I hope today’s video will inspire you to organize those areas of your home that may have gotten out of control. Today, for the first time in two years, I am looking forward to working in my craft room. I feel a huge weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. I can’t wait to start crafting!

The before is the real life struggle most of us have. What I appreciate is the after is real too. It's not all matching cubicles that look streamlined out of a magazine. You did purchase some things but mostly used what you already had. Such a good feeling when a plan comes together.

I love this also! That you’ve used the things you had on hand with very few purchases! I’m blessed to have a room that I can dedicate as my craft room/office. My husband made me a FANTASTIC pegboard wall AND an actually functional ribbon rack! I’ve just not put it all together….you’ve inspired me to just get it done because I’ve wanted this room for so many years, now it’s just up to me to make it “mine!”

But now I’m motivated. I too have so many items and so many crafts and so many interests that I was beginning to think I could never get it all organized. But now I feel I can with your tips. Yes, I’m in the same situation, many supplies, many interests, and finding a workable system takes time, and often goes through many iterations, as mine did….I am finally in a good place organizationally, and mine is not a magazine hobby room either, it is a truly workable space, chock full of materials but very organized, given the space I have. Same here. It feels so good to Finally find People who also have this broad spectrum of intrest. I always felt à bit strange.
For years I needed a craft room, but never had one. My supplies are all over the house (attic, basement, livingroom, garage...) and I always told myself, with 4 little ones, it was't my time to be crafting. But I missed it somehow. Then I met this artist friends, and she took me out to Urban sketching, and it was like a waterfall how everything woke up in me again. Then my father helped me get started making a craft room out of an old workspace behind our house, that wasn't really in use. I was SOOO excited !! We have a new flooring now. We still have to do a lot. But we are finishing it with what we have on hand, or with second hand materials. It won't be a magazine picture, but it will be my creative space. So thank you guys, for being here ! Thank you for making me feel I am not the only one like this. I'm happy I found you all 💕

O…M…G… I thought you’d walked into MY craft room!! I just found your channel… and it’s come at just the right time. Covid lockdowns destroyed my bridal wear business so I decided to concentrate on my crafting. My cutting table got covered in “rescued” items that I “could do something with”, I saved all delivery boxes, my sewing machine and overlocker are crowded with “stuff” so can hardly be used! The floor is covered with toppling piles of yet more “stuff” that had “possibilities” when I retrieved them from the recycling bin - so much like yours! Now, I have 2 sewing jobs with tight deadlines & nowhere to work on sewing them!! Eeeeek! Thank you for all your ideas. I need lots of shelves put up as I don’t have ANY at present. Wish me luck! excellent tips - my fave is 'as soon as you know something is NOT working, fix it'. That's how I found your channel. Late last night I had a disaster on my work table. I had just tidied up my table and set up the next project - water in a large plastic food storage container for tea staining the next day. (Luckily I did NOT put the paint stain in the water...) THen I went in Family room and watched TV for a half hour. SOmething made me go back in the craft room to admire my clean table top before going upstairs to bed.
I found most of the water had leaked out of the closed container onto my TH glass mat, off the mat onto the table and half-way across the table. Water everywhere. Luckily I keep old towels, paper towel roll, and a paint rag under the table.
Spent the next 20 minutes mopping up water and moving all the little vintage glass dishes and bowls out of the room.
THis was the 2nd 'disaster' in this room. There is no space to turn around. I keep bumping into myself. Which made me realize -'this is NOT working. I need to fix it now!'. I need to Purge and re-organize stuff ASAP.
    tfs

I can so relate to this! I'm crafting all over the house, too. I've got tools, paint, furniture project pieces, card making supplies and paper, fabric, frames, and craft projects scattered across pretty much every available surface. We've added more lighting, streamlined my furniture hoard, and reorganized our power tools and workshop area in the basement and I'll be moving all of my 'stuff' down there. I make jewelry, sling purses and other crafts. I live in a 700 square foot rental with 2 small bedrooms, the 2nd room is currently my work space but is completely unusable. August of 2021 my husband unexpectedly passed away in his sleep at home, needless to say it has somewhat sent life into chaos for me, and during this I was needed to be a part time caretaker for my elderly mom (yes while working to support myself). This room has become a disaster. I have seen your video twice, it has inspired me to brave emptying it out, ordering some needed storage and begin making it a functional space again. I loved that you opened up your life to share your chaos too and inspired many. Thank you.

My caft/sewing room was the same! It's in our finished basement and it took me months to clean it up. I, like you, had a bit of literally everything you could think of. I had saved so much and at times had bought duplicates cause I couldn't find anything. So, I did a major purge and downsizing and threw out old glues and craft paints and donated I don't know how many car loads to a very reputable, true charity. It's much better and I knew I could never in a million years use everything I had stashed so most of everything I donated was piles and piles of craft supplies, tons of dollar store items I bought thinking I'd use someday. I even gave a whole carload of appropriate items to a teacher of special needs kids, including my original cricut machine that I got way back when that only got used once. I have a teensy fine tuning to do but labeling is essential as are clear storage containers. I actually ended up buying very little to organize cause all the bins I emptied to donate items I was able to reuse and reorganize what I was keeping. We don't really use our basement so my bins are on industrial type shelving units my husband over bought on when he did the garage. I thought it looked too busy so bought inexpensive draperies and hung them over the shelves. Side note: I prepared ahead of time and bought black garbage bags for throw away stuff and large clear bags for most all donations that weren't fragile and used cardboard boxes for more fragile stuff labeled with painters tape I already had. What a great feeling isn't it!

Wow, looks great! I would have LOVED to have got in there, and organized the whole room...what fun! LOVE labels, bins, and organized spaces.... tips: 1) bring along a garbage bag for trash 2) have a box for Giveaway or for selling 3) have a laundry basket to put things in that do not belong in the craft room (dishes, etc.) 4) set a timer (ie. spend 30 minutes a day, no more, so you don't get overwhelmed...unless you want to be in there longer)...spread it out over a reasonable amount of time 5) enlist help 6) clear bins for storing is always useful 7) use over the door shoe hangers with cubbies to store hard to store items (ie. mini iron, bottles of glue or starch 8) do one area per day (fabric one day, floral the next, wood crafts the next, etc.)

I love the "And, oh, here's some chickenwire." Yes, Ma'am, this is where I was for most of the last 2 years as well. I actually have 2 rooms I use for crafting. The sewing room is for all flowers and greenery, ribbons, and sewing supplies such as fabric, thread, buttons, etc.
My second room holds EVERYTHING else. I am so impressed with your tackling of this huge project. Good for you, Sherry. It's always a pleasure to watch your videos.

Hi Sherry, I am a Certified Professional Organizer and I would say that you nailed it! Each step you mentioned in your video was exactly what I would have told a client. In a craft room especially, function has to be paramount, so that you can create the "form". Also, you can create beauty with the craft supplies themselves. I organized a craft room for a client and hung her quilting rulers and embroidery hoops on a pegboard and created an art collage that was functional.

I’m donating anything I haven’t used in over 1 yr and throwing away things that are obsolete. It’s not easy but I want to feel I can breathe again! Thanks for all your info. I hope my room will look as good as yours.

Thank you for showing the true before and after videos! I'm not fortunate to have a special separate room for my sewing and crafting. My machine, table, chair, and extra fabric is all stored in my bedroom . I have a small space in a storage closet where I keep my other craft supplies.
I love the clear storage bin concept. That would help me see what I have, as I am like you, I find things I have forgotten about sometimes for years!
Thank you again for keeping it honest and for the inspiration.

I relate to the need to focus on function before beauty. I moved to a small apartment and finally had my scrapbook room both functional and pretty -- until I want back to teaching and had to also use the room for teaching supplies that had been stored in tubs. My room was a disaster. I finally gave in and bought larger shelves, using more vertical space. I don't have it completely redone, but it has enabled me to clear the floor. I'm still working on it.

Thank you! I feel like I am drowning in my craft room to be honest and we created it for me to have a good work area that was not the kitchen counters or dining room table, etc…. Sooo! I am right back to using those places to craft and it’s awful. I have a concentration problem to begin with but my messy areas are making it so much worse. Yes…this from the woman who used to be diligently organized. I feel hope from actually seeing your hot mess 😉. Thank you for all of your great ideas! Feeling hopeful and inspired. Thank you so much for sharing! Your craft room looks amazing and functional! I recently finished a 10 day garage emptying/cleaning/painting/reorganizing project that followed a lot of similar organization principles. (I also watched several videos for inspiration) If you are like me, you are getting a renewed sense of accomplishment every time you step into your craft room. It doesn't take much for me, though. Every time I clean out my pantry I open the door randomly for a few days just to admire it!

You DEFINITELY inspired me! I don't have a craft "room" but just a space in my garage that has bled into a dining room space, bedroom space, hall space...I've been taken over. Most importantly, tho', I'd be humiliated to tell anyone the number of "dupes" I've found as I organized. I have more pipecleaners than a young person could use in a lifetime - much less someone my age!! How many containers of school glue can one person use? Due to the chaos, everytime I needed something I'd rush out to buy it - either not knowing where it was or forgetting I had some (or 20!!). I have more stuff than Dollar Tree. Unknowingly, I think you've increased my annual income. LOL

What I love most is when you said...."I have to see my stuff. Out of sight out of mind."...this is my biggest problem!!!! Not seeing my craft supplies actually gives me anxiety in the craft room. I need to be able to look around and see if something sparks a creative idea with what I am currently working on. I also loved when you said, "Make it functional before beautiful." Yes! I don't care if it is matchy-machy....after I figure out how to store it functionally, I can always go back and take the functional piece and slap some cohesive colored paint onto it and call it good. Thank you for this insight, for validating my feelings about my stuff, and for showing me, there is away to get it all organized!!! Thank you!!!
