I groom my 2 Portuguese Water Dogs but always hated to do the nails because I once hit the quick.. I studied your videos, purchased the Dremmel and the recommended tip and what a difference it makes. After 8 weeks of weekly nail trims, the dogs look great. I was treating daily with the Dremmel when they would offer their paw on command and now they come running when I turn it on. Thank you!
I own Amazing Dog (a dog training company) in Texas and have dremeled my own dogs nails for years BUT YOUR videos are the BEST videos on black toenails I have ever watched!! THANK YOU!! YOUR VIDEOS ARE GAMECHANGERS!!
Finally!!!! I have 3 dogs and one with light nails and two with black. And the older two have long quicks that I’m trying to recede. Now I know how to get closer without hurting them! I’ve never quicken them, but it’s because I’m too scared to go shorter! Now I know how far I can go and still be safe. I can’t take them to the groomers because I’ve tried and they said they won’t behave. They will let me do it with help from a family member. Now I can finally do it right and get them where they need to be! You’re AMAZING!!!!!! No one has ever showed the quicks as well as you! Or how to remove the helmet! I didn’t know the quick was more on the bottom and not centered either! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😂😂😂
Thank you. I was one of the recent viewers requesting this video. I knew of the circle on the bottom of the black nail. We trim lightly once a week or every 5 days if possible. His nails grow fast and are thick so have been impossible to get them short. Plus I have to bait him with a healthy spoonful of peanut butter smeared inside a bowl to distract him. What has been a game changer is focusing on removing the helmet. I started dremelling the helmet of his nails 2 weeks ago after one of your other videos. Removal of the helmet is taking some time for us to get used to, but definitely gives me hope. I am noticing improvement in the overall shape and length of his nails already. Removing the helmet makes the nails less thick and easier to see and handle. I do believe his quick will recede steadily and we will eventually get his nails to a normal length, maybe even shift trimming to once every other week. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Well my dog groomer Has said that I will not try this on my dog. He refuses. I am frustrated and I need to find someone that can do this. I don't know where to start, maybe at a vet. Which could be pricey. This is where it would be great to have a husband lol to Be my helper.. No I would be his helper.
@@georgetteetourneaux3350 My dog groomer I've been going to for year and a 1/2 or more And he says he will not try. Makes me mad I have not been back to him and now I need to find a new one
My 9 month old female Rhodesian Ridgeback was very skittish of having her nails trimmed. A groomer we went to (our first) suggested using a muzzle even though there were 3 of us trying to keep her still (she’s 85 lbs). The muzzle seemed to calm her right down as well as protecting us from nips and protecting the dog from trying to sniff too close to the Dremel. Your video has taught me how to trim on my own and we’ve made tons of progress but I still use a muzzle even though my dog is now accustomed to the trimming process. It has an immediate calming effect on her. Hopefully this tip might help someone else who is struggling to keep their dog calm while trimming.
I am finishing watching this video and Wow...this was a crazy improvement to the length of the first dog's nails......I've never seen anything like it! My dogs even after going to a groomer would still have long sharp nails.
You have absolutely the best demos for closeups to see what the nail should look like through the process. Most videos have the technique, but not the close ups to show us what it should look like. Many thanks! Now if my Shih Tzu (with black nails) would just sit there nicely for the whole nail trim, it would be great. Currently a work in progress... Tolerates 3 of 4 paws for short dremeling. Many thanks again!!

Wow, what a difference! Short nails are so important, especially if you do any dog sports. My boy goes in for surgery on Thursday so am having them cut and cauterize the nails while he's under. Such a difference when they get them as short as possible. Much better starting point after that. The dewclaws are already removed but would have them remove them too if they weren't - one less nail to cut plus no chance of getting it ripped off in the field either. Hope that helps.
Thanks soooo much for a great vid. I've decided I need to take more ownership of my dogs black toenails and this vid was so informative I really feel like I can be successful at this now!
Very few groomers actually work on nails---or maybe my dogs are so wiggly they can't do it properly, but in any case, I can't seem to get anyone to do it properly, with the consequence that the quick gets longer so they're even more reluctant to trim close & it just gets worse & worse. I wish every groomer would watch this video about 10 times!I guess the only solution is to just keep taking them in for trims every 2 weeks! Thank you for being so clear about the proper way to do this!
Ooh im so glad i now know what and how to look for. Ill practise. I wish more People knew this. Not every one has money for the groomer, and the vet 2 times a year isnt enough. I need to find a grinding nail file like that. Ill play with his feet an nails a lot with a treat or toy to make him less reactive when i have to work on them. Thanks ! Greetings from Belgium
I use the "DREMEL Micro (8050-N/18)" for trimming my Aussie's nails about once every 2 weeks for maintenance. It has a built in light! I use the 4th, out of 5, speeds. BUT... I must make sure that I don't leave the grinder touching/grinding the nail for more than a second, as it can make the nail tip very hot. Touch the tip of the nail right after you've Dremeled it, and that will tell you if you are using the right amount of time against the nail. If nail tip gets too hot, the dog will pull back suddenly (due to pain) and you'll have do some intervention to rebuild trust. Also, a tap-tap-tap technique against the nail rather than prolonged grinding will avoid overheating issues entirely. It might take a tad more time, but all worth it. Short, frequent sessions with copious surprise treats makes your pup come running to you when they see/hear a Dremel :)
What bit or bits? I use a Dremel #408 aluminum oxide 1/2” sanding drum for general and Dremel #932 3/8” finishing stone with a concave tip to round them off. Absolutely agree with your heat/friction technique. I think vibration and friction heat are the main things that adversely effect a dog’s acceptance to trimming.
@@onexray10 I use the diamond-coated nail grinder bits- 120 grit & those things don’t get hot; they’re terrific. They’re compatible with Dremels. They have a polishing “bowl” up top & I don’t have to worry about hair getting caught. Amazon has them diamondg (one brand but there’s more choices) rotary nail grinder bits❤️
great video!! my two great danes both have black nails and i often end up catching their quicks when i trim them. with this information ill definitely be able to trim their nails without cutting their quicks!! thank you!!
Perfect! Thank you for the close up visuals of each side you are working on. Reassuring to see it’s not just snip bottom tip and done. To see such a clear visual, with your explanation of what to look for, is soo good!. My chihuahua has been so wiggly with her paws whenever I pause to see my progress. I bought a hanging grooming hammock. Game changer on the TIME it takes, like an extra pair of hands. Now I have no wiggle and clear visual of her nails as I dremel. That dew claw tho! So difficult to get the right angle and grip on tiny paws. Lol.
@@anneg8319 it is very possible. It would be a matter of finding one big enough (I’m sure they’re commercially available) and having a good place to “hang” the hardware from. Any hardware you use must be rated for the weight.
I haven't looked up a single dog video in ages, yet this popped up on my feed. I never thought (duh) to look up online how to best grind a dogs nails down, yet my dogs nails are way too long (and damn thick)! Vets always tell me they are too long to cut/grind, they'll be fine (wtf?!?!). I grind them myself, but not often enough and my dog seems to hate it. Watching this video was extremely useful on how best to work "around" the quick to work it down over time. My dog is going to love you!!! I already do :)
Your dog hates it because the claws, not nails, are sensitive, how would you like a power grinder rotating your sensitive parts? They chew at them when long enough, and layers shed off, looking like a hollow claw unless they eat it [keratone source], Just like every wild specxies with claws, they shed layers, and ckaws are used to grip, fight, climb, run, nails are to keep the finger end from being floppy and not being able to grip, quite different. SWtop putting human values and fantasies onto dogsm every dog knows what it is to be a dog a million times better than you do. Learn from dogs, don't assume superiority.
Wow this is a wonderful video and I have also watched some of your others. Had an incident today where my lab pulled away at the clip and the quick has been bleeding all day! I really want to be invest in a Dremel and be diligent about trimming bc she really gets nervous on slick floors when they get too long. I'm so grateful for your videos and they make a lot of sense!
wow! I enjoyed watching your video. I have a part dane and lab. His nails are black. I did clip his quick. Now is scared when i try to clip them. But the dremel is something I will buy. Thanks
I had a pair of Miller Forge clippers that look like the ones in this clip. Thought they worked okay…until I bought a pair of Hirota clippers. About 3500¥ here in Japan. This was about $30 when I bought them. They are just so much sharper and are extremely well made. Haven’t used them in a long time because I started using a Dremel. Now I do my dog’s nails about once a week, sometimes more often. I find the best time to do his nails is when he’s taking a nap, just snoozing. I pick up a foot, touch it up a bit, takes only about a minute or less, and walk away. Then I just remember I did that paw and I come back later and do another. Sometimes it’s just 10 minutes later and he still snoozing. Every once in a while I’ll get some treats and lay down and do all four paws. Much easier than trimmers and much less likely to cause bleeding.
This is awesome. Thank you! Your demo dog was so good. My rescue boy still freaks out when we try to trim his nails. He's such a good happy boy otherwise. Went to vet after giving him anxiety medicine and they couldn't do it. Now will increase anxiety medicine dose at next visit and give to another try. At least he has many acres of woods to run free on which keeps his nails a fairly reasonable length. But they do scratch us and our floor and pull our carpet. But we love him. Great demo!
It is amazing how the black dog's toes were all drawn out when the nails were still long and how those toes go back to "cat" feet when the nails are short.
Your video is so very helpful. Thanks for sharing this, the visual (those closeups, yes!) and your explanations really help us understand, Good Dog Grooming!
I saw your vid a while ago. Best one I've seen that clearly shows what the tip of the quick looks like!!!! One has to see a clear example to know what to look for! Well done! I also bought a pair of the Millers Forge clipper you are using in this vid. They definitely have a higher quality edge that others I've owned. But it's a shame they don't improve the red 'grip'! It slides around and off and really ruins an otherwise great product. I think I'm going to toss them, clean and rough up the handles and try putting on a couple layers of heat shrink tube. Certainly can't be worse than the stock wet noodle grips! LOL!
What a good dog & a good groomer. The patience is evident on both your parts. I've been thinking about getting another dog & since it's been a while since I did a doggo pedicure, this was so helpful. Thanks! 🐾🐾
Best video I have seen , I love how you explain the quick. I didn’t know that a Dremel could hurt Them same as clippers. I would like to know brand of Dremel you are using. I have a $40 pair, they don’t seem to grind like those. I won’t try clipping, don’t have the nerve, thanks to you I now know I have to be careful grinding as well. Mine doesn’t work as well as yours. I’m thinking it’s a good thing for my 2 year old Chihuahua, Ollie
Well, I’m not particularly brand-loyal, but my rotary tool is a Dremel MiniMite. The Dremel 7300 PT is equivalent. I also like the HyperTough cordless rotary tool from Walmart. It has a light on the end which can be helpful. I’m planning a video explaining how to choose a dremel but until then those are all good options.
Great video! I’m writing a blog on the importance of nail trimming for maintaining health and well-being in our dogs on my website (I do canine massage) and just wanted to ask permission to link your UA-cam videos as they explain the HOW TO much more clearly than I could 😊 and leaving people hanging with just the WHY without solutions is not my intention.

You make the very best videos. Closeups are fantastic. I have begun to watch how you position your arms to get the best grip on the paws, because I have had trouble with my technique. Looking forward to the grinder bits comparison. I’ve had sanding tubes and two different metal ones. All are way toooo slow. And the Diamagroove is very expensive.
This is the best tutorial I've ever found on how to find (and not nick!) the quick while encouraging the quick to recede. Thank you so much for sharing! I'm going to have to check out your other nail trimming videos that you've shared in your description. Speaking of your description, it looks like Amazon is no longer carrying the dremel model you use and is recommending a newer model -- looking at the specs of each, do you think the newer model may work as well?
Remember not to hold the dremel on there for more then a second it acts like an electric efile you will burn there little toes! Hold it on your nail when practicing so you know what I mean, it hurts very badly
Thanks for recommending this video I enjoyed it. But I will say Rocky had a lot to say about your video. He could hear the Dremel and the dogs barking in your video and he was not having anything to do with it. Bijou couldn’t have cared less, my guess is because I did her nails earlier tonight so she knew she was safe. In fact I’m charging my Dremel now it almost died before I finished the last nail.
I NEVER CLIPPED HIM, and the nails are short that they don't touch the ground. Every 2 weeks I take my Husky / German shepherd on asphalt parking lot and make him chase the ball 10 times.
Yeah, I did that with my last golden retriever. My house is on a cul-de-sac and so I would just take him outside and let him ‘do his name’ for a while a few times a week. White marks all over the pavement. But the real reason that I didn’t trim his nails was that he didn’t like it. I didn’t get him until he was six months old and he had food aggression at that time. The only time I tried to trim him he ‘exposed his teeth’. Other than that he was an extremely gentle and friendly dog so I just decided that I would let the groomer do it a couple of times I took him a year and the rest of the time the asphalt would do the trick. But with my new golden I got him at eight weeks and almost immediately started grinding his nails. Now he’s used to it and the best time is when he’s snoozing. If I only do one paw he hardly wakes up.
There’s often at least some level of desensitization that needs to take place in order for a dog to tolerate nail clipping and dremeling. I have a video about desensitization: ua-cam.com/video/LKS5FYVf_Lo/v-deo.html but the gist is you want your training sessions to be way more positive than negative. If this means shorter sessions, that’s ok. There are dogs that can only handle having one nail done in a session… so in that case I would do one nail a day every day for a while… keeping the session as positive as possible with some kind of high value reward. Eventually you should be able to move up to 2 nails per session… and slowly grow from there. Hope that helps!
Hi! Just found your channel! Love this vid! What color does it look like right before the quick of lighter nails? Do you have a video with ligjt nail Dremeling? Thank you for you wonderful vid!
Hmm on lighter nails I would say it’s… beige? It’s basically a different texture and shade from the surrounding nail. Similar to the black nail situation except it’s light colors instead of dark. Jump to 7:32 for the demo in this vid: ua-cam.com/video/TQegYewi1TA/v-deo.html
Questions: 1. What exact dremel bit is that? 2. Will the vein/quick lengthen on a long nail or is it always a set distance? 3. Can you “train” a quick to be shorter with more frequent trimmings? Great technique btw. I’ll try it.
1. DiamaGroove! I have 2 vids that will help explain this bit: ua-cam.com/video/HRmxHql1T7Q/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/hlz33gbGqW0/v-deo.html 2. Yes, the quick can get longer, especially on “neglected” nails that are overdue for a trim. 3. Absolutely. Here’s one of my videos on quick receding: ua-cam.com/video/1cr52MiflSM/v-deo.html Thanks for watching!!
Wondering if you can keep the bit on the nail for so long when using sandpaper. I’ve always kept the dremel moving quickly b/c it gets hot. I believe you are using diamagroove, and it doesn’t heat like sandpaper.
Great video. I always wondered how some people got their dogs nails so short but I have obviously been doing it wrong. Even my vet never got my dogs nails short enough. my Dremel is not a very good one. Yours works great, what kind is it?
I use a dremel 7300PT or dremel minimite. Those are equivalent models for all intents and purposes. There are links in the video description if that helps. There are tons of other good options out there, even some with a light on the end to improve visibility… hope you find something you like! (Eventually I’ll make a video comparing different dremel options!)
Here are 3 videos I made depending on the size of your dog: Holds for dremeling a small dog’s nails: ua-cam.com/video/QWdb28nwDqc/v-deo.html Holds for dremeling a big dog’s nails: ua-cam.com/video/v4O-dBBYt1Q/v-deo.html Holds for dremeling a tiny dog’s nails: ua-cam.com/video/nyBkIFo0qo0/v-deo.html
Yes! The DiamaGroove is an expensive bit specifically for doing dogs’ nails. It’s $150 but it’s the best out there. Sandpaper bits work absolutely fine though! There are also more affordable metal bits. I have a video in the works where I compare available metal bits… for now, here’s my DiamaGroove vid: ua-cam.com/video/HRmxHql1T7Q/v-deo.html

Very nice info on heat and technique. Thank you! Getting ready to do my (/my ex-roommate's?) dog's nails for the first time and they are long 😬
@@onexray10 I use the diamond-coated nail grinder bits- 120 grit & those things don’t get hot; they’re terrific. They’re compatible with Dremels. They have a polishing “bowl” up top & I don’t have to worry about hair getting caught.
Amazon has them diamondg (one brand but there’s more choices) rotary nail grinder bits❤️
Fantastic. Thank you so much for the lesson. Do you go to all of the professional dog groomer pages and contradict them or just this one?
great video!! my two great danes both have black nails and i often end up catching their quicks when i trim them. with this information ill definitely be able to trim their nails without cutting their quicks!! thank you!!
So glad it was helpful!! 🐶💙
Perfect! Thank you for the close up visuals of each side you are working on. Reassuring to see it’s not just snip bottom tip and done. To see such a clear visual, with your explanation of what to look for, is soo good!. My chihuahua has been so wiggly with her paws whenever I
pause to see my progress. I bought a hanging grooming hammock. Game changer on the TIME it takes, like an extra pair of hands. Now I have no wiggle and clear visual of her nails as I dremel. That dew claw tho! So difficult to get the right angle and grip on tiny paws. Lol.
Oh yeah, dew claws are a whole video in and of themselves! (Eventually!) Thanks for watching!!
Hanging grooming hammock. Wonder if that would work with my lab...?
@@anneg8319 it is very possible. It would be a matter of finding one big enough (I’m sure they’re commercially available) and having a good place to “hang” the hardware from. Any hardware you use must be rated for the weight.
Thanks. I'll look into it.
You make it look easy (and possible for me). Thank you!!!
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!!
@@petersimmons3654 I don't know who or what you're responding to 😂
Wow this is a wonderful video and I have also watched some of your others.
Thanks
Thats a huge help! Seems that I was dremmeling the wrong way :D Thank you
Appreciate this video I am a new dog owner and his nails are dark.. very informative
Great demo!
That was one great lesson! Thank you!!
Thank you!!
Great informative video. Thank you so much
It is amazing how the black dog's toes were all drawn out when the nails were still long and how those toes go back to "cat" feet when the nails are short.
LOL!
That’s an amazing idea and I think if someone designed clippers like what you’re describing they would be the best in the biz!!
@@GoodDogGrooming Heat shrink tube is easy to get and you can just use a lighter to shrink it.
Do you have the standard or medium grit diamagroove boxer?
Fantastic video, thank-you!
Mine is the standard grit. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing this
Thank you so much for showing how to do! The best video ever!
What a good dog & a good groomer. The patience is evident on both your parts.
I've been thinking about getting another dog & since
it's been a while since I did a doggo pedicure, this was so helpful. Thanks! 🐾🐾
Your video was awesome! My dog’s black nails have intimidated me from trying to cut them myself. Thank you for your demonstration!
Best video I have seen , I love how you explain the quick. I didn’t know that a Dremel could hurt
Them same as clippers.
Thanks so much. Very helpful.
Yes please! What’s your website/blog called? I’d love to take a look! Feel free to link my videos, I appreciate it!
@@GoodDogGrooming Thank you, I appreciate the time and effort you have put in making these videos. My website is www.k9mobilemassage.com.au and i will link my blog post here as soon as I have my hubby edit it for me lol ( I totally get to a point where I can't see my own errors and need fresh eyes )
@@nicoleashton5842 I just read it! Thanks that was so awesome!! It’s been a goal of mine to have other people like my videos enough to share them without my prompting… thanks for making that a reality! 🐾💙
Thank you so much
You make the very best videos.
Thanks so much!! Just in case the grit you’re using is causing issues, here’s my “which grit” video: ua-cam.com/video/GFvgunAsneo/v-deo.html
Thank you for the instructions. First clear video on how and why! Any tips for left handlers by chance?
This is the best tutorial I've ever found on how to find (and not nick!) the quick while encouraging the quick to recede. Thank you so much for sharing! I'm going to have to check out your other nail trimming videos that you've shared in your description.
Speaking of your description, it looks like Amazon is no longer carrying the dremel model you use and is recommending a newer model -- looking at the specs of each, do you think the newer model may work as well?
Great video thanks for the tips
I like that grinding wheel. I’d like one but those are pricey enough that I have to consider that the sandpaper drums work okay.
Nice job u helped me
Thank you
Loved the video, I would have like to know what attachment you are using with the Dremel
You are amazing…it is so scary just looking at you and the Dog is so so good. Wow! My Mya would never be able to stand this
Thank you for this!
Great demo. I wish there were some still shots of what you showed us, there was too much motion to see what you're pointing at.
Wish me luck!
Thanks for reminding me, I’ve been meaning to put together a video that’s basically just a slideshow of close up nail pics!!
Great video
Thanks!
Appreciated, thanks
Poor sweet dog been not cared for obviously. I hope so much this beautiful dog gets a new safe loving forever home soon.
❤️🇺🇸😇🕊😇🇺🇸❤️
Remember not to hold the dremel on there for more then a second it acts like an electric efile you will burn there little toes! Hold it on your nail when practicing so you know what I mean, it hurts very badly
Oh God…why Im getting so anxious 😂
Thanks for recommending this video I enjoyed it. But I will say Rocky had a lot to say about your video. He could hear the Dremel and the dogs barking in your video and he was not having anything to do with it. Bijou couldn’t have cared less, my guess is because I did her nails earlier tonight so she knew she was safe. In fact I’m charging my Dremel now it almost died before I finished the last nail.
I hear lots of people tell me their dogs do NOT like my videos! Lol
My husky mix’s dew claw alw be gettin me tho
I did the same thing with my last lab mix untilmhe got to old to run the nails down. Then he had to be retrained for safe nail trims..
We did that with my old man before he couldn't run anymore. Now he's 13 and I have to trim them.
True. He is young, healthy, and runs. Trimming is not necessary for now. He will get old, and I will have to use a dremel.
Nice video
Best vid ever!
Wbat dremmel is that? Its AMAZING!
Yeah, that's all well and good WITH A PUP THAT ISN'T SCARED CRAZY by the e clippers! What if a person has to work FAST!!?
Another great video!! Well done!!!!!
Excellent viedo.
Thanks Sharon!! 🐶💕
Questions:
1. What exact dremel bit is that?
2. Will the vein/quick lengthen on a long nail or is it always a set distance?
3. Can you “train” a quick to be shorter with more frequent trimmings?
Great technique btw. I’ll try it.
Nvrmnd just saw your video on it. 😊
1. DiamaGroove! I have 2 vids that will help explain this bit: ua-cam.com/video/HRmxHql1T7Q/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/hlz33gbGqW0/v-deo.html
2. Yes, the quick can get longer, especially on “neglected” nails that are overdue for a trim.
3. Absolutely. Here’s one of my videos on quick receding: ua-cam.com/video/1cr52MiflSM/v-deo.html
Thanks for watching!!
thanks!!!
Wondering if you can keep the bit on the nail for so long when using sandpaper. I’ve always kept the dremel moving quickly b/c it gets hot. I believe you are using diamagroove, and it doesn’t heat like sandpaper.
Awesome
Nice! What dremmel tool are you using? The ones I have used takes forever to trim!
Well behaved dog.
🐾❤️🐾
Great video. I always wondered how some people got their dogs nails so short but I have obviously been doing it wrong. Even my vet never got my dogs nails short enough. my Dremel is not a very good one. Yours works great, what kind is it?
I use a dremel 7300PT or dremel minimite. Those are equivalent models for all intents and purposes. There are links in the video description if that helps. There are tons of other good options out there, even some with a light on the end to improve visibility… hope you find something you like! (Eventually I’ll make a video comparing different dremel options!)
Wondering if you could show how to approach the dog. Do I stand behind the dog, beside the dog? Where do I put my arms while trying to trim nails?
Here are 3 videos I made depending on the size of your dog: Holds for dremeling a small dog’s nails: ua-cam.com/video/QWdb28nwDqc/v-deo.html Holds for dremeling a big dog’s nails: ua-cam.com/video/v4O-dBBYt1Q/v-deo.html Holds for dremeling a tiny dog’s nails: ua-cam.com/video/nyBkIFo0qo0/v-deo.html
Oh, and also: of course there is my basic “how to dremel” vid: ua-cam.com/video/TQegYewi1TA/v-deo.html
What grinder is on your dremmel? Thank you
Helpful video! What kind of head is on your Dremel tool? My Dremel head looks like a sandpaper wrap, but yours seems to be maybe made of metal?
