    Keep going. Those who put a thumbs down either have a bloated ego or are just jealous because of the help that you do for us DIYers. You(with Schrodinger's Box, realfixesrealfast and Scotty Kilmer) are one of those I actually follow because you breakdown the cause & effect of why cars breakdown and provide instructions. We truly appreciate what you're doing because you made us understand electrical concepts on the classroom level.

    okay, I don't mind the thumbs down, but when it is this early in a video release it has to be from one of my faithful subscribers. please tell me what you didn't like, even if it is a private message, I'm okay with that.
    I realize it may be because I plugged that electrical probe so much, but realize it was from the heart AND if I can support a fellow technician that has a great product, I'm going to do so. I would do the same for any one of you!

      It's frustrating seeing the thumbs down from my end too. It must be even more frustrating for you. You're always going to get egotistical people who think they're better, and that their methods are superior, or that they'd do it differently. But that's not to say whomever clicked the thumbs down hasn't a genuine reason for doing so. I only wish they'd share why so we can all learn from their wisdom.
      Keep it up Paul, it's all good! 👍

    so, you used the test light to limit the current to say 315mA (just enough to load that ground, compared to a LED test light of 20mA) and the PP as a voltage source & switch. If you connect the PP to the driver, the only limit to current flow is its circuit breaker (8A thermal) that will be above the rating for the switching transistor in the ECM driver. Thank you for the video, great teaching skills and explanations.

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  7 років тому +2

      I think I'm understanding your statement. But to be clear, NEVER hit the switch on the PP when you are testing a driver in a computer!

      Sure, you will apply 12v capable to deliver 8 amps to a driver circuit that may only go up to 1-1.5 amp forward. Time to get that magic can of smoke that we all love so much...

    Might get one of Phil's probes myself! It looks like it is a well thought out tool! Paul the Power Probe is nice but used in conjunction with your famous test light made a simple test look complicated. ( Tip ) I made a test light with a 25 foot cord on it ( stranded,12 ga, low voltage outdoor lighting wire, Home Depot ) and it eliminates the need to find a decent power or ground, since I am always hooked at the battery to B+ or B - . Great vid, keep them coming! You still the man Dude ! LOL !

I want one of those long probes as well... probably look into it tomorrow.

    Although it prob wouldn't have worked easily on this setup, I was shown a nifty trick for checking those vent solenoid circuits out (the two wire ones): take a 921 bulb and at the bottom the two wires can be bent out from the glass base and they are the perfect size and distance apart to plug directly into the vent valve connector. Unplug the connector from the vent valve, stick your handy dandy circuit tester bulb into the connector, and then toggle the valve with your scan tool. Bulb lights up- you have a good circuit and driver. Plug the connector back on the vent valve and toggle the solenoid once again with the scanner: if you hear it click, it's good. If you don't, it's more than likely bad. It's a quick 30 second way to check your circuit for power and ground (or power and control), turn the valve on with the scanner and if the bulb lights, your circuit is good. If it doesn't then you can break out the meters, power probes, and extension wiring and find out why it's not working. I have also used this method to check power and control / ground for the two wire purge solenoid circuits as well, it's a real quick and easy way of verifying your circuits to rule out the computer and wiring to the solenoid and all you have to grab is your "circuit checking 921 bulb". I keep several handy in my electrical drawer of my box and it's a huge time saver when diagnosing those pain in the butt EVAP codes. Thanks for the tool review, I need to get a couple of those "Phil's" as well!

    Hi Paul I find your tutorials are excellent but just one question ,when you were checking for power with the powerprobe could it fool you because you are not putting a load on that wire ,you could just have 2 strands of wire left and you would still see 12v and a red led.

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  8 років тому

      +Vince o brien yes and the same goes for the voltmeter. In this case I could not load the circuit because the solenoid coil was open.
      So think about it, I never truly loaded the feed wire and there still could be a problem there. But what are the chances that the solenoid is open (which it definitely is) AND the feed wire has a resistance problem at the same time?! Almost a 0% chance of that. If you are concerned about this in the future, the incandescent test light will be your friend. It will load the circuit for you.

    • @MrJAa85
      @MrJAa85 6 років тому

      Well, TJM Networks is not wrong. The test light does put a load on the circuit, which as a RESULT reduces current flow, as opposed to putting 12 V directly into the driver-controlled circuit with no resistance which would result in no load = no resistance= high amps = fried PCM :p Or did I miss something? :)

  • @trainer2018
    @trainer2018 8 років тому

    Hey Paul, I don't own a Power Probe 4 yet but I am planning on buying one. I have a question about your test of the ground driver of that solenoid. To do a accurate test of the Driver don't you have to have the tool in Driver Test Mode? I saw on the screen that you are on normal Voltmeter mode. I don't own one yet but I thought I would ask. Plus if the tool doesn't load the driver in the Voltmeter mode then that test you did is a inaccurate test. Thanks.

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  8 років тому +1

      +busjockey1 driver test mode (which I didn't know about before I shot the video) is a mode that applies around 12 or 13 ma of current to the driver. Basically the tool is measuring the current flow through the LED circuit.
      Technically speaking, as long as you see the voltage drop, this suggests the driver is functional. I've NEVER seen a driver pass that test and fail some sort of loaded test. If you think about it 13 ma is not really a load either, especially when the solenoid draws about 350ma.
      Remember every circuit is different and we cannot know what normal current flow is in all situations, so "loading" the driver is not something I'm really wanting to do. Make sense?

    • @trainer2018
      @trainer2018 8 років тому

      That vent solenoid will only close during the EVAP leak test and there are many parameters that need to be met for that to happen.

    great videos. im I diy guy, im fighting a po446 on my 01gmc 1500, not other codes, I bought and swapped out the vent valve, valve on intake and new charcoal canister and new gas cap, worked few weeks and light came back on, I turn cel off with scanner and come back on next day, I have checked both new and old parts with power probe, it clicks on and off and other intake valve holds vacuum . I read in a forum that the fuel tank pressure switch could be the problem, I have tried swapping just one item at a time and no luck. the o rings on tube from canister to vent valve seem to have a good fit but the plastic lock connectors have broken, looking into making or buy a smoke machine any advice would help. keep up the great videos. travis

      +Travis S okay cool, that's what I thought. Two main causes 1. open vent control solenoid 2. wiring to the solenoid is corroded.
      Since you already replaced the solenoid, tug on the wires near the connector, they will break if the wiring was corroded internally. The insulation can look fine from the outside. Don't be afraid to tug on it pretty hard.

    I like the idea of the video but it is a VERY round about way of testing the vent solenoid. In my experience I've gotten rid of a test light because all it tells you is that the circuit is "complete." it doesn't tell you what the actual voltages are which is a crucial note on today's computer controlled cars. I like that you're using the PPIV. the PP3 would work just as well in this instance. remember people time is money when it comes to auto repair.

    Paul, Thanks so much for the endorsement of the PP4. You may not know, but the PP4 can test the ground controlled driver by using its "Driver Test Mode". It was designed to make fast work of the problem you are showing. During this test the Power Switch is disabled so there is no danger of accidental activation.
    If you go to www.powerprobe.com and then VIDEOS and then "How to use the Driver's Test Mode" you can see how.

So in this mode, other than it disabling the switch (great idea btw) what is the difference with the green and red leds? Does the PP4 add more of a current during the test? 2. What about a high side driver setting (power side switched driver), is there a setting to tell the PP4 what type of driver?

      No disrespect, but any tool that encourages wire piercing IS going to fall in the hands of technicians that will not repair the pierce. Especially a piercing tool designed for hard to reach wires. This is an undeniable fact and we all have seen it. Unfortunately the automotive flat rate pay system causes technicians to take short cuts instead of lowering or removing components in there way of access.

    • @ScannerDanner

      "Unfortunately the automotive flat rate pay system causes technicians to take short cuts instead of lowering or removing components in there way of access."
      These methods I use have nothing to do with the flat rate system and everything to do with accuracy. You say we should lower or remove components to test them?
      Try unbolting some of these components (in the rust belt of PA) under the car and you snap every single bolt. And what if the component you are trying to access isn't even the problem?
      Talk about wasting the customers money.
      Then of course there are the intermittent issues and you need to prove the fault. What happens to a sticking solenoid after the vibration of you unbolting it from where it lives? It unsticks! And you CANNOT prove the fault anymore! See what I mean.

      There are variables to this too. An open coil like we had can actually read a bias voltage of 5-12v depending in system designs in the computer.
