revisited my childhood with friends, when all I cared about was getting out of the house and just do stuff with my friends. I'm actually really proud that I've managed to keep the friendship going with my best friend for over 15 years now. Can't wait for summer to go back to my sunny home town and hang out with my friends and family.

I'm originally from Pennsylvania, and my grandparents had a shore house on L.B.I. (Long Beach Island) which is, the Jersey Shore. I miss that place so much and all the memories it has. I also miss the homemade clam chowder and fudge! It's an awesome place to visit, and whenever I talk to my friends from Pennsylvania we always end up talking about the shore and its fond memories.

I'd love to go back to when I was about 8/9 in my old house. I have so many good memories there. There were several families with kids living on that street, and we would all go outside pretty much everyday. One thing we loved to play was "Chalk City". We would make roads and houses drawn on the sidewalks/road with chalk and drive on the chalk roads with our bikes, scooters and 'wigglecars'.
Some days some of us would be bad guys and steal some pebbles from a neighbor's house, and then the rest would be the good guys. The good guys would track down the bad guys and we would have this epic showdown/fight where we would all dramatically die. I actually fractured my wrist playing that one day, I took a sharp turn on my bike while being chased by good guys.
I could go on forever about back then lol

About the retention pond: like you said, in areas with a lot of rainfall, the water needs to flow somewhere -- so sometimes if you build on such an area with a natural slope, excessive, uncontrolled underground water flow will actually cause a lot of erosion, which can be bad for the land, plants, and building foundations. Thus, builders will make large retention ponds like what you saw that are at lower levels than everything else so that the water flows there, and then under these ponds, there will be specific types of soil/stones/plants that can be used to filter and control the movement of surface water down into and through the ground. :)

The street I grew up on used to have these old, huge elm trees that lined the street and made such a good canopy over the sidewalks and houses. But when I got a little older the trees all died from the West Elm disease, and even though some new trees have been planted it just doesn't have that same charm.
As for the QOTD...mine's not a memory so much as a wish. I was born two weeks late and my paternal grandfather passed away just a few days before I was finally born. I think it would have been so nice for the whole family for me to have been born on time and thus be able to meet him, even if I would never have remember it.

The place you used to live in is very beautiful, Matthias. The 'no parking on the street' thing makes all the difference indeed. It's great when you talk about your stories and your past. Me and my whole family would always go on our pontoon boat on a lake that was about 45 minutes away and we all bought a house and would take our campers and we would stay weeks/months at a time it was amazing! Me and my brother were the two that missed it the most, so we talked to our grandparents and last year they bought us a new pontoon boat since they sold the other one. Now every weekend we go back up there, like we used to!! =D

I miss him everyday and I wish I could go back and just talk with him for hours.

I tend to enjoy my time at home more than going out, and I've always lived in the same house for my whole life. We used to have our computer (which I spend a large amount of time on) in this one room that was dedicated to our computer stuff and it had this certain smell to it that whenever I walk into it I get a ton of memories, but we moved the computer out into the tv room which is a lot bigger and converted the computer room into a storage room. Sometimes there can be a lot of commotion in the tv room and a lot of times I wish I had the seclusion of the old computer room. I can't really move my computer back into that room, and I wish I could revisit the old room with its old setup. I know that the question was asking something a little different, but when I think back to my childhood, that room stands out to me the most. I also had a question for Matthias, I know you talked a little about it in the video, but whats the story behind you living in Florida for (from what it sounded like) a year then moving back?

I just moved, and I haven't been gone for 12 years, but the things I used to know from there are fading, because I am trying to embrace this new place I live in, and switching high schools doesn't help as I try to figure out what high school is about. But this new place is going to be awesome, I know that, and it isn't going to do me any good to sulk in the good memories I had there, and never make any good memories here. But that cool that you remember the things that you did there in Florida and that you have memories, just when you talked about the memory stuff I felt like I could relate a little bit.

In a couple of weeks, by a roundabout way, my sister and I will be going back (from Montana) to Virginia where we grew up. We are planning to take along a couple of our cousins from Manitoba, Canada, who also grew up there. Hoping to see some old familiar places, as well as spend time with our Grandparents, Uncles, Aunts and Cousins. Your neighborhood in Florida find of reminds me of where I grew up, except I lived in the country. I'm not sure yet what specific places we will go to, or who we will end up seeing, but I am "Super Stoked!" as Matthias would say!

There's this place near where I live where my best friend and I attended her brothers baseball games. It was called the VFW, sort of like a banquet hall in the building and then baseball fields surrounding it. Behind one of the fields, there was this small strip of forest, but there were little trails and stuff in it. We used to go back there all the time, and play games and stuff. They closed it off now, but I wish I could go back there and relive the times I had.

QOTD: This isn't exactly answering the question, but this past year we just moved back to my hometown in NY. Eventually I'd like to get out of here (it's a small town) and move closer to a city, but for now it's nice to be around the area I grew up in again. :)
Also, I've probably said this before but, your cinematography is so beautiful! I could watch an entire video of the cutaways where you play music and film different scenery. :) It's really unique.

In 2012, my family was made to move out of the house my parents had lived in for 26 years because the land the house was on belonged to a mining company. I was only 18 at the time and had never lived anywhere else so it sucked to see my entire childhood just taken away and torn down like that. But now, almost 3 years later, it's really just a memory and it would be weird to see our old house again, but I still know it by heart. Sorry for the novel, I could just relate to what you were talking about haha

My friends mom owns the keke's on Fairbanks! it's so funny that you guys went there. The neighborhood I grew up in has the trees overhanging too. I kinda forgot that the trees are such a big part of florida, and the lakes. And yes a retention pond is where the water goes when it rains a ton. like we have a few in the park near our house and my mom hates them. She thinks they're super dangerous for kids because they just looks like a patch of land when it's not raining, but the land is usually wet and kids can trip or sink into the ground or something like that. And they look much more shallow than they are because when they're filled with water the land absorbs it and kinda becomes "hollow" if that makes sense. I don't know I never had a problem with them.
aotd: if I could relive one moment of my life it'd probably be the road trips my family took to Jacksonville from winterpark to see our grandparents. We always had so much fun there because our grandparents had food that our mom wouldn't let us eat at home and a bunch of toys and the guest room room was super cool. All of that was before my dad and my grandpa died. It used to be such a fun place and now we don't go there anymore because after my granddad died, my grandma moved here to winter park. I remember once I put on a talent show for my family and I sang like a song and my brother did a wrestling match, we used the bed as a stage and my sister probably did something too that I can't remember. Like I've said in other aotd, singing has always been a huge part of my life so it's cool to remember all of that from my childhood that I had completely forgotten, thanks!

When I was a kid, we used to go up in the mountains to a place called Wartburg Falls. We would climb up around behind a waterfall to the ledge beyond it, and then jump into the water below. As a child, it seemed like it was really high up, but I think it may have only been about 15 feet (which is certainly high enough). We had to wear life-jackets when we jumped, so that we would pop up to the surface quickly. We also had to be careful and jump out away from the ledge so that we wouldn't hit the rocks below. How crazy is that? I don't know how my parents did it, having to watch out for 4 kids, but we could all swim great and we always did stuff like that up in the mountains of Tennessee, swimming in lakes and creeks and stuff. I think I would be too scared to take my 3 girls to do something like that, I'd be so worried about them. But that was normal for us as a child. Unfortunately, the Falls got closed off when I was growing up, and you're not allowed to go there, but that is a place I would love to revisit, if it were still the same as it was back then.

QOTD: I don't remember much of my childhood, so I don't know any points there I would like to go back to and re-live. Last year, however, was an awesome point in my life. It was my first ever time out of my home country when I went on a Geography trip down to England then under 2 weeks later I went over to France and Belgium for a History trip. Those 2-4 weeks I would LOVE to re-visit!

I live on the east coast so i definitely see the trees almost everywhere, but i do live more northern, so they are not as common. P.S. Tea forte is a really expensive, delicious tea brand, i have their loose leaf tea, which is really flavorful. Sorry for typing that "P.S.", i just waned to give you guys some brief description of the product since you guys might've liked, idk. ouo

Haha, Michael, Matt and Matthias on the same block (sub division) 😁 is there something about names beginning with M there? 😁😁 also, the place you lived for a brief moment of your life is very beautiful; and I know what you mean about the trees overhanging the street, it all looks very clean 😊

I would like to revisit my grandparents house 10 years ago, because 90% of my childhood memories were spent there.

Thanks for the vid. I found it very touching as i really can comprehend your thoughts. We also moved to another city long ago. And when I revisited the old places years later, I was kind of disappointed, because in my memories everything was bigger, brighter, nicer... Did you also experience this romanticization?

I go to Kiki's all the time for breakfast! And Matthias is right, we are used to the rain. (If you don't get my point, I live in Orlando.)

I used to live in California and moved when I was eight. For years I wanted to move back, but I later realized I only wanted to go back because I hate the place I live now (I am here because of one of my parent's jobs). There was actually a lot of racism and crazy people there and I was just too young to notice. I'm not sure if I want to go back to that specific city I lived in.

Basically I'd like to revisit my birth place. I was born in Portugal but we didn't stay there long. I was 3 when we (my family) arrived into Australia. Now I'm 30, would love to go there with my dad and visit especially see the hospital where I was born. Funny story, my name now is Ricardo whom my god father named me when I was born but my parents would have named me Alfredo De Costa which was the name of the hospital I was born in and they thought about it and dad said not along those lines but similar, "Its a weird name, maybe we should name him something else" haha. My parents had a lot of photos from Portugal, a lot of the places were religious, there was a photo of my dad holding me as a baby standing in front of a store that sells religious statues of the virgin mary. Will be going soon.

I would revisit the time I went to Germany with my family, it was so beautiful there and I can't remember much of anything besides snips of pictures in my head and a few moments here and there (I was 5) I'd love to go back now and understand it
Also it kills me how close you guys are to me and I've had school and stuff and wanted to go to the parks you guys were at and possibly actually meet you guys in person, like that would be sooo cool

It was a family vacation, everyone told my parents not to bring me because I was so young but I'm glad they didn't listen because I still remember certain things :)

I would love to go back to my elementary school or seeing my old teacher, especially my English teacher. Because she's the one who made me fall in love with the language and thanks to her I'm studying it, I'm almost bilingual, so I would love to thank her.

I would go back when I was walking from ages 3-5 years old in the Philippines. Loved every second of it. But now that I'm in a wheelchair, I feel like I'm just moon walking everywhere with six extra feet (wheels) LOL.
P.S. Amanda is SOO Pretty! Oh & you as well Mathias! lol
