A co-defendant of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch was killed in England after being struck by a car just days before Lynch and five others went missing when a luxury superyacht sank off the coast of Italy on Monday, authorities confirmed Tuesday..... Really strange timing...

As a professional delivery and charter skipper, of sailboats, and well over 100k sea miles in several oceans, I find most of these comments so ridiculous from people who probably have NEVER set foot on a yacht much less experienced any wx events at sea. Instead of being so quick to blame the captain perhaps wait until an official report is completed. A couple of my thoughts to clear up some possible misconceptions,
I think it’s safe to say, there were no ports open, on a luxury yacht the generator would have been on with everyone sleeping comfortably in air conditioning. Wealthy folks are not into camping.
You don’t hold the captain position on such a yacht without years of experience.
Weather can change in moments. Water spouts (basically a tornado over water) may not show up on radar. It was dark so you wouldn’t see them coming at night and even if you did they are as erratic as a land tornado. To think you could just pull up anchor and move out of the way is ludicrous.
I certainly do not know why she sank and will await the final report. Regardless, it is a tragic loss of life.

Exactly. All kinds of things could impact the hull of a moving vessel and sink it. All kinds of moving things could impact a stationary vessel and sink it. Very few things could sink an unsinkable vessel without impact. If we are to believe that a water spout inundated the vessel with an overwhelming amount of water, then I guess it could sink. Given the footage we have, I can't believe that wind was enough to sink it.

Italian boats are highly risk of building / electric / mechanical and engineering. 20 years of my experience shows that final finishing and never pay attention to difficult scenarios while building is causing this result. Look at the boat next to sinking boat/ comparing age and building you can’t even compare. Nothing happens to such and old boat. Technically it is builder and captains fault. They must keep the keel all the way down for better stability. Keeping the keel up only required for shallow areas or down wind sailings. So sad to hear that Mike Lynch and the other missing guests are being found dead, there was hope for a while.
Crew and guests simply being questioned for a few hours is inadequate. This should a murder/manslaugher inqury from the outset, involving both Italian police and British police in conjuntion with the UK's specialist MAIB (Marine Accident Investigation Branch). Already there are reports that the captain was not concerned about the weather and had not been checking for more more detailled information, at the same othe yachts had left the country to avoid the known risks. It seems also that something was seriously amiss with the procedures that night.
The designer is correct about the boat being unsinkable. Yachts are required to have watertight bulkheads, so that in the event of one area being flooded the boat will not only float upright but can be operated in even a limited way. I wonder if the captain was supported by a shore team.

    • @sonneversets3530
      @sonneversets3530 21 день тому +3

The investigation is ongoing w/more being added to it.
You can be sure all crew & Captain will be vigorously questioned.
They said all the captain could even say at first was, “We didn’t see it coming.” From the shock he was in.
Open hatches had to be an issue as well. It just went down too quick.
Crew should have woken up guests w/life vests when the storm hit, too. More may have survived.
Human error seems a viable cause, overall.
I would think some charges will be filed when this investigation is over.

The Titanic ignored the iceberg warning from another ship for far too long, then when realising the danger turned the ship so the entire side got opened up. I have built these super yachts all over Europe from England to Italy and i can 100% tell you ( like i said to my wife ) this not normal! NO way! Boats today are built to weather these storms easy . If you see how these super yachts are tested with safety ( like pumps ,loads of alarms , tuff sealed doors ) . They are close to unsinkable IF staff follow basic protocols ( not leaving garage door , cabin crew doors open ) but even then alarms would be extremely loud if slight flood because it would set of pumps . They say the keel was up ( massive mistake ) so it couldn't right it's self . Not the boat fault , this sounds like massive human mistake.

I heard of another "unsinkable" ship. It had a quite popular ost!

I wonder how many watertight bulkheads this ship had and how many were actually secured. The sip had a lifting keel (Swing). Regardless of the position of this keel, the ship should have easily been capable of raising itself after it was blown over in a freak gust as most ballast is in the hull, not the keel, specially with no sails on her. Unless massive loads of water were allowed to ingress in a very short period of time, eg wide open doors and hatches and unsecured bulkheads. Study stability curves of a sailboat and yes, the numbers change with the keel up vs down, but should never change to the point where the boat "needs" the keel to be safe. Remember the primary function of the keel is to prevent drift to leeway when under sail, particularly when close hauled. (zigzagging into the wind/upwind). Before anyone opens their mouth with another uneducated opinion, lets first wait and see what the particulars are of the design and how compliant the crew was in their procedures to attain the capability of the so called "unsinkable design". In other words, a car seatbelt can prevent you from severe injury, but if you are not wearing it.....don't blame the car.

Saying a boat is unsinkable is as stupid as saying something is bulletproof.

The most robust vessels that have the lowest chance of sinking are fishing boats.

Is it so simple: they had the 10 m long keel up which together with a 75 m long (!) mast brought the centre of gravity much higher so that the boat became unstable. A powerful waterspout led to a 90 degree listing. It was a hot night. The portholes, hatches and doors were open, a massive amount of water poured in and down she went.
