The Importance of Secondary Storage

  • Data is the single most important thing in the data center. By far. That's why it's called a data center. Not a server center. Not a network center. Not even storage center. But data center. Data is not only the most important thing in the data center but it's quickly becoming the most important business asset of many companies.
Being able to store and access the data at all times is focal. Primary storage is taking care of that. But equally important is doing everything in your power to not lose the data. That's when secondary storage steps in!
Not to forget, secondary storage can be used these days for much more than just backups. Many businesses are already today refining the massive amount of secondary data they have been collecting over the decades into valuable business insight.
In this video, I will go through different secondary storage options from small businesses to large scale global environments, using HPE portfolio as an example.

Our old setup was an MSA (primary) to StoreOnce setup. But after a DR event and failure, we're going to a dHCI setup with the Nimble array and shooting to both an offsite "Hot-site" and a StoreOnce.

BTW, Markus, these are FANTASTIC videos.

Thanks for sharing, neosuki! Sorry to hear. What went wrong with MSA+StoreOnce? So, you'll have dHCI on primary site and you will be backing up to DR site where you have StoreOnce, did I get that right?

@@TechEnthusiastInc The DR event was unexpected water intrusion that also damaged infrastructure, along with the realization that Hardware acquisition will have to be factored into our new DR plans. Amazingly, even with the water intrusion into the MSA, all data was recovered. Our new setup will be Primary site A replicating to Secondary site B (Hotsite) with an additional offload to StoreOnce at Site C.

Oh, so you didn't lose any data in the end. Phew, good! Your new plan with 3 sites sounds really good, that's the way to do it! 👍

Good quality stuff. This is ALOT of information for 1 video! I've seen your other videos about HPE Simplivity, but could you specify more of the details in a longer video perhaps? Besides all the HPE stuff, did you ever take a closer look at other vendors like Cisco Hyperflex HCI for example?

Hi Maj! My deepest apologies, I must have missed your comment months ago. :( You mean more details about Simplivity in a longer video? Certainly would be fun, I love Simplivity and hopefully I will have time for that kind of a video at some point but at the moment near future seems quite packed with other videos.
Certainly, I do keep an eye on everything that's happening in the industry and I am somewhat familiar with Cisco HyperFlex too but more familiar with VSAN solutions, VxRail and Nutanix (in addition to Simplivity and HPE Nimble Storage dHCI, of course).
