  • In 1996, Randy Gilson took out a bank loan to buy some abandoned property on the North Side. Using only his tip money from his job as a server, and the help of his friends and neighbors, he transformed the space into what is now known as “Randyland” - a bright oasis on the corner of Arch St. and Jacksonia Way. See what makes Randy tick in this segment from NextGeneration Fellow Andrew Klein.

I met Randy in 2002 on my first business trip to Pittsburgh while staying at the Westin Hotel downtown. Randy was a waiter in the restaurant and had the best customer service orientation of anybody I ever met. His positivity was incredible. I had invested in a brownstone in the Mexican War Streets with some associates in 2012 and was walking down Jacksonia after getting coffee at Commonplace Coffeehouse and saw this brightly painted house and wondered WTF? Randy was outside and I said, I know you, you were my waiter 10 years ago, best service ever, and he gave me the grand tour. Glad to see that he is UA-cam famous.
