I will be dating myself a bit here....but when I was a kid the gas cookstoves had pilot lights. Ours was in the center of the stove, between all four burners. You had to maintain it; if it wasn't lit the burners wouldn't work. That's how I think of spirituality/my faith. It should be in the center, and if it is not well cared for none of the four burners work the way they should.

With chronic illness, my only burners have been health and family. I tend to feel guilty I'm not working or going to school like others in their 20s. This was validating! It also helps me to think of this time of extra focus on my health as "sharpening the saw" so I can more effectively do school/work/etc. later. This is the season for preparing for a better future and I don't need to feel guilty for not doing everything now. Thank you for your videos! 😊💗 I also love thinking as Jesus and spirituality as the common thread through everything!

I would say that our relationship with God is the stove itself - the foundation for the burners.

Such a great analogy! For me, I don’t see any reason we can’t overlap our burners. I can go on a walk or ride bikes with my kiddos and consider it health and family. Invite another family and it’s friends too! I think if we talk about the beauty we see around us and God’s hand in our life while doing those activities get can be spiritual too. That’s just one example. But for me, I like to touch all of those areas of my life daily, even if it’s just a a few minutes. And I’ve noticed the benefit of small actions accruing and compounding positively over time.

I have found that when you sacrifice time to spend with the Lord, He always gives back 10 fold. If you spend time with him, He will provide time for @Family, @Health, @Work and @Friends. He doesn't generate more time in your day, but I'm always amazed at how the interruptions and distractions seem to lessen and scheduled activities become more harmonized. You just can't out give God. The Law of Reciprocity includes the use of our time. - "Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” Luke 6:38 (ESV)

I think our Spiritual Life isn’t a burner - it’s the fuel. When our relationship with God falls apart, it’s as if the gas line or electrical cord is partially blocked and we don’t have enough fuel to do anything. But when God is fueling our family relationships or our work lives, friendships or physical/mental health - that’s when truly amazing things happen!
Thank you for this “food” for thought today (and every Sunday)!

So much has changed in the last 12months I think we've all had to readjust our lives dramatically .. Im homeschooling, something I never wanted to do or imagined doing and at times feel a little overwhelmed but it is what it is and have had to adapt .. I found for us at least its defining roles and doing what we can to make it easier on each other eg. hubby works, I dont so I take care of 90% of the house stuff and he pitches in on the weekends to give me a break .. Health, family and friends is combined and we do more outdoor activities, we've also decided that Sunday is family day and in the afternoon everything stops and we make popcorn and watch a movie together or we play a board game etc ... Decluttering and minimizing has helped a lot because now I am able to keep up with the house stuff, also setting up a weekly schedule and doing an area a day instead of trying to do everything in a day .. also simplified dinners by utilizing the instant pot and crockpot more, Im making a Mississippi roast today and it literally took 2-3 minutes to set up, decided to make a baked potatoes to go with, which takes a couple minutes to wash and set up instead of peeling and mashing etc ... I think sometimes we over think things and make it into something much bigger then it has to be, Ive always been one of those that has grand plans and then stress for days but simplifying has helped, still learning and adjusting .. Im really starting to take the quote 'progress over perfection' to heart and its making a big difference in my life ..

I never thought of why the curtain was torn in the temple. I assumed it was to demonstrate the gravity of Jesus dying on the cross. Similarly to when people tore their clothes when they were angry or in anguish. Once you said it, it made so much sense. We all have access to the presence of God now. The curtain was torn to allow us in to relationship with God. Thank you for showing this to me. Love you both! God bless.

I also think some of these burners depend on your season of life. I am retired so the work burner isn’t an issue any more, but the family and health burners have taken on greater significance. If anything has replaced the work burner it’s frugal living because of less resources. I always try to remember the verse, “moderation in all things.”

Love love love!! Especially the spiritual perspective y'all shared at the end. I've been in a place of feeling spread very thin. I'm a newlywed, with a new baby (first time mom at 42) and we take care of my 80 year old diabetic father. I've been a christian since I was 5 and serve on the worship team at my church, but because of having to put so much in so many different areas, the last few years my spiritual walk, has lacked. I love God and still pray throughout the day, but just don't always get the time with Him in his word and to really feel like I'm getting refueled to give out to others, but especially my family and home. And at times getting short with my family because I feel so stressed. Thank you for sharing all that you have and I can feel the stress falling away. God bless you both!

Dawn, I have benefited soooo much from your vlogs over the past few years. You helped me get moving during a deep depression where at times all I could do was lay in bed watching youtube. I began watching things like your vlog to learn about getting rid of things, and your pal Cas at Clutterbug to get motivation and hacks to clean. You guys helped me get out of bed, and made a really down time in my life feel productive because even when I couldn't get moving, I was learning skills (and receiving nourishing encouragement) that I now use daily. This has freed up a lot of energy for me! So Thank You so much! and a deep bow to you!! I am on my own Spiritual Journey which has been majorly transformational for me. I have to let you know that it's not Christian, and because of my upbringing the religious talk sometimes slipping into your vlogs makes me feel really uncomfortable. I stopped watching for a while because I was never sure when it was going to happen- it used to be contained in a separate Sunday segment but it seemed like it had started slipping into others. However, I missed watching you- you have culled such a vast amount of knowledge and skills, and you bring such energy and fresh perspective and insight which I have been needing to renew my grip on "things." I love when people have a Spiritual life- it's so very important. I honor that and bow deeply to you on your path and I'm so happy that you have found your way- but I wanted to communicate that for some of us the preaching may be alienating. I think even if we shared the same faith it would feel jarring/ off-topic to have a sermon break out when we are here to learn about minimalism. Again- I respect whatever you do. Perhaps you might consider a more clearly delineated space for that? Or perhaps you could give notice when that's going to happen (or maybe even just the minutes it's going to happen) so I can skip it. I want to keep watching! The main thing I want you to feel from this post is just overwhelming gratitude! It's very clear that you are trying to create an environment of inclusion and community. Maybe everyone is just Christian where you live so that it may not have occurred to you that others may feel a bit excluded by it. Regardless, you're awesome, you do amazing work, and I LOVE YOU!!!

I started using this concept around 2005 and it’s served me well. Different categories and different analogies but I stick to one focus at least a month, usually 3 months. I choose one major focus but a secondary is a high priority and I commit to what can and can’t be done to make it happen. We’re just coming out of an out of state move so as much as I may want to focus on something else, life certainly put some things in my hands so I have to do my best and make peace with it. Push goal and reverse engineering goals works very well.

A tip for potty training: Create a treat jar and when they use the potty they get to pick a treat. It can be their favorite snack (example - small packs of gummies) or a sticker for their hand, just something they like. Nothing expensive. It helps remind them to go to the potty instead of their diaper. It works. Soon they will be going to the potty every time. As they advance a little bit using the potty, put on underwear instead of diapers. Get their favorite character underwear and they don’t want to mess them up. Just little things to make the process of learning to go to the potty easier and exciting. Hope this helps others in this season. God Bless Everyone.

Love it. The best realization I ever came to (wish it hadn't taken so long!!) is that my life/family/priorities don't need to follow everyone else's, and a popular 1-2-3 approach isn't necessarily a magical fix to my situation because there are unique elements for each person/family. It's ok to figure out what works best for the personalities that make up my family and situation. AND, those priorities change with seasons of life. I always used to try and copy everyone else and realized I need to take elements of what works for us and compile my own way. This basic truth is so helpful - you can't be 100% in all areas. It is freeing to know that.

I think it’s helpful to prioritize within each category too! I may not have time to maintain a group of friends, but I have time for 1 or 2 close friends, so I pour my energy into those relationships and don’t worry about creating a bigger circle. I may not have energy to create a perfect Instagram life for my kids each day, but I can make sure that we snuggle and read a book every night. I may not have the energy to eat super healthy and work out every day, but I can focus on just eating more fruit and always having fruit available in the fridge. Focusing on the one thing in each category that would add the most benefit and be the most doable and letting go of everything else in that category that I don’t have time for!

Sometimes our friends need us more than other times and vice versa. Sometimes our family has health issues so they need us more than normal - extended family is in this category too. I've been retired for about 15 months but my mom has been needing me more than she has before during that time frame. Also, other family & friends have needed me. Yes some of this is not under our control. Sometimes we just learn to roll with stuff. My goal was to exercise everyday after retirement but that has not happened due to these other priorities that I have mentioned plus others. But I have exercised much more than I did before when I was working. So basically we just do the best we can and adjust when necessary. This is good advice basically and it gets us thinking about things but it's hard to delete one category totally - maybe cut down as you said.

I am in a season where my ‘work’ is crazy busy, (dental office protocol during pandemic), I have a husband with some chronic pain and my father is struggling with depression due to a new life with my mother in a nursing home. I am not complaining just trying to be realistic. Here in Ontario we continue to be in lockdown which adds to the dynamics. Trying to use all 4 burners is impossible.
Also, as a Christian, I 100% appreciate the fact that you share your struggles and are ’REAL’ with us! Thank you again and again!

Wow.. this hits home in so many ways right now. I'm considering a career change from a place that I've been in for 14 years. It's a scary thought that I may not be making as much money but does that offset the continual stress and the differing values that make my life miserable? I don't think so. God doesn't want us to be miserable in His work. Having Him at the center of everything balances it all out. Thank you for sharing this perspective with us.

Hi happy Sunday. I have talked about watching your videos a lot. A friend of mine has a daughter who is married with children she talks about you also. I send my friend videos I think she will be interested in. Her husband has also started watching your videos with her. She asked me about your filing system she had watched a video where you had mentioned that. I sent her three videos this morning about that subject. She said I have inspired her and her husband to start decluttering. The compliment is actually because of you and your sharing of your life and your family with all of us. Thank you for all your help. Thank you for everything. I have learned so much. My home is my sanctuary now. I love my home now. Thank you.

Another wonderful Sunday video! Love that I can watch these videos the day they come out now that I am caught up. I truly love this idea of the burner because I think its true we can’t do everything and its important to remember that when we are in a busy season. But I also love the point of remembering to make time for those burners that may be turned down. One big change I made this year as a teacher is taking my work email off my phone and only working till 4-5pm as best as I can. It’s making sure that my family burner can come up more in the evening and enjoy the time with family especially during this third lockdown we are in right now in Ontario where we need to family and quality time. I also have made sure to put more self care time in for myself because why not take advantage of being home in lockdown and being in the present of my own mind and prayer. Thank you for the Sunday reminder and beautiful prayer. Love you both :)

Diana I really appreciate your explanation of the significance of the temple veil. Especially the tearing of the veil when Christ sacrificed His life for us. Great analogy for God’s presence being the center burner in our lives too. Dawn is right, we CAN allow ourselves to place other categories in our lives on simmer, while we turn up the heat in one category as needed. We’re not turning the other burners off,... we’re not neglecting the other categories in our lives. I’m so glad that you joined together on this video. Thank you both for sharing your message❣️🙏

I randomly came across your channel a few weeks ago and we are on board.... All the way.
We have so much to get rid of, there's no more room to put it until the yard sale at the end of the month.
We thought that this is the perfect time to purge as we are painting and putting new floors in.
I have a pick up and my husband says we are going to bed to borrow a trailer to haul it over to the sale site.
15 totes of clothes, 8 boxes of books and movies, cabinets, chairs, dressers, hobbies/crafts, holiday items, antiques, collectibles, vintage aprons and fabric etc etc etc.
Even though the house is ti8re up right now because of the remodel, it's already feeling so much better!
    It's share a picture of I could.

Oh! This was SO helpful. Thank you Dawn and Diana. I feel so much less resistant to this idea now. I especially loved the bit about thinking ahead to what you will need to adjust burners in the next season. I’m also in agreement with Diana about spirituality. As a Christian, I feel like our beliefs simply overlay how the burners function. I think when we feel like it is another burner, it is because we are relating it to what we DO rather than who we ARE.

I recently found a very helpful idea to set priorities (max 3) for only a short time (3-6 months). This took off the pressure to focus (always) on the things that are most important from a life point of view and let me, without feeling guilty, devote most of my time and energy to a generally less important but more urgent project (e.g. declutter to later have more time and energy for the family).

Diana I hear you on potty training!! When we saw our pediatrician when our son was 3 and expressed our concerns in his lack of interest of anything related to potty training and his resistance when we discussed it, she told us that she wasn't worried unless we came back for his 4 year appointment and had the same complaints. Every child is different and has their own season. While he definitely delayed potty training, being older when he finally started he caught on quicker and we rarely had accidents. Your little one will get there whenever God has created their body and mind to sync up to be prepared for that step!

Lovely to listen to you guys while I was hanging up washing. 😁
I was really relieved when Diane said that "spirituality" would go over all. Otherwise it implies that we would need to occasionally turn it down... or switch it off! But God is over all these parts of my life: He IS my family, I am his beloved child, and I want to reflect Him in how I interact with my family and with my friends; and He is my best friend; my work is all for Christ, He is my big boss; and as for health: spiritual health is vital! - if we're not working from a godly perspective in all these things, then we are striving in vain. In reality He is the one who enables us to do any of these things, and each part of our lives should be through Him and for Him. It's like He is the fire that enables all of these "burners."
Wow, I've been rambling on for a while... Sorry about that. But I hope it made sense, and was helpful for even one person.
Lots of love and appreciation for all your videos! And love and solidarity to all my fellow watchers! 😄

When my work burner was on full blast so was my sisters and we were lucky enough to have different busy months so in her overwhelming time I had her and her family over for dinner a few times a week and vice versa. It helped so much not to have to worry about those nights. You could also do it with a friend or neighbor maybe you do 2 nights and then they do 2 nights a week it also gives you that time with them so you combine burners. I also do bluetooth phone calls while walking to double burner then as well. Good luck

One also has to consider how they spend their time. If a person chooses to be on social media, tv, Netflix etc an hour or more a day or binges for 4 hours on a Friday night then the choice of the entertainment burner or escapism burner is up for that hour. A person’s perception of “busy” is relative to their mindset. Busy doing what? There is often a level of excuses... I have kids so “I can’t or don’t have time to workout, my house can’t be clean etc. Yes, maybe you can’t work out or clean your house in 2 hour chunks, but it doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

I’m always amazed at how often I hear “I’m busy”... it makes me wonder (as a SAHM) what these people are doing all the time. After I’ved cleaned the house and made dinner I’m wondering what to do next lol! It’s good though, I like not being “busy”. But I think the social media and netflix binges makes people think they are busier than they are.

I agree, Dawn and Diana. During this season of being in our home, watching the world via media, being exposed to so much division and lack of respect, I found myself falling into that trap of judging and comparing and I didn't like it. It was changing me, and I didn't like how it was changing me. So I quit watching and following those things/people that were unhealthy for my spirit. I am the gatekeeper of what comes in and I was letting clutter come in. Just like the physical clutter, I have to say NO to the non-physical clutter. I had several reasons for decluttering my home, but it was my realization that clutter has been a spiritual distraction that has made me not give up this time.
Thank you for another great video.

I've got a 3 year old. When i returned to work they wanted me to work 12 hour shifts 6 days a week. I managed to refuse and only worked 3 shifts a week but I felt like I was missing my son's milestones. So I decided I wouldn't work more than I needed to.
So I cut right back on all spending and cut my hours to 16 hours a week.
It's the best thing I could of done, this time has been so important to me and my son.
I though I'd go back to full time when he started work, however now I'm going to stick with part time and home ed.
I couldn't care less thay we won't go on holidays abroad when it means I get to spend most of my time with my son.
Doing this also have me time to cook from scratch which is cheaper and healthier.
We have time to grow our own vegetables aswell.
Is it perfect no is it the best choice for us deffently.

I think that the Lord always gives me enough time to do everything I am supposed to do (including resting/recreation). If I don't have time to do something I'm supposed to do, it means I've spent that time doing something I wasn't supposed to do. I can't imagine Jesus telling someone, "Sorry, I didn't have time." Being Spirit-led in our activities is very important. It is a life-long lesson.
