I got stranded in the middle of nowhere Louisiana. Locals helped me jump start and I was able to get to an AutoZone miles down the road before I ran out of gas. Was quite the pain to switch out in the pouring rain in the parking lot, but had to be done. Always carry a battery boost with me from that point forward. Tip: Don't need to keep your battery booster plugged in. This will help extend it's life. Had mine unplugged for six months, still had close to a full charge and had to boost my riding mower. Worked just fine.
I do the same thing. I got five bikes on trickle chargers when I'm not riding. 49 Pan, 57 Servi-car, 68 XLH, 2012 Dresser, 2018 Ural. No effing lithium batteries.

I put a Harley branded Lithium battery in my 2021 Street Bob and I love that it can sit all winter and start right up the following spring without needing a trickle charger.
This is not a battery issue per se. It's a compatability issue with lithium ion batteries and the new more complex electrical system on 2024 and newer.
i have never put a battery on a tender, never upgraded batteries, and put down 10,000+ miles a year. i have replaced one battery in my life. both bikes start when the season comes on the first crank.
I just had a very similar situation while on our east coast/Canada trip a few weeks back--my 2017 SGS showed a dash light for part of a day, then that went off. Then the LED lights started flickering and we thought it was a bad connection or loose wire. Next morning while still in Canada, the bike was completely dead. Had to have it towed across the border to a Harley dealer in Maine. They checked everything out and came to the conclusion that it was the Li-ion battery--all connections and the charging system was working perfectly. After the battery was changed, everything is working fine and we rode over 1000 miles back home. No more Lithium batteries for me!
I hear a lot of pros and cons for the lithium batteries. I am not sold on them. I am not surprised your HD rep does not recommend them. Just stay with stock, and you will be fine. Case in point.

NEVER use a Lithium Ion Battery in your Motorcycle or car. They are inherently dangerous due to the instability of Lithium. The internal battery management system can fail and if it does, you sitting atop a several thousand (2000-4000) degree fire bomb. The battery manufacturer will never warn you of this danger, because most are made in China, where the communist government owns all manufacturing.
jajaja! Or just don't change your tried and true battery for an unproven one at the last minute when taking a long trip, OR, pay attention to the indicator telling you the battery is low, which he saw, but ignored and didn't check his manual to begin with for these energy-hungry full of technology bikes.
Hey good content, I have a 960 antigravity in my 15 CVO and was going to order one for my 24 RGCVO tonight! Glad I watched this! The 121 struggles to start sometimes and the one tap to start seems to make it worse. I better look at larger Agm batteries I guess.
I did 16 days last year up through New England and this year I'm going to do another 16 days out to California and then ride the "Mother Road" back east. I didn't have a tool kit with me last tear and thank God that I didn't need one. This year I'm not going to take chances and bought the tool kit from your store. I have a 2018 Tri Glide.
I ride 2006 Ducati. Needed to install new regulator rectifier so I got one that was spec’s for an Li battery (needs slightly lower charging voltage). Also when I put the Li battery in, I got a CTEK charger, which is specific for lithium batteries, and reconditions the battery. I plug in each of of my bikes to a trickle charger whenever they are not being ridden if the weather is cool. Regardless of battery type this seems to prolong their life. I’ve had the looking battery now for five or six years. I do live in Buffalo, New York and ride the bike through the winter. On cold days, the lithium battery doesn’t want to start the bike immediately. The folks at Microstart advised me to turn the bike on without starting and turn the lights on for a short period of time. This activity gets the battery to start warming up. After turning everything off for a moment, it then will start the bike just fine most of the time. I do carry the jumper just in case, but that battery also has a push button reset so that if I crank it till dead, I can reset it and then most of the time the bike will start. Though this seems like finicky care, in fact, the battery has lasted much better than a typical lead acid battery has for me.
I know this is a Harley page, but I ride a Kawasaki Vulcan Voyager and was given the same advice when I was looking to switch. Thanks for more clarity.
I had a evo wide glide for 18 years .The original factory gel battery lasted 14 years .i used a optimate permament float charger 24/7. I was amazed . Mind you changing the battery on the FXDWG Was a pain.
I researched it, when I was getting close for a new battery, I decided to not go with lithium, # 1 was, I live in Wyoming, and lithium batteries struggle In cold weather, I also talked with my local HD and they didn't recommend them( stated they had problems with the battery) I put a AGM back in my 2017 ultra , for several reasons #1price and #2 the original battery was over five years old and never had a problem. Plus I would of had to purchase a new lithium charger
Friend put a LI battery in a 15 year old Honda. At two different times he had one of the old electrical connections fry. Went back to the original type and had no problems since.
I rented a 2024 RG last spring in Phoenix. I went on a 6 days trip through Kayenta, Flagstaff, Sedona, Phoenix, , Tucson... The bike did shut down 5 or 6 times while at speed every other day or so. Only for 2 seconds every time, all gages gone and no throttle! And suddenly back to normal as if it never happened. Pretty scary on a crowded highway, and even in the desert! I tried to find a relationship with the cruise control, the throttle position or the riding mode but nothing correlated. Now I suppose the battery was the culprit. I advised the dealer upon return. Thanks for your channel, I'm a big fan! Thanks for sharing!
Loose battery ground on frame was the culprit on my 2010 police road king causing the same symptoms . ( Harley charged me 5 hours but never found the simple solution and no credit when confronted)
The Standard 200 AMP Battery in my Buell was not adequate the starer would stall on the compression stroke. I installed a Hybrid battery what ever that it. It is 350 amps is like 3# lighter and really cranks the engine over at a good speed that won't burn up my starter
I have one of the NOCO battery boosters and the instructions state that it is supposed to be used on LEAD ACID batteries only. This is noted in multiple places in the instructions. It is NOT to be used on other lithium batteries. Maybe that lithium battery was not really a good battery after all.
Thanks for the info. I follow some fellow PA owners and a year ago at least two of them had issues after installing Lithium Ion batteries on their Pan America's. These were a 2021 and a 2022. Im on a 2024 now . I only use the factory recommended batteries and have never had any issues on any of mine.
This is not a battery issue per se. It's a compatability issue with lithium ion batteries and the new more complex electrical system on 2024 and newer.
I’ve been using lithium batteries on my 2011 H-D Sportster 48 for many years now & understand them quite a bit. They are resilient, however, the motorcycle’s charging system cannot fully & optimally charge the battery correctly. The cells need to be optimized & equalized by a lithium charger/tender from time to time. If you don’t then the Battery Management System (BMS) within the lithium battery will shut down the battery to preserve itself. Another thing that drains the battery completely is the alarm system; that is the biggest culprit of all.
Ran that exact batter in the video for over 4 years in my 14 Street Glide. Zero issued charging. NO issues at all. I've had zero issues running lithium ion batteries in my other Harley's over many years. Very cold and hot weather Just. System charges it fine. Over 4 years one one battery that's still good. Just My experience. This is not a battery issue per se. It's a compatability issue with lithium ion batteries and the new more complex electrical system on 2024 and newer.
If you use an Opti mate on a LI battery it could cause an ECU error on some bikes. It did on mine, so I then only used it to charge only and not to maintain it.
We have had Issues(breakdown on long rides) with Lithium batteries with Hondas,Bmws, Hd even a EBR that came with a Lithium battery, when original was replaced. Lithium charging is different to Lead acid to glass mat. I just run original till replace with Dekron or Original .Get about 3to5 years, at about 45,000 KLMs a year.Northern Australia.
My 2019 TriGlide had the same issues after installing a Lithium battery. Dealer tested the battery several times and found it to be fine. This was a new battery so age had nothing to do with it plus the charging system was working properly. Installed a new Harley AGM and everything has worked perfectly since. Since the old battery tests good I cannot get the cost covered so I am just out the $350 I paid for something I cannot use. I do not suggest a Lithium in the big bikes and think air flow/heat may be a issue since the have limited air flow to these batteries.
My Harley service manager told me to “always” keep the battery tender plugged in due to all the electronics that are still running when bike is turned off. Hardly easy to do when traveling.
This is not a battery issue per se. It's a compatability issue with lithium ion batteries and the new more complex electrical system on 2024 and newer.
I have used Zero Gravity Lithium Ion Batteries for Many Years for my KTM 1290 Super Duke, rode it hard, slid out on corners, high speed, super hot weather, NO ISSUES. stock battery 10 lbs, Zero Gravity 1 lb.
I worry about the fire potential. Such a large amount of potential loss and an insurance company balking at paying up especially if the manufacturer comes back with or had a not recommended label on something is enough to make me stay with lead/acid. Thanks for the alert.
Great info for the new bike buyers. I'm an older SG with AGM. Here is a suggestion for a added item in the CUZ tool kit. How about having Lurch's cell number embossed on the cover of the roll in case we need to talk to a Harley Wizard guy on the road! Just a thought. Keep the shiney side up guys.
I have installed a completely new stereo system from Volunteer Audio on my 2023 CVO Road Glide and In his video Jay recommends replacing the stock battery with a new Lithium Ion Titan 8 battery because he says the stock battery cannot keep up with power draw of new equipment. Mainly if bike is not running... But he does say the stock batteries are not great and recommends replacing it and shows how to swap it out. Titan batteries have been back ordered for months, I just finally received mine and installed it Friday and just now watched your video.... I have reached out to Volunteer Audio to see what they say and if they will return my $700 battery I can't use now.. Just so some of the people commenting on "why would you replace the battery on a new bike??" It was mainly because it was recommended by Audio install for power draw on system. Also though when you spend $47,000 on a bike you don't expect it can't handle a lithium battery.. I do also get this is why people say don't by the first year on a new model, but I understood there would be issues and have to just deal with them as they come. Thank you for the videos to help us all out Ryan! I will let you know what Volunteer Audio replies with.
UPDATE: I spoke with Volunteer Audio's Techs and they say that the Titan batteries are a different style lithium battery and work great with all new Harley 23 and 24 bikes. They have 4 and have had no issues for over 8 month plus. They say there are issues with the other style lithium brands and how they are made. There is probably more to it and better tech specs than how I stated it but I will see how mine does. When I tied to run my new stereo system with bike on Acc and not started it would shut down to half stereo output because the battery level would drop below 12v. with new battery it runs great, I don't normally just let it sit and use stereo when not running but it was mainly for testing and good to know.

My dear friend had a 2008 ultra glide/road glide and a couple of years ago needed a new battery. The Harley dealer convinced him to go with a HD Li-on battery AND a special Li-on trickle charger. It lasted two weeks. He sent it back and they replaced the battery with another Li-on. Three weeks later it wouldn't start again. He sent it back and they went through the charging system on the bike and put in another Li-on battery. Two weeks again, he sent it back. They put in a traditional lead-acid battery and has not had a problem since. Charging a Li-on battery requires a complex charger that is designed to monitor the voltage of the battery, the temperature of the battery, the resistance of the battery, and the time it takes to bring the battery up to full charge. Have you ever noticed power tools with Li-on batteries? They have six to eight contacts to properly monitor the charge of the battery and special chargers to properly charge the battery without blowing them up. Using a Li-on battery in a car or motorcycle is a huge mistake because they are not designed to handle the requirements of a complex Li-on battery. Would you put 87 grade gas in your Harley? It would work, wouldn't it? You have been lucky so far, my friend.
I own many bikes. Harley, Kawasaki, Husqvarna. Have an Indian too right now. I have friends that ride very brand in between. Trust me when I say EVERY BRAND and models have issues. Nobody makes a perfect bike. Because they are made by humans. Love Goldwing, but nope, not even that is a perfect bike without issues over the years. I support all makes and models of bikes. Love them all. Ride safe.
I'm wondering if the LiFePO4 Battery is different than the lithium ion. I traded my 2019 Street Glide in March 2024. It was 5 years old in February. So I purchased the advanblack battery. It's been in my new bike, 2023.5 CVO Road Glide. Almost 4000 miles and no issues. I'm just wondering if there's a difference between the two?
Not sure if this mentioned in the comments bellow but maybe the jumper pack might have done something to the battery? Do you need a special jumper pack for the lithium batteries? My uncle and I travel with tools, a jump pack and he sometimes have a spare battery with him. LOL. Love the videos!!! Stay safe
No special jump pack needed for Lithium Ion batteries. Good to go. You should use a different trickly charger though --> shop.lawabidingbiker.com/collections/battery-chargers-tenders/products/battery-tender-jr-selectable-battery-charger-combo-lead-acid-lithium-ion?variant=31815163707524
It would have been helpful if you had discussed what happened to the Lithium ion battery. Did the BMS cut it off because of low voltage or high voltage? Were you able to subsequently wake it up by Giving it a charge or was the BMS fried? I have had much better luck with LifePO4 batteries in multiple motorcycles than with Lithium Ion batteries. Lithium ion batteries can be charged to over 15 volts by some motorcycle charging systems causing the BMS to shut them down until some power is drained. Your situation sounds more like a low voltage shut down, but the failure to recover with a jump pack suggests BMS failure.
I have the new 24 RG and i keep it on the 5 amp tender recommended by Harley as often as I can and the battery still seems weak for all that Tech they put on it. My question is why is it so hard to build a proper alternator to maintain battery integrity? Also, maybe putting a stronger battery in the bike instead of a battery the size of my sons power wheels might be a good idea. I should not have to constantly keep my bike on a charger. Its ridiculous. Owned Hondas all my life and literally never had to do this. 30k for a bike that is built with parts not capable of longevity. 3k miles and it sounds like a very loud sewing machine. Not to mention things coming loose all over and making noise. The ticking can be heard over the stock radio on full blast at 85mph. So unimpressed with this motorcycle that I really wish I would have looked more closely at the dct Goldwing. Anyway, great video, appreciate the info. Thinking of putting a new battery in mine that can hold the load so to speak.
The instructions that came with my Anti-Gravity lithium battery said not to use/operate above 140F. I put a new one in my 2009 883 Sportster and sure enough while riding down an Interstate highway my bike just shut down due to the battery being located so close to the rear cylinder. Otherwise a good battery. Maybe I'll just use it in the winter time.
Sorry to hear that you are stuck with this problem. But now I'm a little worried as I have a lithium battery installed too. Would the booster have helped you with the lithium battery or did you have to use the original battery in any case? Did you test the lithium battery afterwards? I understood that the lithium battery protects itself, but I would NEVER have thought that it would just go out like that while driving....
It was a solid battery. Directly out of my 2014 Street Glide. Works perfectly. This is not a battery issue per se. It's a compatability issue with lithium ion batteries and the new more complex electrical system on 2024 and newer.

@@RyanUrlacher I do have a question about the lithium ion batteries how do they preform in the cold weather like around 28 degrees. Sadly we get those temperatures in November here in NH
I've had zero issues running lithium ion batteries in my other Harley's. My experience. This is not a battery issue per se. It's a compatability issue with lithium ion batteries and the new more complex electrical system on 2024 and newer.
I watched your video all the way through and it was interesting to me because I have had trouble with automotive applications using lithium-ion batteries I think what might be happening is a spike in the electrical system activates the BDM protective circuits in the new lithium ion batteries electronics expert I'm not a radio technician I don't have a great deal of electrical experience but that's just my thought on it because they do have some serious protective circuits on them now it used to be was just a rack of subsides put into a case in okay lithium ion battery nowadays it's not that nowadays they put in protective circuits charge protection discharge protection etcetera etcetera which I really approve of in spite of the fact that it makes it difficult to use them in an automotive application because the lithium ion when it burns is very toxic and it burns very hot and it's really hard to extinguish I'd rather lose the battery than the vehicle.
Good info, and props for getting a statement from Harley confirming the use of these batteries in newer bikes👍 I’m going to save this video for 2034 when I might be able to afford a 2024 and newer Harley 👍
I have a Shorai lithium ion in two of my bikes. I installed one of them in my Yamaha Warrior in 2014 and it's still going strong. I have one in my 2022 Ducati and so far so good I like the power output especially for a bike that has heavy Demand on the electrical system. The only problem I see with these batteries is fire this can happen and an extinguisher probably won't put it out. Almost as bad as a breach of the fuel system which is one of the main causes of fires in motorcycles.
I've been running lithium ion batteries for many years in many bikes. Good to go. This is not a battery issue per se. It's a compatability issue with lithium ion batteries and the new more complex electrical system on 2024 and newer.
Stay with the good ole lead acid battery! A lithium fried some of the electrical on my Husband’s 04 Ultra Classic. So it is not just the new bikes affected. Sorry this happened to you Ryan!
I've used lithium ion batteries in my other Harley's for many years. Zero issues. Thx for the comments. This is not a battery issue per se. It's a compatability issue with lithium ion batteries and the new more complex electrical system on 2024 and newer. Ride safe. Thx much!
Does the jump pack provide only momentary power for jumping or can it supply constant power? For example to get me a short distance to get home if I have a stator failure.
It's just for jumping. And it has a flashlight and other USB ports for charging devices. All in one. ==> shop.lawabidingbiker.com/collections/battery-chargers-tenders/products/antigravity-batteries-micro-start-xp-1-jump-starter-personal-power-supply-copy
Thanks for the info, I’ve keep away from them for other reasons and have kept with AGM’s in both my bikes. I’ve heard way too many bad stories with lithium unfortunately.
Been running lithium ion batteries for many years on many bikes. Zero issues. Just my experience. This is not a battery issue per se. It's a compatability issue with lithium ion batteries and the new more complex electrical system on 2024 and newer.
Leave that Duracell in it. That's the only battery I run. Current bike has one in it with 1000w amp. A pair of 100w fog lights and full led underglow with zero issues got or cold.
I kind of question blaming the Lithium batteries. I have had two friends with 2024s who have had the same issue with the stock batteries. Both replaced under warrenty. I believe that they have a relay or module that possibly sticks or stays awake draining the batteries.
Thanks. A good constructive comment. Wish there were more of these. I've had zero issues running lithium ion batteries in my other Harley's. My experience. This is not a battery issue per se. It's a compatability issue with lithium ion batteries and the new more complex electrical system on 2024 and newer.
@RyanUrlacher I agree that the safety feature of the LiIon battery may have cut electrical. I still believe there is an underlying issue in the electronics of the bike. The battery should stay healthy enough to stay away from that safety shut-off unless there is a parasitic draw or malfunction in the system. Also, the fact you were riding when it happened, the charging system should have maintained a level in the battery to avoid the issue altogether. Either way, I hope they figure out the issues. I have been seeing more and more about electrical issues on these bikes, and it's concerning, to say the least. Love your videos. Keep them coming. You have a ton of great info. Thank you!
This is not a battery issue per se. It's a compatability issue with lithium ion batteries and the new more complex electrical system on 2024 and newer.
When I pu4chased my softail slim a cpuple years back I looked into installing a lithium battery. The parts guy talked me out of it as the stock statprs dp not charge lithium batteries, and they could not be jumpped. In the end I decided that the modifocation cost were not worth the extra cost.

There should be a class action lawsuit over these new Harleys. The electronics are terrible-likely a software or battery issue-but I've seen multiple videos and read accounts of riders getting stranded or unable to start their brand-new Harleys, RG, SG, Sportster s. Harley-Davidson needs to get it together!
I've loved my new Harley. Its a great machine. Just my personal experience. This is not a bike issue. It's a compatability issue with lithium ion batteries and the new more complex electrical system on 2024 and newer. thx for watching. ride safe
Hey Ryan, just a stupid question.. at the beginning of your story you mentioned you put in a new lithium ion battery.. what was the stock battery and why did you change it out ?? .. looks like your tool kit came in handy again cuz as the saying goes, ‘ya never know’ when you’re going to need it
Thx for the question. This lithium battery came right out of my 2014 SGS. Because, it's what I do for the biker community. I literally am testing things all the time. And this video is exactly why. This is how you find out what issues there may be. Then I can make a video and help the biker community out.
Hard to believe H-D didn't see this coming. The Lithium batteries are great, I run one in my 2015 Ultra. The perils of technology, I guess, and one more reason I will not be purchasing a new motorcycle anytime soon.

I hear a lot of pros and cons for the lithium batteries. I am not sold on them. I am not surprised your HD rep does not recommend them. Just stay with stock, and you will be fine. Case in point.
Because, it's what I do for the biker community. I literally am testing things all the time. And this video is exactly why. This is how you find out what issues there may be. Then I can make a video and help the biker community out.
Been running a NOCO 700cca li-ion for over 2 years now in my '13 FLHTK w/ 124" and never jumped, charged or anything electrical related, love it!
This is not a battery issue. It's a compatability issue with lithium ion batteries and the new more complex electrical system on 2024 and newer.
@@RyanUrlacher yes sir, you absolutely stated that and I totally understand now, Thanks!
So , I should buy your jump pack and tool kit. Got it !
jajaja! Or just don't change your tried and true battery for an unproven one at the last minute when taking a long trip, OR, pay attention to the indicator telling you the battery is low, which he saw, but ignored and didn't check his manual to begin with for these energy-hungry full of technology bikes.
I ride a 2018 touring HD. Just replaced the original battery in 2024. Bought a Deka for a replacement. Stick with what works best IMHO!
Glad you’re okay Ryan! That was a busy interstate.
thx much!
Glad it all worked out. Stay safe my brother.
Much appreciated
I know this is a Harley page, but I ride a Kawasaki Vulcan Voyager and was given the same advice when I was looking to switch. Thanks for more clarity.
U betcha!
I had a evo wide glide for 18 years .The original factory gel battery lasted 14 years .i used a optimate permament float charger 24/7.
I was amazed .
Mind you changing the battery on the FXDWG Was a pain.
Wow... not the way we would want to greet you to the Triad and G'boro NC, but welcome. Thanks for the update.
@@johnjessop In fact I ever read on another well known UA-cam Channel this could be one thing to check out.
One thing less thing to worry about with a pre-Zeitz bike. Glad you got it sorted quickly.
Yessir which Pan America's have had the new electrical systems since Rev Max inception
Thank you for the advice.
Watched your new bike video from 5 months ago, I thought I bet it broke down....the new Harley did not disappoint 🤣
Good info thanks for sharing. How about a review of your Saddlemen setup, I would be interested in that.

Appreiciate the info Ryan. Thanks!
Great tip!
you also have to be carefull to use the correct trickle charger for your lithium batteries if you use one for a standard battery it can start a fire
I know that area, don't live to terribly far from there. That is a scary spot to have a break down.
Used to go through a lead battery every 2 years. Now on lithium and 8 year on the same battery!
I had problems with my 2013 Fat Bob 2 month after changing to lithium and went back to AGM from Harley

Right on
My dear friend had a 2008 ultra glide/road glide and a couple of years ago needed a new battery.

Love them all. Ride safe.
what is the stock battery that comes from the factory ?
Excellent information!! Ryan you are the man!!
Thanks so much.
What about a 2024 road king? I just ordered a advanblack lifepo4 battery
If you did know but O Reilly carries some Harley parts and batteries in a pinch
What brand did you use for the replacement lithium battery?
What cca on your new battery. I'm having problems turning over my rev tech.
I have a 03 RG same problem!
Good to know!! thanks for sharing something constructive and helping the community here.
I broke down two weeks ago on my 23 street glide in the middle of nowhere, 6 hours later I ended that day lol, it happens
What lithium battery would your recommend for a 2023 HD RG standard
I'm good with the OEM AGM battery it (24 RG) came with. Thanks for the warning!
u betcha.
Be glad you weren't on a M8 Softail. H-D engineer's made a simple battery swap as complex as can be.
I am so happy I can access the battery now compared to those M8 Softails.
Wow, I've used my lithium ion battery in my 14 SGS for many years in temps as high as 110 degrees F.

Hahaha. Thx for watching and commenting.

Was the battery original equipment on your 2024 bike?
I kind of question blaming the Lithium batteries. I have had two friends with 2024s who have had the same issue with the stock batteries. Both replaced under warrenty. I believe that they have a relay or module that possibly sticks or stays awake draining the batteries.

What does the Owners Manual state about what kind of battery to use?
There should be a class action lawsuit over these new Harleys.
