  • In this video I show how I drift the 1" round hole in my striking anvil base into a square hardy hole to accept my various hardy tools. I then weld the block to the base I made earlier to complete the anvil.
I made the base first so I had something stable and at the right height to drift the block on top of.
Thanks for watching, and have a great day!

Any idea of how long it took to drift the square hole, not county heats? Thanks for posting. Jerry

Hey Wolf, that was a good video and I look forward to building a striking anvil for my shop. I just had a question about axe forging though. When forging a bearded axe what is a good way to draw the beard down in length? I have seen people do it over the horn, but I am having a lot of trouble keeping the work piece stationed firmly enough against the horn to get a good strike without deflection. Do you have any advice on technique or different methods you’d be able to share?

How you draw down the beard depends on the material you are starting with and what method of construction you are using. If you are making a folded and forge welded axe, you want to use a top fuller or a cross pein hammer, but a top fuller with a striker is more accurate. That will get you a decently long beard.
If you want a very long beards using the same method, you need to start with a blank that already has extra material on one side so you have more to work with.
If you are starting with a block of steel, then you set one side down, punch and drift the hold, then fuller or peen out the beard.
If you are starting with square bar stock, like 1"x1x8" of bar stock, do a double set down 2/3's the way across the bar, the long end becomes your beard, your short end gets a punched and drifted hole for the handle and you can make a spike on the other end if you want, or upset that down to a fat pol, depending on what you want.
I won't have time to do one soon, but I'll see about putting together a video on the different axe construction methods.
      I hope this helps!

..Good job Doug! a question if you don't mind. Would making your drift into a broach cut the hole any easier ?? ...

Oh no, that would make it harder. I'm doing this the easiest way there is. I already drilled a 1" hole, I'm just drifting the round walls out to square now, no material removed, just pushed around into the shape I need it. Much easier.
