I've found that all too many used thermos bottles that you get off ebay or flee markets are dead. The first thing that I do is fill them with boiling water and if the outside jacket doesn't remain at room temperature and starts to heat up after 2 or three minutes the vacuum has been compromised. They often look perfectly good but are useless at keeping any liquid warm or cold any better than a non insulated container. At that point they become a parts donor.
