This is such a wonderful recording of a true twentieth century masterpiece. I saw Isaac Stern play with the San Francisco Symphony several times and enjoyed his warm, appreciative, and very fine playing. It's great that he worked so well with Ormandy in this January 1963 recording. It is a work of great contrasts and has considerable feeling and emotion.
This is, along with the Sibelius, Beethoven, and Korngold, my favorite violin concerto, and this sublime performance of it is one of my 'desert island' discs.
thank you for listening!
Bartok 2 is another incredible concerto and the recording with Bernstein - Stern is amazing. Also I love beethoven's one as much as Brhams's concerto,
It's my favorite as well. Have you heard Igor Oistrakh's performance with Gennady Rozhdestvensky?
Great performance!!! Had this recording on cassette about 30 years ago. However, am wondering why you put the second mov last?
apparently Copeland attended the premiere of this piece at the Paris Opera House in Oct 1923... the concerto had the unfortunate task of following the premiere of Stravinsky’s Octet, which polarized the audience, dominated headlines around the world, and led Copeland to speak out in its defense... I’m convinced the audience must’ve left the building immediately thereafter because there’s almost no record of anyone reviewing prokofiev’s work that night - ain’t that a kick ? tell me you don’t hear the world bursting into flames right around 16:20
