@JesseCollngham Hi mate i have a white 2011 mercedes c class c220, I have a intermittent fault too. Where mines only showing me faults once the car warms up. It judders and jerks into gears (7g tronic auto) I also took my transmission ecu to ecutesting and had the same issue. They said my unit wasn't faulty either. But unfortunately for me one of there technicians broke and snapped a part of it and they glued it back on. I foolishly took the part back installed it with fresh mercedes gearbox oil and filters and gaskets and im still having the same issue I was before 😢 my car drives amazing when cold and doesn't miss a beat until it warms up then starts playing up. Luckily ecutesting have said they will replace my unit as it was damaged by them but I'm still not 100% sure even after that the will be fault free. Iv piled up quite a big list of parts from mercedes that I have replaced in last 2months since owning this car. 1part being a rear subframe that came with a bill of £3000 alone. 😮 unfortunately I can't afford a decent diagnostic tool like yours on the car (or mercedes) only fault code i keep getting on my carly device is "cannot communicate with the transmission control module" I'm kind of in the same boat with sleepless nights and continuing to be banging my head against the wall. Iv spent hours of my own time checking parts and cables but still no luck. Every person, company, and forums state the issues I'm having are the transmission conductor plate. But that's what ecutesting have apparently tested and confirmed it to be fit and no known issues. Hopefully you keep your chin and faith up to the fact someone else out the knows the answers we are looking for to help get both these cars back on track and running smoothly again. Good luck jesse and well done mate. Chin up, chest up and NEVER give up brother 💪🏻😁
Spark plugs could have gotten fouled from constantly starting it and stopping it… specially if it’s missing on cold. Over fuelling blacking the plug meaning the spark is weaker than what it once was. Usually driving it would clean them, but if it’s sat on the drive going no where and just starting and stopping, they will get fouled.
The loose spark plug makes me things it’s cracked the cylinder head, and the crack is making its way up the spark plug thread. Would explain only cold start aswell as the heat of the engine could expand and fill the crack enough for it to not misfire.
That’s complete bollocks. If any dealership tells you misfire is normal at cold start, then swerve them. Slight rough idle during cat heating maybe, depending on the quality standards of that OEM. What you have should not be normal. What is your Lambda reading during cold starts? The lambda sensors have to go closed loop very quickly. It’s the legislation in the EU.
Just turn the idle speed up slightly any mapping or diagnostic place can do it. If you add a bit of throttle when it’s misfiring and it goes away then raising the idle speed will sort it
This cars got me hooked more than the others, I’m proper intrigued to know what it is that’s wrong with it. Felt your pain in the last video with every start of the engine
Jesse, regardless of how bloody painful this has been for you, it will have taught you so much! Just a couple of years ago, you wouldn’t have ever thought you’d be getting right into the hands on work yourself!
Hi Jesse I admire your tenacity in getting this car fixed ? I used to own a 1980 VW scirocco every year I changed the plugs rotor arm distributor cap ht leads oil change and it never ever let me down, these computer cars for emissions are a joke they destroy the reliability of the cars today.
Jesse you need to fit genuine sensors when it’s a fuelling critical sensor as the cheap ones are garbage also different colour ones are different values the temp sensor made two noticeable differences your on the right track but I’d also be getting that Ecu back to standard configuration as well
This series of the Kia has been super interesting! A lot more than the quicker fixes with the other cars. Super informative stuff mate. Keep up the good work 👍🏼
Loving the series mate, But with all due respect these master techs who say that there are rare occasions on these cars that misfire or run rough on cold start have probably just convinced customers of this as they cant find the problem themselves I agree with all the comments stating its not normal Id look back at the temperature sensor and try and genuine one and plumb the coolant pipe in properly the one with the bolt in Hope you get to the bottom of it
Personally I think you’re fixing a fault that doesn’t need fixing. It’s a known miss fire something to do with ecu not been programmed for cold start. We used to have a choke and it did what it says on the tin lol it choked the engine over fuelling with very little air to help keep it running till up to temp.
I think a possible direction forwards now is to fit a wideband lambda (you'll need to drill a hole, weld a bung into the exhaust upstream of the cat - the hole can be plugged later with a blanking plug) and actually see from first principles, what is causing the misfire. I'd say its on the rich misfire limit (or lean misfire limit) during the open loop cold running. The fact that you swapped the plugs confirms this, the different set of plugs are more/less able to 'cope' with firing at the rich/lean limit. We used to get this all the time with fixing Mk1 Golf GTIs and other similar cars, they have K-Jetronic fuel injection and you'd be chasing your tail swapping components out, guessing all the time, but without knowing what's actually happening. The different coolant temp sensors could well have a different profile of resistance vs temp, which puts the engine close/into that misfire zone too. And the fact that its a non-original engine and half the stuff is from one and half from another, won't help! But until you have the solid data (eg from the wideband) you're guessing what's occurring inside the engine.
Although this car is a major headache for you, be reassured by the fact that all of these diagnostic videos on this car are no doubt the most interesting and your best content yet. 👍
I’m still surprised you’ve not asked to check if there’s any software updates for the ecu or if the software from the newer engine has been matched up as there may be some discrepancies. Also use genuine parts for your own sake. May as well have just sent it to Kia to get fixed in the first place. You’re just guessing constantly with no real diagnosis. Take it to a mapping company that does kia gt and have them sort it out
Remember this ECU is for the original engine and compoments. You have a different engine that probably needs the specific mapping for it. But you have all different components and variables in the mix. I'm no mechanic, but I'd imagine that is why it was px'ed in the first place. All I can think is to try a mapping for the engine replacement, and hope it ignores that there are other variables. Other that that remove that sensor that stopped the missfire, and move it on.
The problem is now worse since coolant temp replacement revert to genuine half of the parts you are fitting are of poor qaulity coolant temp sensor, airmass, lambda sensors always go for genuine only
I admire your determination to get this solved. Honestly if the car runs fine, it doesn’t have any code and even Kia is telling you that is normal, it might be true! Consider that this car is been sat for long, maybe just daily driving it will solve the problem! I would say just swap it with something else even if you do a little step back but at least you will have new content and finally you will sleep at night!
If that was me i would check everything that is not standard was put back to standard like a mapped out sensor. Of course it wont run right if you have mapped things out it has them sensors for a reason
I’m not a mechanic at all but I’ve know a bit about cars this may be a idea to thick the throttle housing ( or what’s it’s called because if it’s not giving throttle when misfiring then throttle might not be opening to let air into the engine causing a misfire on All cylinders Keep doing what your doing Jesse, you’ll get there someday
Put original map back on, not hard to get hold of an ori file to match ecu, if its got a sensor mapped out likely has codes removed from showing aswell
This miss will have started after running it with the temp sensor unplugged. The -40 degree temp would have over fuel like crazy, fouled the plugs and put raw unburnt fuel into the cat. The smell stopped after the fuel in the cat burnt off and the miss went when you replaced the fouled plugs.
@@markandrew552 Do you think it should have a AGM stop start battery in it too? Pretty sure that drivetec one that's in it is just a boggo lead battery, but low voltage causes all sorts of problems with modern stuff
@@marcpearson3955I've got this dilemma myself with a MK3 Seat Leon 1.6 TDI, battery was toast when test drove it, they had fitted a new battery only for me to discover a week later it was one of these crap drive tec batteries, I'm having cold start issues too, surely it can't be the battery? 🙄😂
I know you're frustrated fella. But I must confess this is great to watch. Your videos are my favourite at the minute to be in anticipation for. Keep on keeping on buddy..!
I think this may have been suggested already but have you checked the valves for carbon buildup? GDI engines are notorious for it and misfiring during cold starts is the main symptom. The injectors were filthy, the spark plug tips were fouled... and all that stuff is in the same area...
i suggested this maybe the problem. common for the gdi engines can cause exactly what is happening on cold start. i would have thought all the kia techs/kia themselves are aware of the problem. also common place with other brands with direct injection.
@ for the content not the thumbnail. The videos are good and you’re a good storyteller and presenter. Also the fact you’ve put in so much time and effort is insane.
The rotten egg smell can be caused by oil getting into the cat and being burned off. Its causes a build up of sulphuric gas which smells like rotten egg. Its causes would also cause all that smoke too.
Smoke seemed more like un burnt fuel because the spark plugs had probably got fouled from all the cold starts and rough idle without driving it to burn it off but the sulphur smell is probably more likely oil yeah
@sbrader97 It is unburnt fuel. Air intake wasn't tightened up after changing the sensor causing vacuum leak which would cause over fueling, multi cylinder misfires and fouled plugs.
Honestly, do you really believe people will be willing to trade cars with you at this value? Realistically, it could take weeks or even months to find someone interested in a swap at the higher price points. The momentum behind this idea seems to be losing steam, and it’s likely that this “train” will come to a halt sooner rather than later. If you’re looking for sustainable content creation, it might be worth considering alternative approaches or strategies. While this concept may have drawn some initial attention, its long-term viability seems questionable. Stop guessing Go to the diagnose Dan, it will be fantastic content and we are all looking forward to seeing the final result. Thanks for the hard work.
To me the randomness of the faults indicates something like a crap earth to the engine or ecu. Run a wire (jump start cable?) from engine block to chassis and see if it makes any difference. Oh, and get a full charge in the battery. This has got to be something simple.
Battery doesn’t even look like the right one either could be a voltage issue or earth strap as you say, had that before. But after this video of the same thing I’m bored and don’t want to see it again unless it’s fixed or being swapped
Not sure if this has been said or not, but when you released it was a different engine, did you check the coils are compatible with the engine itself, because you would of given the reg for the car but that would of been for factory engine. I might be well off with this theory.
I think the ngk sparkplugs are just struggling because they are burnt up so not sparking as efficiently after a clean up should be fine also because you haven’t had the car running it’s just been sat doing the odd coldstart 10 min drive should clean them up same with the cat probably just from not being driven for a while, hope you get to the bottom of it soon!
Rotten egg gas smell is due to the cat reacting to lean exhaust, it's a lean missfire, you said it's had the secondary O2 sensors mapped out, I would be looking at getting a stock ecu or remap, I had a remap issue on my VW where they set boost on all the time to turn off the EGR, this meant it shut the AC off as part of how VW mapped it, everything the tuner maps out can have an equal and sometimes opposite reaction
If it only switches to closed loop to adjust fueling etc once the O2 sensor is up to temp then maybe the heater is a bit fried in the heated O2 sensor itself n takes too long to warm up hence it only happening on first cold start, just a thought Jesse, hope you beat it, good luck
The way to test a blocked cat for the future is to take the O2 sensor out before the cat and run it with the sensor out. Just something you might find useful in the future. Definitely try this before doing anything else with it. I really don’t think that’s normal. Because why did it stop once you was messing with the temp sensor?
I said to replace the cat exhaust 2 video's back, in that i had the same problem with my astra. When my astra got damp in which it had been stood for days in the garage, especially in humid weather, the problem got worse, and the exhaust stank of rotten eggs much worser, and when i went out every day after that the misfire did not come back, and the exhaust hardly stank of rotten eggs, but when it was stood for days again, the same problem came back, but i cured the problem eventually by replacing the cat exhaust and the 02 sensor. Put a full sports exhaust on it, a new 02 sensor and get it remapped.
Could be if you have used the ngk iridium similar problem happens with the old Peugeot 206gti 180s the coil packs don’t like them and makes them run rough. Might be worth trying standard plugs rather than iridium.
So what I think you should do is check the throttle body check the spark plug wires put an ball scope camera inside the engine and see going on in there maybe wiring issue😮
Calvin has just bought a lovely blue Suzuki Liana, You have managed to repair the gearstick issue. Maybe you could do another deal with him ? The Kia is much younger, so perhaps he could throw in a packet of Oreos to sweeten the deal ?
The fact you said the rear o2 sensor has been mapped out, must mean this has had a remap? If so id revert it back to a standard map as i feel that could be your issue. These all suffer a bit of a cold start misfire to some extent, but i feel your map if not done well is making it far worse.
There’s no way that car is supposed to do that on idle. I worked for kia and sold a handful of Ceed GTs. None of them ever sounded like that on idle. And certainly not from having a twin exhaust! They sound more “sporty” for want of a better phrase, but that lumpy idle is defo a fault, and not normal! Best of luck fixing it mate. The Kia master tech at the Crewe dealership is pretty knowledgeable, that’s where I used to work back in 2016.
the problem is in the catalytic converter, it is cracked or the gasket at the back where it is screwed to the head, there is still a possibility that you have damaged orchards at the catalytic converter
I really admire your determination and effort trying to get this thing right. I just wonder 'why' ? Unless you really REALLY love the car, there are so many other much better options to waste your money on.
I don’t think it’s normal. I’ve ran a 2014 Pro Ceed Gt for nearly 4 years. It never missed a beat and was quiet on cold start and start up. With all due respect, I don’t think I would take that opinion from the person at the desk as gospel.
Same hapnd to me 2yrs ago. On my lexus ct. put ngk plugs in misfires instantly. Bought the genuine denso ones which wer cheaper and was perfect. Dont use ngk on cars use the orig ones
Your misery is making us happy! 😂 Joking mate! You've done wonders with this car. I still think you should get coil packs and spark plugs for this engine from the main dealer.
I have a ford fiesta 2009 ZS and it's idle fluctuates a lot on start to the point where it didn't sound normal. After a bit of research and asking other members of a fiesta group, apparently this is normal and a lot of fiestas just happen to have rough idles. Moral of the story, maybe it is just normal for a car to idle rough at first and get better after a couple of seconds
Cold start after cold start will foul your plugs bro. Unplugging the temp sensor would have made it run rich af too. Maybe just try drive it around for a bit.
You have some patience Jesse 😂, I think most of us would have driven it off a cliff by now. I think you just need to swap it for something of similar value or maybe even a slight step back, just so you keep going forward.
Jesse my dads got a 18 plate blue 🤣 Kia ceed 1.4 turbo gdi petrol which pops and bangs on cold start especially when reving on cold pops like crazy like it’s mapped in, his had a service at main dealer they’ve recommended a octane boost with every service I always questioned why but my dad wasn’t sure. His is the 140bhp I know yours is 1.6 but sounds very similar 🤦🏻♂️
If the engine has been swapped, it's pretty clear that it's possible the doesn't match up to it properly. Sack off the pissing about with sensors and get someone from Kia to fix the issue or a professional who has dealt with this sort of stuff before
Loving the series I don't know how you've had the patience. The bloody thing would have been set on fire with me. Although Calvin it would be nice if he rocked up with a replacement motor that has a few issues and did a switch with all his money 😂😂
fr hes got the ecu checked twice now and he was told theres no problems with it, hes just changing part after part and like you said its boring just take it to a kia garage, get it sorted and get rid of it. proper shit heap
I said the same thing this one was frustrating to watch jumping about all over the place doing the same thing he’s just done going oh look it misfires oh look it doesn’t oh look I fouled the plugs oh look it misfires it’s ok to be stuck on something but what’s took so long to release this video when it’s stuff that can be done in one day and no conclusion to it. Won’t watch if this carries on f it.
Lads 100% it’s getting a bit boring but imagine how he feels!! Anything anyone has been recommended he’s tried?! Any suggestions I’m sure he’s more than willing to consider. Try help rather than putting him down as I’m sure he wants to get this done more than any of us!
Nothing boring about these video's mate. Iv been enjoying them. Enjoy these tyres of videos more than simple fixes. You dont seem to have any idea's do you mate.
I wouldn't always trust what the dealer says. My last Audi was always serviced at the local franchise dealer until it was in for service and they called to tell me that I needed a new clutch until I pointed out that it was only 9 months since the last service where I authorised fitting a new clutch, they then said "oh, so we did, that's okay then, it must just need adjusting" Get it on the next boat to Amsterdam and ask Diagnose Dan to fix it :D

check the turbo compressor wheel. if its got play and not spinning on idle that will cause an exhaust blockage
I'll swap it for my wheelie bin. Only slight misfire but dealer said it's normal.
There is no way this is normal. Imagine going to a dealership to buy a brand new ceed Gt and it’s misfiring when you start it up, nobody would buy it.
I will take notice of what mine does in the morning as it will be a proper cold start.
Mate new plugs, maybe packs, and get it mapped, get cold start raised and if the cat is mapped out already,REMOVE IT LOL,or map it back in SORTED lol
If it only switches to closed loop to adjust fueling etc once the O2 sensor is up to temp then maybe the heater is a bit fried in the heated O2 sensor itself n takes too long to warm up hence it only happening on first cold start, just a thought Jesse, hope you beat it, good luck
First thing is put fuel in it lol and put that old temp sensor back in, I would fit a new genuine one, a lot of pattern parts are wa%k at best
Mate for someone who taught themselves you are exceptionally smart. I would get the cat sorted mate definitely
Check the screenwash management belt
I'd plan to get rid now mate, sorry you've had to keep chasing your tail on this one!
Could be if you have used the ngk iridium similar problem happens with the old Peugeot 206gti 180s the coil packs don’t like them and makes them run rough. Might be worth trying standard plugs rather than iridium.
I just want to see this Kia fixed! The satisfaction 🙌
I have never watched a UA-cam video with sooooo many adverts only to come back from an ad break to a channel sponsor ad. Too much
So what I think you should do is check the throttle body check the spark plug wires put an ball scope camera inside the engine and see going on in there maybe wiring issue😮
Calvin has just bought a lovely blue Suzuki Liana, You have managed to repair the gearstick issue. Maybe you could do another deal with him ? The Kia is much younger, so perhaps he could throw in a packet of Oreos to sweeten the deal ?
Wild educated guess, soundls like its backfiring abit more than it should.(possibly a catylitic converter issue) hence why it struggles to stay alive.
Im only 2 mins into the video, but that ecu has been opened before, the warranty void sticker does not come on the ecu as standard. 🤔
I would actually be tempted to daily drive this for a while and see if it clears up, see if any other clues develop, etc.
Same hapnd to me 2yrs ago. On my lexus ct. put ngk plugs in misfires instantly. Bought the genuine denso ones which wer cheaper and was perfect. Dont use ngk on cars use the orig ones
Your misery is making us happy! 😂
Joking mate! You've done wonders with this car.
I still think you should get coil packs and spark plugs for this engine from the main dealer.
What would be interesting to see is if you could MAP the temperature to trick the ECU thinks the engine is hot while doing an actul cold start.
Wasn't 'sorting' the ecu one of the first things you did ?!? Plus, which engine is it for - original or replacement ?
We said this problem in 2nd video
I have a ford fiesta 2009 ZS and it's idle fluctuates a lot on start to the point where it didn't sound normal. After a bit of research and asking other members of a fiesta group, apparently this is normal and a lot of fiestas just happen to have rough idles.
Moral of the story, maybe it is just normal for a car to idle rough at first and get better after a couple of seconds
Remap the ecu. Get rid of cold start
Hats off to this guy man. Content at its best 👍
Least I know never to buy a Kia now 😂😂 you done your absolute best Jesse. Can’t wait to see what’s next ❤
Cold start after cold start will foul your plugs bro. Unplugging the temp sensor would have made it run rich af too. Maybe just try drive it around for a bit.
Change sparks and coils to oem and take it a good long run. Also maybe change the egr as amount of stop starts will clog it up
Jesse glad you’re keeping going with this one. It’s good content. Kia should have some minerals and offer to fix it for you free !!!
Really enjoying the content Jesse; after all that I cannot believe it...your efforts have been fantastic!! Time for a swap I think if we can get one.
9:05 sweat you have loads of diagnostic machines love the vids aswell
Been watching these religiously was watching them when I was on holiday in France back in August 😂
You have some patience Jesse 😂, I think most of us would have driven it off a cliff by now. I think you just need to swap it for something of similar value or maybe even a slight step back, just so you keep going forward.
Each video he gets an arm work out with the movements 😂
Jesse my dads got a 18 plate blue 🤣 Kia ceed 1.4 turbo gdi petrol which pops and bangs on cold start especially when reving on cold pops like crazy like it’s mapped in,
his had a service at main dealer they’ve recommended a octane boost with every service I always questioned why but my dad wasn’t sure.
His is the 140bhp I know yours is 1.6 but sounds very similar 🤦🏻♂️
When the engine was swapped, was the ECU swapped to pair with the new engine as well?
^
@@ashleyd1386thought this was checked? 🙈 but now not sure 🤷🏻♂️
Surely when it was tested for maps etc....? This would of come up
When you bought spark plugs did you give reg or chassis. I think you have a ProCeed engine that the last owner prob gave up on too
Have you tried checking compression on all cylinders when the engine is completely cold? If compression is fine it could be a timing issue
Starting 2 think wen u gt to the root of this problem it won't b a supercar u need it will b a super hover car
It take it for mapping and adjust the fuelling slightly on 4
If the engine has been swapped, it's pretty clear that it's possible the doesn't match up to it properly.
Calvin offered to take car back
@chrisknowles2112 missed that
Love your commitment and effort you put into your cars and videos 👍
This is getting boring now put the doggy sensor back in and move it on asap
fr hes got the ecu checked twice now and he was told theres no problems with it, hes just changing part after part and like you said its boring just take it to a kia garage, get it sorted and get rid of it. proper shit heap
I like them 😂
Definitely the most anticipated video series atm 👍🏻
I wouldn't always trust what the dealer says. My last Audi was always serviced at the local franchise dealer until it was in for service and they called to tell me that I needed a new clutch until I pointed out that it was only 9 months since the last service where I authorised fitting a new clutch, they then said "oh, so we did, that's okay then, it must just need adjusting"
Get it on the next boat to Amsterdam and ask Diagnose Dan to fix it :D
