  • Toronto has unveiled a new four-year construction plan for the Gardiner Expressway, which will mean lane reductions in both directions on a very busy stretch of the highway. CBC’s Greg Ross has the latest details on how this will impact Torontonians.

Friendly reminder that Metrolinx is massively increasing services on the Lakeshore West and Kitchener GO lines in April which are perfectly situated to pick up the slack. All day 15 minute service and trips that are reliably faster than driving, plus you can drive to the station and park if you hate the bus. Considering the timing of this it wouldn't surprise me if Metrolinx planned these service increases deliberately because they knew the construction would be bad. Shame that the CBC didn't bother mentioning these alternatives in this report honestly.

Thank god this is no longer my route.
Why did they wait until it was literally falling apart to do serious maintenance work? I still can’t believe they got rid of that exit just before it splits off to the Don Valley. Horrible city planning.

Why don't they run these project 24/7 to get them done in a fraction of the time. I'm certain the cost benefit analysis would ink out very favourably, cost to speed up the project vs societal savings to have it speed up.

because the highway passes through some of the densest neighborhoods in the country and because there is a perfectly viable alternative in the Lakeshore West, Milton and Kitchener GO lines, two of which are seeing massive service increases next month and the third (milton) is in the planning stages for dedicated tracks. The city and province already get crazy complaints from underground construction on Subway lines, 24/7 work above ground in downtown would raise hell.

Gardner is a nightmare. The construction will never end. It's already 4 yrs while the Gardner under construction. The Lakeshore overloaded with non-stop traffic.
The pavement is not look like surface. The roads are entire pot holes.
There is no hope for the improvements from the Olivia Chow.
The whole City in the state of CONSTRUCTION. Non of the started projects are completed.
The 90% of money will be spent on the housing...

Very easy fix during the construction. Take the bike lanes and finish all construction on Adelaide and Richmond Street. Make the duration of Traffic lights longer like minutes or two . People will leave the city so fast . Also finish construction remove bike lanes on Bathurst Street and younge Street . You won't even notice the construction.

    • @UzumakiNaruto_

My solution is to tear down the existing Gardiner and build a brand new one. Not just one deck, but THREE DECKS HIGH. The first deck would perform the same function as now and allow people to drive downtown and get off on various downtown streets as needed. The second deck would be a true expressway where there's NO ACCESS to downtown and is meant for people who want to drive east-west crosstown and aren't looking to access downtown. Now people who simply want to use the Gardiner to go through downtown can do so quickly.
The third deck could be a pedestrian park similar to New York's Highline Park so that people can have access to a park several stories up and enjoy the views of Toronto while getting some exercise. This third deck could be optional and if you want to save money then cut it, but I think it'd be cool to have such a park in the heart of the city so that both locals and tourists can go and enjoy it.

My prediction: if they say the project will be finished in 2027 that means at least 2030..., if they say the price of the project is $300 mln it is easy to guarantee they will have to end up with at least a $1 bln... The funniest thing is they start the project and yet to decide where the money comes from. But if it was possible to hire a Chinese company with Chinese labor, the project would be finished... overnight. 😊

I'd move closer to my new work if I could but I will be immediately priced out of the city and I'm a field engineer with a masters degree and 20 years experience. One lane makes a huge difference. So many god damned trucks from the cherry st construction of a damn bike bridge it takes me 25 minutes just to get on to the gardiner. If I could I would but basically this city is telling me it is not worth my time... car thefts that aren't addressed, shootings that aren't addressed, insane driving (and that includes the cyclists) that is not addressed, housing situation that is not addressed, transit situation that is not addressed, and the list goes on and on and on and on. Give me a way to have some options here and I will take them, but there are none.
