As Cantonese diaspora learning Mandarin, I’m happy to hear the sample conversations are identical to the Cantonese ones. Really goes to show just how similar the two languages are. Thanks for the video. Really helps my listening.
I use to speak mandarin pretty advanced, but have lost it. I am currently making my way back to proficient and this is very helpful. Definitely not for beginners, but I LOVE THIS for intermediate folks! :)
I listen to these at work and I have found the more I listen the word sequences come to me in real time. Getting used to this paying will be good for my future studies.
I found that watching Chinese dramas with Chinese subtitles and English subtitles right under at the same time is really helpful! It’s good practice and it’s fun!
Short story here: I've been learning to speak Mandarin and read hanzi for the past 12 months VERY CASUALLY (5-20 minutes per day). I'm happy to say I can guess all of the dialogues in the first 15 minutes correctly before any text appears (I'm still watching this video now) :) I don't understand everything, but I can figure out what they're talking about from key words (names of foods plus 'bu - no', 'hao de - ok', etc) or time of the day 'dian' plus the number, 'si' etc and working out whether each time on the screen is the one they choose. A few other words that I understand add into the mix of each conversation and give me a pretty good idea of where the conversation is going. It's great to see DuoLingo, TinyCards, Pocasts and listening to Mandarin music is actually paying off. I'm about to move to Italki to take actual lessons to learn Mandarin slang words and words/phrases that makes me sound more natural. If you're thinking about learning Mandarin or any language, just do it, it's so rewarding and you can connect and converse with people you never thought possible.
I would like to add that with all the pinyin suggestions, I personally disagree. You need to learn to read Chinese characters if you want to get around comfortably if you go and visit. This of course is personal preference because I'd rather be independent, but honestly, learn the 3 step process: Chinese character, pinyin then the English translation, eventually you can just look at a character and say the pinyin without thinking, and also know it's meaning in your native language. Mandarin is considered hard because of the added steps to read, plus the tones. If you really want to learn the language and culture, this is essential IMO.

Please add the pinyin for all. As a Chinese learning method, you surely know that the tone must be perfect. I am spending a lot of time looking up the words in which I'm not sure of the tone!
I have been learning Chinese for 12 years, I’ve been going to a dual language school since I was 3. I’ve been to China 4 times and I’ve been attending Chinese speech contest and singing contest and a bunch of different Chinese competitions since I was younger. I’m taking the ap chinese test tomorrow and I’m scared because I’m not really good at making a conversation on the spot so I’ve been practicing a lot.
Please send help. Chinese tones is driving me crazy.. its easy to say first tone sound like this, 2nd sound like this, etc. But in real conversation, I barely can hear the differences between tones.
i d say tones are rather important.the reason u barely hear the differences between tones id s becz we d judge by the contexts to tell the meaning of words.we r already extremely familiar with each tone of each words.so it s so natural and easy to say a sentence
Tone is important (猫毛 哈哈) but, like the others said, it comes with lots of practice and context. You’ll get there - I’ve been studying five years and live in China now. ;)
Hello. thank you for the great and awesome work. I love your videos. As a learner of mandarin if you are open to positive suggestion. you need to put pinyin(more important) for learners in conversation Chinese characters may not be as useful than seeing pinyin to understand the pronunciation and tones. If possible add pinin to the conversation so students can see and understand the words better. Thank you. I am a teacher and speak 5 languages. mandarin is number 6. Again thank you for the hard work.
Vietnamese study this lesson he or she will find it is very convenient to learn. One Chinese word = one Vietnamese word in so many cases. But this is not true for American or others. The English subtitles here are a bit of different to the real meaning of Chinese phrases. But in general, it is good enough.
I ve been learning intensively mandarin for one year by my self. Overall I can understand this video, but listening and speaking are always my problems. I realise that in real life Chinese people do not talk slow like this, it is still good to practice anyway.
Can someone tell me what speed multiplier should I use to match native Chinese speech? I was thinking 1.25x or 1.5x. Can someone clarify? Any response is highly appreciated especially for new learners like me :)
