First mate Bob (Paul Myers), is my great grandfather. I was named after his son, my paternal grandfather, Richard Myers. Thank you SO MUCH for posting this video! You have no idea how grateful I am.
Thank you for posting this wonderful video. I got saved in 1985 at which time I worked the night shift at a General Motors plant. My lunch break was at 2:am. I would go to my car in the parking lot and eat my sandwich every night with my radio tuned to the Haven of Rest program with Ray Ortland. What a blessing that broadcast was to me. May God bless the Haven Ministry.Thank you for the role you played in the early years of my walk with The Lord !
I use to listen to this radio program after I accepted Jesus at the age of 10 in 1970. Hearing the "eight bells & all's well; you have entered into the Haven of Rest" & "Welcome Aboard the Goodship Grace" brings back some sweet memories of a little girl learning about Jesus via radio. Thank you for posting this!!
Charlie Turner was my dad. Still good friends with the Bowman family. Just shared this video with some of the Bowman family. Thank you for posting this.

My mother, throughout the 1940s & later, always listened to First Mate Bob. She regularly mailed the little envelope to the program and received their newsletter. Even as a youngster, I always looked forward to the weekly "Ahoy there," as the show always began. I didn't realize that the program was produced in Hollywood. Great memories. Evan Long, Visalia, CA
+Evan Long Thanks for sharing, Evan. FYI - The "good ship" is still standing on Hyperion in Hollywood. Sadly, Haven moved from their in the late 90's, but we are still a Southern Californian production. Last year our local paper ran a fun story on our 80 year history. Thanks so much for sharing this treasure of history with those who grew up with First Mate Bob and the Haven of Rest quartet. Listener in the '50's here on KGDN in Seattle. Now living in NE Thailand as a "tentmaker." This, and the treasure trove of quartet songs now on UA-cam provide me with so much inspiration and encouragement.
Thanks for leaving this friendly note! It's a real blessing to know that the Lord has used Haven for so many years to point people to Jesus. Godspeed as you serve Him in Thailand. You should be able to stream our daily program by visiting www.haventoday.org.
Thank you for producing this very heart warming memory of when I was a young boy my mother always listened also and I also being from a very musical family enjoyed the music along with the messages from First Mate Bob.When I once again heard this segment I recently heard Ray Boltz sing THANK YOU and First Mate Bob and the crew will probably have those in heaven thanking them along with thousands of others!
Charlie Turner was my Dad! What a precious gift you gave me with this video and history of Haven of Rest when my Dad was part of the quartet. Patty Turner Geer.
I’m the middle child of Charlie Turner. I remember visiting the studio many times. Even got to sing on the radio once with my dad. Precious memories. The Bowman family are good friends to this day.
I miss The Haven of Rest (and The Morning Chapel Hour.) Such a shame that we feel the need to change to accommodate the world. Adopt short, snappy titles. I just don't remember reading that the early Christians became more like the Romans in terms of music, presentation, etc... to "grow the church."
@@camarosunrise5128 all too true...if a spiritual enterprise begins to lose revenue, the natural reaction is to how to appeal to the listeners; not how to glorify God.
might want to remember that the Wurlitzer sound that Lorin Whitney was so fond of using...and the Hammond M3/B3 sounds...with the leslie speaker...those sounds were not well received by the church at the time he started using them. From what I've read he liked using those instruments to reach the new generation....alas, becoming like the Romans. we don't change to become 'like' others but because change is a constant. All things (not God) change as we have been given gifts of creativity. Would you rather nothing ever be invented so that we might not be like others in the human race...as a whole a creation of God. If you're not going to use your 'talents' you might give them to someone who will, rather than bury them in the ground.

My uncle who turns 90 this month loved to listen to the Haven of Rest radio program and the Quartet singing through the years. Does anyone know if this Early Film Footage video of the Haven of Rest can be purchased? I would love for him to see this but he does not have a computer and internet. It would make his birthday perfect to see it. Thank you for any information. Myrna Rudolph
Hey Myrna, We don't have this available for mass purchase. But if you send your request to ministry@haventoday.org with your contact information, we'd love to send you the full DVD taken from Haven's 50th anniversary. We just ask for a small gift to the ministry to help cover shipping and production. Haven Team
I used to listen t this program when I was a teen and young adult, I was saved at the time, but even though I was still unsaved, and listening to rock and roll music, and out with my friends, and not living godly still I was strangely drawn to this program I would at times force myself to listen, even when i thought it was rather boring and dry, but somehow I still liked it. they were one of the ways seeds were sown in my life, then in 1985 I went to a Bible study at the Alliance Church in my community and accepted the Lord. God used different people and situations to bring to finally to Him, so I have a great blessing listening to this program is there still a Haven of Rest program on in some form or other?
That was a good info about them, are all the songs performed from the album i have called shipmates of song? It sounds distorted and a little unintelligable.
Ah..but simpler times...times with its sorrows and difficulties, but men and women were blessed with hard work (without updated technology), discipline, and faith to accomplish monumental tasks. As a result they received Heaven's blessing. Today's generation also has its issues and frustrations. But this "microwave age" expects things NOW, with minimum effort, if any. Unlike the days of old (for Blacks as well as Whites), people learned to master hardships. True worship was more sincere, without fanfare; and people knew how to make due with what they had; not feeling society owed them anything. Oh...for the days gone by!!!!@
