Thanks so much, KND! This is exactly what I was looking for and I counldn't find this simplified and successful method anywhere. You saved my sanity and my time. 💛
Great. This helped me a lot. Now at least I have an idea of how I should try to combat my clients project. For future reference, try not to mention what NOT to do, or how you used to do stuff. Just talk about how you should do stuff. It can easily become confusing otherwise, especially if the topic is new for the viewer, as this was for me. The ”I used to...” segments didn't help me at all since I had no experience of it before, so those examples really didn't add to anything. But now I will have a go and see if I can make sense of all this. :)
Unfortunately, I don’t have a video demonstrating levels. The helpx.adobe.com page on this is pretty good. However, having done an index ahead of incorporating levels, you may find your own added efficiencies to their process.
If I remember correctly (without a document to reference), simply deleting the topic list leaves previously-set markers behind. A find-and-change of the marker symbol and deleting them may be the only way to remedy that. I don’t think I noted it in the video that it’s ideal to retain a “pre-indexed” copy of your document for this very reason. So that if you need to remove the topic list, you can just make a copy of your “just in case I screw up” document.
Apologies form the late response: the key command upon selecting those topics creates a topic list in the Index window - I don’t currently have a document to reference or indesign on this device; however, if that command doesn’t work (be sure topics are all highlighted first), you may be able to use the flyout menu of the index window to create the topic list from this highlighted words.

thanks for the tips

That's very helpful feedback! Thanks!
Do you have a video for levels?

If you mess up, how do you delete your whole index of topics within your main document to start over?

COMMAND/CONTROL + OPTION/ALT + [ didn't work for me (either way with shift). What's that shortcut for? Thanks!!!
