Hey Shubham!!...Can I get your email-id please? It would be really helpful if you can help me with some info about NUS as I am planning to join there for a postdoc position.
It is great to see you finally here. was following you since your sem3 updates, and we feel connected to the journey. I'll be applying for PhD this Dec. 2023 and hope it works out! Also, since I did my first research internship in grav waves as well (using MCMC methods), I wont mind if you could go into a bit detail as to how was your path into choosing this as your PhD topic and sharing about this field a little with the audience. Mainly, we can have a video of how your research interest evolved, what all internships, work experience, society, etc. you did which may help many of us in our journey as well Also, I just saw NUS is an anagram to SNU.
@@ShubhamKejriwal It's my pleasure, bro. I'm much inspired from your videos. From when you talked of when people were ill speaking of you studying physics, and all. But you eventually became triumphant, and all those nay sayers are proven futile! Keep up the great work, bro!
Hi! I'm glad I found your videos. I'll be starting my PhD at NUS in January 2025. I'm applying for the PGPR hostel like you. Did you request for early check-in?
@@gbdadol yes, I arrived 2 days earlier. If you already have an offer from PGP, getting an early check-in should be relatively straightforward. Hope you have a great time in NUS!
@@ShubhamKejriwal Thank you! I hope to get the offer this week. Are you still staying at PGPR? I've read that you have to find another place after the end of the school year.
Hope so too! Unfortunately I had to move out this summer after 1.5 years in PGP, so I currently reside off campus. Housing at PGP is quite competitive, even for grad students. I believe there are newer residence buildings coming up in 2025, so maybe that should ease the load. It is always a hit or miss though.
I got an offer. Unfortunately, it's for a Studio Apartment Type II. I plan to just get it and find a cheaper place after the semester. I have a question though. Do you know if the rental rates for the Studio Apartment already include the utilities? Type II is Non-AC. I plan to maximize the kitchen, but I'm not sure if I have to pay extra for the electricity.
there are two 'hostels' i.e. university accommodations for Graduate Students: PGPR and UTown. Both have canteens and restaurants in their vicinity, however vegetarian food, especially Indian vegetarian food (something I know and love) is hard to come by. There are still some options in and around campus but of course they are not the cheapest. You'll probably end up making your own food if being a vegetarian is a strict limitation, otherwise the sky is the limit! As per cost of living, refer to this: nus.edu.sg/osa/student-services/hostel-admission/graduate/hostel-rates Click on the pdf with 'MOE-subsidised graduate program' if you expect a graduate fellowship, otherwise click on the other option. Hope this helps.
Heyey thanks for the video! I just got accepted as a master student for the jan intake and looking for accomodation. Could i know how you looked for and picked where ur staying? (Ps. is ur room in Utown or outside the campus bc I heard the hostels and dorms are for ug students)
Hello sir.. I watch the full content of this video you made. It was very informative as I'm targeting NUS for my PhD. You mentioned that you are there for your PhD in gravitational waves. Sir i want to know about the in-campus accommodation. I guess you mentioned PGP hostel. Generally for graduate students, getting a hostel is not easy, like according to some video vlogs, the students have to enroll in clubs and gather points so that they can get in-campus accommodation. I want to know like is this the same for PhD students as well, like getting points to get a room! I'm searching for this information but I don't even have a clue😅. I hope that you can help me by taking out time from your busy schedule. Thank you so much for this video.
As a Ph.D. student, you get a priority in accommodation. That doesnt mean every Ph.D. student gets on campus accommodation, some have to find it outside, but a lot of Ph.D.s do get alotted a hostel room, either in PGP or UTown. As a Ph.D., you dont have to participate in club activities to get a room, that system is mostly for undergrads. Do note however that even as a PhD, you get accommodation in campus for a maximum of 4 sems, after which you have to find accommodation outside.
@@ShubhamKejriwal Thank you so much sir for this valuable information. I exactly wanted to know this points. I hope that I can met you there at NUS and thank you😊. Once again, thank you so much.
Hey , I am a new student joining NUS but I haven’t got the accomodation ready yet because college has provided me only non ac one which I am not comfortable with , can you help me to find any other student accommodation nearby
Most international Ph.D. students affiliated with NUS get the NUS Research Scholarship (NUSRS) worth 2700 SGD or the SINGA scholarship worth 2700 SGD + Settlement allowance. You may also be granted a scholarship from your department, specially in Medicine or Comp. Sci., or from your lab in case of astar scholarships, which may be variable. You can checkout the scholarships here: nusgs.nus.edu.sg/scholarships/
Hey Shubham congratulations on your achievements so far, just discovered your channel while I was looking for GRE prep videos, and I want to say thank you for putting up all the informational stuff. I understand that you must be busy with your PhD work, I just want to know if you ever applied for SINGA scholarship or know anyone who has.
I am an NUS Research Scholarship holder, SINGA is relatively more competitive. Some of my friends are SINGA scholars, but are mostly associated with the astar experimental labs, and not with NUS directly.
Sometimes. Undergrads have more options (residential colleges) but they also have to gain more extracurricular credits (something called CC) to ensure a room on campus. Clearly, I am not an undergrad, so it's probably more useful to check the uni website.
Hi, yes, I think spouses are allowed. There are married apartments available and anyone with a spouse can only apply for married apartment arrangement. As far as the visa requirements for a spouse goes, im not too certain, you will need to talk to the immigration checkpoint authority of singapore and NUS graduate office directly
Hey, yes, there are a lot of online resources available for this. You can checkout apps like propertyguru or 99.co for some good deals. Facebook marketplace might also be helpful. General advise is to stay away from Carousel though. All the best!
I have a question. I applied for the NUS research scholarship; if I get it, should I pay for weekly accommodation, or does this scholarship cover this expense?
Typically 1st month's expenses, including the hostel fees and living costs, along with flight tickets, visa, etc. Your first month's stipend gets credited along with the second month stipend later, so it technically gets covered.
Only major spendings are flight tickets, and first month settlement/living expenses. You also have to pay for your acoommodation in advance. A total of about 2 lakhs rupees (very conservative estimate). From the second month onwards you are on a monthly stipend which is more than enough to cover rent and daily expenses, so virtually no cost. :)
Hello? You have an amazing sister for every time you feel lonely❤️😂 Also... Would you now change your mind about buying me flight tickets to Singapore?
